'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' is probably my favorite storytelling song by Maiden, but 'The Trooper' is awesome too!

I have to agree with your comment. Maiden has alot of good music. Rime of the ancient mariner is actually a poem written by Samuel Colritch. Probably got the name wrong but it's close to it and been awhile since I've read it

With all that was going on at the time and the rolling over by Neville Chamberlain, when Churchill made this speech, it was said that Hitler looked at Goering and said something to effect of a great fight was coming. He was right about that.

Great Britain, not just England… 🤦♂️
Hard to believe this song is now about the same distance from us now as it is from the Battle of Britain, ages me considerably
"Moonchild" is another absolute banger...to me it's their best album opener (TO ME!!!)
This is one of my top favorites of this band, musically, lyrically, all of it. If I was a British citizen I'd lobby to make this the unofficial song of the Isles, I swear. How could you not feel a swelling of national pride in what the R.A.F. had to do back then for the defense of the country? Amazing metal homage to those veterans.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner is my absolute favorite from them. It is long but amazing.
This song commemorates the Battle of Britain, which was do or die (succeed or fail), to save the UK from invasion by Nazi Germany. Incredible heroism was common over the course of the campaign, which happened before the US entered the war, and England was alone in the fight. Radar was invented during period and helped to anticipate where to send their limited resources of air power to intercept the enemy bombers. Dave Murray shreds his lead and he’s always been my favorite guitarist. Great reaction! Up The Irons!
The biggest story-telling song from IM by far is Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Great song w/ many parts/sections. Definitely a must listen. Another good one and my fav outside of Hallowed Be Thy Name is The Number of the Beast. More great guitar work in these 3.
Whenever I'm feeling down or having a bad day, this song ALWAYS pumps me up! It's like being hit with lightening.
Powerslave was a truly huge album for Iron Maiden. The tour was legendary :) A great listening, as always :)

The speech at the beginning is the great Sir Winston Churchill speaking during the war inspiring a nation. The solos are epic in this song, after a while you can hear who is playing which solo without seeing it, Dave Murray ( first solo ) has always been my guitar hero! Steve Harris is the G.O.A.T on the bass, his style and skill is unmatched!! You should check out 'Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter' & 'The Evil That Men Do'

Evidently there are 2 version of BYODTTS, one being from one of Bruce's solo recordings after (or shortly after) he left Maiden (I think??). I honestly cannot decide which version is better? They are very similar, not a lot of variation, but still distinct enough to stand on their own. And if Lily is gonna do any 7th Son tracks, she may as well dive in for a full album reaction and follow the story. 😀

@@BlackieNuff Bruce did BYDTTS for the soundtrack to to Nightmare on Elm Street the Dream Child while still in Maiden. He was going to release on Tattooed Millionaire but Steve heard it and liked it so it became a Maiden song. Janick also played on the original version.

Churchills speech in the beginning was his attempt to fire up the nation as the invasion of France began. France surrendered within 2 months and Britain stood alone against the 3rd Reich in Europe. That speech is very metal 🤘
A good song that’s has a good story line is “rime of the ancient mariner” You gotta definitely do the live version though because it is phenomenal. You’ll see
Your Maiden reactions are just a bundle of joy! Amazing band!
As you get more into listening to iron maiden you will find this is a band that is the best story telling history telling band ever with over 4 decades of material and are still going strong today

That’s the BEAUTY of this Band … great STORY Telling… Historical references …. MELODICALLY sound…. Riffs…. OPERATIC VOCALS..
2 guitar solos If you listen to live albums like Live After Death, Dave Murray's guitar is on the left and Adrian Smith's guitar is on the right. Aces High is also on that album.
I was there for night 2 of 4 in Long Beach, CA for the recording of Live After Death during their Powerslave Tour. Such an amazing experience and I've seen them 7 times since then.

One of the songs that rocked my world back in the 80's man. Maiden is amazing. I was lucky to see them just 3-4 years ago in Cincy. They STILL put on an epic show even though they are getting on in age.

One of the best concerts you could ever go to back in the 80's or even today! Their shows are absolutely amazing they put 110% into every show I've ever seen.
This song was written about what RAF fighter pilots had to do to defend Britain in the Battle of Britain during WWII. Many of Iron Maiden;s songs are about history.
clean melodic solo. stranger in a strange land official video (studio sound + live footage) has one of the most beautiful maiden solos for me
Alexander the Great is one of the Iron Maiden's epic songs, great story, great solos, full of musical interludes, masterpiece.
Four decades later, it never gets old.
as far as telling a story, quest for fire sticks out in my head, because i was always watching that movie as a kid, and its amusing to hear iron maiden tell about it
You've already done a few of their best Maiden story songs. Next would be either "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (based on the epic poem) or "Alexander the Great" (based off of history). Rime is an epic 13 minute song with a lot of transitions and creative compositions.
Be Quick or Be Dead is the fastest and heaviest Iron Maiden song for sure.
Iron Maiden have had 3 guitarists since 1999. They originally had 2 guitarists, Dave Murray and Adrian Smith, when this album came out. Adrian left the band in 1990 and was replaced by Janick Gers. Then in 1993, the lead singer, Bruce Dickinson left the band, and he did a couple of solo albums with Adrian on guitar, which are really good. Then in 1999, both Bruce and Adrian rejoined the band and Adrian's replacement, Janick, stayed on, making them a 3 guitar band. Another great thrashing song from them is The Wicker Man, which is the first single they released after becoming a 3 guitar band.
It's funny how you mentioned "three way guitar solos", In 1999 Iron Maiden got a third guitarist. In 1990 Adrian Smith left the band and was replaced by Janick Gers, and then in 1999 he rejoins the band as the third guitarist, which adds more depth in the rhythm

I've always thought Gers never fit in with their style, but I get it - he's their mate.
Back on 1990 when I first graduated from high school this was the first song on the first CD I listened to in my first self-bought car. 30+ years and 10 or so more cars since it is now a tradition.
And Never Surrender!!!! ✊
I love how we can read what you are thinking by your facial expressions! LOL
My favorite Iron Maiden song that tells a story would be: Personally...."The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" as a ldr myself, it explains the trials you go through on race days where you just don't have it...days where it requires more mental toughness than usual. But overall...I would say.... a strong favorite track of theirs that tells a story is "STILL LIFE", I can only imagine your facial expression when you hear the lyrics of particular lines in this track and you begin to connect the dots to what the song is about. It will freak you out to a degree!

In 1984 one evening when I was 9 years old. MTV did the World Premier Video at 7pm and this was the song that played. From that moment on I became obsessed with Iron Maiden and to this day they are my favorite band of all time. They are also one of my biggest musical influences Go see them live in 2024 \m/ They are playing songs from their Somewhere in Time and Senjutsu albums as well some other classics.
You should hear the Live After Death version too Lilly Jane

you should really listen to "Phantom of the Opera"! It's a thrash song! The production isn't great but after nearly 40 years of being a Maiden fan, this is still my favorite song from them. It's off their first album and When I listen to it now I hear how they influenced the song structures in later thrash metal classics just from this one song. I'm sure you'll hear it too. PS Clive Burrs' drumming and Steve Harris's bass playing are relentless in this song!
This really should have included the Churchill's Speech excerpt to open the track... Luckily I found a flawless clip online and now I have it to open my Powerslave album! 😀
This is my favorite Maiden song. before my vocal surgeries I actually would sing this with one of my bands live it was wild. Yeah, that was a triple harmony solo, having two, three, or four guitars playing together is the Iron Maiden signature and influenced SO MUCH. the entire metal population of Sweden owe their devil horns to these guys. Awesome to see I have a slightly bluer version of that shirt. i love it. salud 🍺
Interesting fact: Bruise wanted to join the RAF but now he ended up as a commercial piolet. With that experience he is the pilot of Ed Force One.
Currently Iron Maiden has 3 guitar players in their lineup, each with a playing style of their own that after a while you can totally distinguish in their records and live performances. For a story telling song from them, to me the best is “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, with “Paschendale” as a bonus track falling into the same category.
'Where Eagles dare' by Iron Maiden is one of their best 'storytelling' songs. Historical lyrics... I'd say 'Empire of the Clouds' (It is 18 minutes, though...) or 'Alexander the Great'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
What I always love when I listen to this song is that the riff sounds like a siren 🚨 whenever he says “There goes the siren…”

When I saw Iron Maiden in 2019 (my first concert) they opened with this song. (I was 20 years old then).
39 years ago (when i was 10/11 years old) i got my first plate/ebleme stitched on the back of mine jeans jacket..number of the beast😂 and my best friend had peace of mind on his jacket🤣...
So the first solo was Dave Murray. His style is sounds very smooth (legato) with fast scale type patterns in there. Th second one, Adrian Smith, his solos typically don't have the sort of fast paced scales like Dave's, but his are almost designed by Adrian before he plays them as though each note is deliberate where as Dave's have a bit more of an improvised feel about them. The bassist, Steve Harris, is the driving force if the band and you can hear a galloping to his playing that seems to carry the rest of the band. All amazing musicians with their own amazing style
Love how first timers jump at the beginning 🤘🎶🇬🇧🇦🇺👍 the Trooper hits hard, but you've already done that one.
Infinite dreams or revelations for a more melodic feel! My 2 favorite songs.
Nice to see someone young appreciating Maiden. In the late 80's their music got me interested in a variety of historical subjects. I'm a better person because of it.
ANTHRAX needs some love too Lilly! "I AM THE LAW"
Lilly Actually, current lineup since this video has 3 guitarists (Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers) sharing leads with Steve Harris on Bass and Nicko McBrain on drums.
Maiden are true professionals they've been constantly doing it for decades now
Another Great reaction, to another great Iron Maiden song. I really enjoy seeing your reaction, to music from my youth. Want another great one. Trooper, is my favorite IM Song.
There’s a a bunch of fire Maiden songs that aren’t just about history each album usually has a differnt vibe
Lord of light, The longest day, The clansman, The reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, Paschendale, Fortunes of war...... And so much more! The sheriff of Huddersfield 😁
Oooohh, NEW Iron Maiden's "The Writing's on the Wall" cuts really deep-Pay attention, folks..🤨❤👍🏻
Aces High was my first metal shirt as a high schooler!
Saw them on this tour 1984 in Chicago
Fun fact. Bruce Dickenson is actually a talented pilot and flys the bands giant private jet himself often to various venues.
For the 56 year old headbanger, the Mount Rushmore of Metal is Maiden, Priest, Sabbath and Motorhead.
Iron Maiden is heavy metal, not thrash metal so you're not going to get that "chug" that you get from thrash. Never the less, you should check out 2 Minutes to Midnight, Powerslave, Moonchild, Paschendale, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and Phantom of the Opera for songs with great lyrics.
Used Aces High to teach Battle of Britain in history class. It puts you there.
We shall never surrender! Chills
I love the speech that Churchill gave.
Bruce Dickinson is an actual licensed pilot and did a dog fight in a plane over a show a few years back.
Favorite Iron Maiden song is Infinite Dreams off of the Seventh Son album. Not only are the lyrics about self discovery within one's dreams but the arrangement doesn't allow for resolution. It rises to epic crescendo and yet, just like in real life, you can feel the character still at odds with who he is. Most Maiden tracks finish with resolution. This one does not. Really just a fascinating and mesmerizing piece of music.
Got to love Iron Maiden, for me it´s honestly quite hard to find any of their songs that I don´t like, but they are also probably the first band I started to like when it comes to music at all..
One song that really captures my imagination, having lived on the Kent coast for many years, at present Dover before then Folkestone.
The parchment from the album senjutsu it's a masterpiece
Iron maiden is a sing along band that cheers you up.
Hooe you carry on listing to them and grow to love them 🥰🥰🥰
Specifically, this is about the Battle Over Britain and the Blitz of London which took place July-Oct. 1 1940. Strictly a battle in the air over England during WW2.
Nice reaction 👍🤟
Great, great song, love it!
Iron Maiden isn't thrash metal. They are Heavy Metal. There songs and albums tell stories like a book with chapters there books/albums have songs. They are at the top of the Heavy Metal mountain.
Talking about the story and structure of Iron Maiden, in a part of the history they were 2 guitarrist, Adrian leaves and also bruce, and after 2 disks both came and now they are 3 guitars!!!! and a bass. The "dark ages" of Maiden were without Bruce.
Rime of the Ancient Mariner, 13 and a half minutes, but it is a great song based on a poem of the same name from 1798 by Samuel Taylor Coleridge .
"Somewhere in time" album is a great story!
#1. Flight Of Icarus 2. Sign Of The Cross 3. To Tame A Land 4. The Prisoner ("I am not a number!) 5. Childhood's End 6. The Clansman(studio version) 7. The Nomad 8. Flash Of The Blade 9. Alexander The Great 10. Moonchild
Best Maiden songs w/storytelling: The Talisman, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Hallowed Be They Name, Aces High, Senjutsu, The Trooper, Longest Day, Paschendale, Book of Souls, Dance of Death, Brighter Than a Thousand Suns, When the Wild Wind Blows, Alexander the Great, Death or Glory, The Clansman, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Seventh Son of Seventh Son, Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Parchment, The Red and the Black, the list goes on and on.
"Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is a story. Or check out any song from live concert Rock In Rio 2001. "Sign Of the Cross" for example. Some marvelous guitar solos.
Iron Maiden are my no1 band and Aces High is one of my top Maiden songs 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🤘🤘🤘
OH! That FIRST PAUSE - PERFECT TIMING!!
My favorite storytelling Maiden songs are Rime of the ancient mariner, Alexander the Great, Paschendale, when the wild wind blows, dance of death and the entire 7th son album, which is a conceptual art about the 7th son tale.
2 minutes to midnight and aces high are my favorites
