First time in Seremban - Negeri Sembilan

We spent a week in Seremban and visited some of the highlights of this multicultural city.
Seremban is the capital city of the Negeri Sembilan State (not to far from Kuala Lumpur), we found out that Seremban only officially gained it's city status in January 2020 (so quite recently), another curiosity we found out about Seremban is that in the 1500's the Mingankabau people (originally from West Sumatra, Indonesia), settled here and influenced the culture, for example there are some buildings here with a strange and different roof architecture that resembles buffalo horns, this is because Minangkabau comes from a malay expression menang kerbau = winning buffalo.
Seremban is very multicultural, since we arrived we've seen a big Indian and Chinese community here along with Malay (from mingankabau descendant).

I have a lot of respect for you guys. Both of you have a lot of experience already visiting Malaysia and South East Asia and have a good sense of how locals and communities live here. Please do not be afraid to express your opinions be it bad or good so we could hear what outsiders think about their perspectives or where possible and necessary correcting you with facts or hear our own opinion towards any issue.

Thanks so much for that. We believe that we should say our opinions no matter what as long as we’re not offending anyone. Most of our experiences in Malaysia and south east asia are good that’s why we’ve been here for so long. we travel to see things not to criticise nor judge but everyone is entitled to have an opinion 🙃😁😁

That giant lake used to be the Convent girl school. it was demolished to make way for a new mall or something. They started with the underground car basement and rumour has it that water started to fill these and no matter how they try to take the water out, they can never completely drain it. They don't know where the water is coming from and people say the water has some healing properties. It's sad that they demolished the school as it was the architecture of the colonial days. Beautiful school.

If you notice, Malaysia is called the Federation of Malaysia. Its a collection of independent Sultanate kingdoms and Straits settlements that collectively formed Malaysia. Similar to the United States of America. Maybe thats why our flag is similar? 😊 So you have different traditions and culture in each state that is uniquely their own. Anyway, you guys are really enjoyable to watch. Keep it up guys! 😊

The lake in the city used to be where an all-girl’s convent school stands, they demolished it to rebuild the school elsewhere as the city was developing. But the site got flooded, no one’s bothered to flush it out and that’s why it’s a lake now.

So happy that you guys are back .. have been missing the both of you .. Christiana is indeed very brilliant and talented ..she always got her facts right and explained very clearly .. in msia particularly in the big cities there are many schools that were originally being established by christian missionnaries in the 19th century .. I also went to one .. my parents sent me to the Methodist Girls Primary and Secondary school in kl .. although I am a muslim but I went to a school led by the christians .. the reason was at that time many malay muslim parents sent their children to such school to provide good english stream education to their children .. and this partly explains why many msian are able to converse well in english .. ok guys as usual Joao never fails to produce quality and interesting vlog .. take care and stay safe always .. love you ❤

It's so amazing to see, that Seremban, the dear loving hometown I grew up in, started from a very quiet lazy town to a bustling city that is beginning to have foreign recognition. This video really touched my heart because Seremban will always be the place I will love forever, and you guys really made it look amazing, you almost made me shed a tear. Anyways, I love the video, super loving and super chill, if I had known you guys were visiting I would gladly drive you guys around and show you places unknown to foreigners to go see beautiful rural villages outside of the city, good food hotspots, beautiful lakes and parks, and a good place for enjoying a view, because you guys visited too little of Seremban 😂, but your video was mainly about travelling on foot so it's understandable. Oh and by the way, the body of water you found in front of your hotel, it wasn't originally a man made lake, it was previously a convent school for girls where my mother went. It was a beautiful school but unfortunately it was demolished which caused quite a stirr and controversy. The Church you were denied entry to, was a school that my uncle went to, and with or without covid visitors aren't permitted that much because its a school, and the ferocious lady who worked as a guard there, don't worry its been the same type of ladies since my uncle was kid in the 80's cause kids are quite naughty 😂, and yes my mother and my uncle and me are Malay Muslim but its quite common back in the days for Muslims to go study at catholic/convent schools, its a culture that is quite frowned upon up until recently. And the church you were able to visit was originally very old fashioned inside, but got renovated because of the old wood that stood throughout the hundreds of years began detoriating, moist and termites (I think). And the cendol restaurant you guys went to, is national treasure because it is so old and famous, that even my grandfather got to eat there, and it's a restaurant that had been running for 3 generations. Anyways I'm glad to have come across your videos, you both are so amazing and respectful, but don't be afraid to share your opinions about Malaysia because we Malaysians understand how foreigners think about our country. Keep it up with your amazing vibes, pray you success always, live long and prosper! If you want to contact me, let me know 😊

Its called Ulu Bendul. but its quite far off from Sban. about an hour or so drive but its in Negeri sembilan. But next nearest destination to visit from Sban would be the Port Dickson. its about a 35 / 45min drive from Sban. Theres lots to see n do in Port Dickson. Theres a lot of beaches there since its a coastal town. A light house, A Miltary Museum - Which is Awesome!!, trick art photography centers, exclusive high end hotel water chalets suites built right in the sea. Open the window and youre at the sea. you will feel like youre in a boat. PD has a lots of things to do.

Hi guys, the first church is on my former school ground, Anglo Chinese Methodist School housing a kindergarten, primary and secondary school started by Methodist missionaries to Malaysia. Understandably they restrict visitors for the children safety. The man made lake beside your hotel was the site of another mission school, Convent Girls school. It was torn down to make way for commercial development. Water seep through construction site, flooding it and rumour has it that it never dries up even in drought season...Divine intervention perhaps? Hope you enjoy your stay in Seremban , a quiet place to raise a family.

Welcome to Seremban Joa and Cristina. According to the folklore, the city was named Seri Embun by one of the earlier Sultans. There was and still is a palace up the hill near the Lake Garden. In the morning due to the hilly terrain around the Palace, the area was misty cool with dew drops. So the Sultan named the area/town Istana Seri (Beautiful) Embun ( Dew). There is also another palace up the mountain near the town of Kuala Pilah and it was called Istana Seri Menanti. Later on Seri Embun became Seremban and now it is the Capital of Negeri Sembilan State.

For food there a nice small restaurant name Nelayan, near the training ground of NS football club. They have all kinds of masak lemak e.g. deer, itik salai, porcupine, fishes and air gula enau. Another interesting fact about the Minangkabau culture is that they practise Adat Pepatih. The Pepatih culture is matrilineal and patriarchal, with property and land passing down from mother to daughter, while religious and political affairs are the responsibility of men. And, NS is the only state that practises this, whereas the other states mostly practises Adat Temenggung.

Hi guys, just to let you in on some info on that lake area you found in front of the OYO Hotel. There's a history behind it. That entire area used to be known as the old Convent Girls school of Fathima of Seremban. Now that is a very very old school that was run by a missionary of Nunhs from Britain during British colonization era of Malaysia. My mother and all her sisters were all ex students of this school. However sometime in the 90's I believe, there were some developers who somehow bought the land of this school and wanted to develop that area by building an apartment or a mall. Now in this school there was a huge stone statue of Mother Mary that was at the center of this school. Legend has it, that the developers tried to move the statue in order to develop the place. During the time when they tried to place foundations, thats when a strange occurence happened. The entire construction area was flooded due to a heavy thunder storm. That statue was said to have also been buried deep in that flood. Develpers tried to drain the water for years and years. For no apparent reason that entire area was Flooded. The developers also ran into financial problems during the 90s economic crisis. so the project was abandoned. That entire area was always covered with water, but heres the miracle, NEVER did it ever overflow. not even once and even after huge torrential downpours. That area never flooded the roads or the highways. the water levels there always remained the same. Many believed that its a miracle from Mother Mary, probably a lesson Never to mess with something sacred just for greedy selfish reasons. My mother used to recount that although we are all Hindu by birth, she did say that the Mother Mary Statue really did have a calming effect for all the students. Seremban residents always respected that area never to mess around. Nobody even goes fishing there too. So heres your legend about that area. ;)
