Amazing Grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found. Was blind, but now I see. Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fear relieved. How precious did that Grace appear the hour I first believed. My chains are gone, I’ve been set free. My God my savior has ransomed me. And like a flood, his mercy rains. Unending love, Amazing Grace. The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures. He will my shield and fortune be as long as life endures. My chains are gone… The earth pshall soon dissolve like snow the sun forebear to shine. But God who called me here below shall be forever nigh. My chains are gone… I once was lost but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see.

Hey it's the 77 year old grandma, this song was written back in the 1700's it's about someone saved by the grace of God, his knowing that he was spiritually blind, and lost, but now he is found and can see his need for redemption. It is a beautiful hymn and probably one of the most loved ever written. It speaks of God's grace, mercy and love.

Amazing Grace was written in the late 1700's. The My Chains are Gone was added more recently. It is often played with bagpipes which they replicated with the background hum at the beginning. It's played at a lot of funerals, but I like the way they made it sound so uplifting.

I find it fascinating that someone is unfamiliar with Amazing Grace. Many people with no Christian religious background have heard it at funerals (either live or movies/shows). The story of the English author of the lyrics is an interesting one and part of the story of the 2006 film by the same title. Those lyrics were "married" to the most familiar music in 1835. Contemporary Christian artist, Chris Tomlin, released the My Chains Are Gone version in 2006. Thanks for the great reaction!

I will say, having been raised in church, it's easy for a song like this, while powerful, to kind of become old hat. But this has me really listening to the words again...the second verse in particular. "'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved." It was God's grace that made me aware of my sin, which brought fear for the consequences. But it was that same grace that reached down and rescued me from my sin, and then I had no need to fear.

It's very hard to believe that you have never heard this song before. It was written in the 1700s and has been covered by hundreds of singers and choral groups. It is often used in funerals, and accompanied by bagpipes, hence the underlying drone at the beginning of this version. This is probably the best version ever done. Pentatonix does it again.

"Amazing Grace" was written by John Newton, a former 18th century sea captain/slave trader. Who after a near death experience at sea, repented for his evii deeds, became a priest, and became a leader in the Abolition of Slavery Movement.

You threw me a curve there, Hap, when you said you didn't know this song. One of the most iconic songs in the world. I can't tell you how many times I've heard this song; way too many to count. And this version is the best I have ever heard (even though they added something I have not heard before). Perhaps they are covering another version, but I liked it a lot. The classic line that is the most repeated and remembered from this song is: "I once was lost, but now I'm found; was blind, but now I see". The author of this beautiful poem (before it was put to music) was a British slave trader/runner/shipper name John Newton. When he was "saved" he stopped human trafficking and later became a minister. The poem he wrote became the anthem for those attempting to abolish slavery in the UK. They succeeded in 1807. It was later put to music and became the song we know. So this song has deep roots in human civil rights, and the words are a true testament to one man's emancipation from the evil of human slavery. I'm glad you got to hear and react to the very best version ever. 😊💕💕

This song is traditionally played at funerals (of all events you could choose from) and it's Scottish roots shown when you notice it's often played by bagpipes. I don't know if you noticed the one note held out by Kirstin and Kevin under the entire first part of the song that began with Matt, then Scott and finally Mitch singing in 3-part harmony? It sounded like a drone from a bagpipe. I lived their choice to give a nod to this songs' traditional roots. But WHY is this a funeral song?! I love that Pentatonix took a funeral song and stuck it as the first release from their new Christmas album! It will now go to being associated with Christmas in people's minds just as Hallelujah was. I like that they do that! And I also like that they can jump around with what kind of sound or genre they want to do. You can't pigeonhole this group. Be my eyes was intended to be a pop song that was catchy and could be played on the radio. And then they turn around and do something complex like this that hits you in the emotions and brings out huge harmonies and walls of sound and beautiful delicate moments combined with powerful strong moments. That's what I like about them so much! They're talented in so many different ways. The building they were in which I was shocked to find out was actually a building is made of glass. So when Kevin was doing (what'd you call it?) thunder claps he had stone, and glass for those gorgeous acoustics! Using the things around him to get that strong Echo that held out the claps and Amplified them! And when I put on my daughter's boyfriends headphones I could hear just how strong Matt's a company base was during that section and it just adds a whole new element to the epicness of this arrangement. And did Kirstin go for it or what?! And I can't say enough about Scott and Mitch! It's been said before and it applies to this song as well. They're such strong vocalists. But adding the beatboxing to this with that heavy Bass really brought it up another level and brought out the emotions for me anyway. But the cherry on top was Kevin's Solo in his beautiful sweet falsetto at the end. I was like thank you Pentatonix for making sure Kevin had a solo in this one. We see more Kevin solos in Pentatonix Christmas songs or holiday season songs. Thank you for your reaction and I'm glad you're on the mend! Love your hat by the way! And I also love trees as much as you do. I don't know what I'd do if there weren't trees!

Gods grace is defined in the Bible as unmerited, unearned favor. AG was written in 1779 by John Newton who chose God over a lucrative slave trading business. My Chains Are Gone was written by Chris Tomlin about 10 yrs ago and was added to the many previous added verses. I believe the songs meanings are sublime, and for everyone always. PTX put their hearts into it and gifted us with an indescribable rendition. Listen listen for Matt's descending bass during Kirsties verse. Amazing.

The man who wrote this song was a British slave trader on ships sailing the slave triangle. John Newton, was born in 1725 in London to a Puritan mother who died two weeks before his seventh birthday, and a sea-captain father who took him to sea at age 11. Newton himself was shipwrecked and held as a slave at one point in his life, serving the black mistress of a plantation owner but rejoined the slave trade when rescued. He became a Christian minister and an abolitionist. In writing this song he was seeking redemption and was in fact a mentor to William Wilberforce.

As others have said, it's a traditional Christian hymn, hundreds of years old (literally... it's from 1779). What I've seen a few get wrong is in saying the "My chains are gone" part is new. It's not. A guy named Chris Tomlin wrote those parts 14 years ago. Of course, Pentatonix has amped even that up, creating a more complex musical arrangement.

The song was written by a former captain of a slave trading ship. He realized that transporting slaves was wrong and quit to be a minister. He wrote this song about his realization that slave trading was wrong. "Was blind but now I see." Which makes Matt opening and Kevin closing the song symbolic. No offense, but it is very indicative of the state of mankind that these days there are people who have never heard Amazing Grace and are generally unfamiliar with the spiritual things that use to be so well-known and commonplace. But outside of that, this was a good reaction. PTX is a phenominon. Keep up the great work bud.

Not at all. Avi's last video with Pentatonix was "Can't Help Falling in Love" in 2017, and this dropped in 2020. A whole lot of stuff came out in the meantime. Top Pop vol I, At Home, and two Christmas albums, not to mention the groundwork for "The Lucky Ones".

Don't worry about not getting the meaning of the song, I'm a Christian and honestly... i have no idea what the song is about. I assume its about someone finding god and being saved by his love.... but isn't almost every Christian song about that?

So you "have no idea" what the song is about. But then tell us not only what it is about , but that ALL Christian songs are about the same thing. (the thing you didn't know). Ok.

Read up on John Newton. He was a slave ship captain in the 1700s who finally realized that he was saved by Gods grace, and never had to be bonded to his sin. Several good bios about his amazing life.

I like your reactions to this song. However, I am surprised that you had not ever heard this song before. I think it was written by a British slave trader who went through a dramatic change and became a believer in Christ. This song was inspired by his experience.
