This song was created to pay respect to a band member that passed away, Jasmine You. That silent part was dedicated to Jasmine.

*apologies for the length of the comment. I'm a little passionate about the scene* It took this band ten years to play Budokan. The entire show is pretty much devoted to the former bass player, Jasmine Yuu, who passed away from undisclosed illness around about the time the band got their major label deal. It was part of about three songs during the show that were dedicated and written specifically for Jasmine. There's a lot of small, and not so small tributes visually. Each member has dark feathers reminiscent of the costume of Jasmine, there's the butterfly that appears on the stainglass (which later morphs into a cherub), there's the extended moment of silence, and they bring out Jasmine's bass at the end of the show for the final bow. The whole thing was close to the three hour mark, and had two encores. So if you're impressed by 17mins then a full concert will blow you away. Hizaki cites Petrucci and Dream Theater as an influence, and Teru cites bands like Pantera and Metallica. Incidentally, Kamijo, the vocalist, is the same age as me. About 45. ... The band is from the Visual Kei movement/scene, which is not a genre. There's no fixed music genre or really rules at all to Visual Kei. It's a fairly nebulous idea. Bands play everything from sugary pop to deathcore. And they mix it in a blender sometimes for just insane genre defying awesomeness. Visual Kei is a niche scene that borrows from Japanese culture such as kabuki theater, and also has strong influences from Western metal, and particularly glam, though considering KISS makeup was inspired by Kabuki, the more I dig into Japanese music, the more I wonder just who influenced who. That aside Visual Kei can be viewed as similar to concept bands. They have a theme, (Versailles being the extremes of beauty and astheticism, and the costuming is based on French rococo, which ties in with an aristocratic vampire sub-plot they have going on) and bands will dress and write according to their theme. Each musician often has their own character, and often males will dress androgynous or outright crossdress like Hizaki. In early vk there was politics involved and a fairly strong rejection of the extreme conservatism and collectivism of Japanese society, but now it's just a part of the scene and for every artist making a statement, there's ten just having fun dressing up. Another little fact, the primary demographic for vk is young Japanese females. There's also connections between fashion houses and vk (Kei is usually used to designate a fashion style as opposed to a music term. Decora Kei and Oshare Kei being just two of many). Hizaki and Teru are both designers and have modelled. Versailles are one of the few vk bands signed to a major label. The majority of the scene is independent and many are self financed. The standard is very high in spite of this. So there you go, hopefully this gives you a primer. I'm still digging and studying after I found this band in 2015, and I'm still learning new things and revising what I know about Visual Kei. ... I just spent way too long writing this. Anyone reading all the way through, thank you very, very much. Now then, have you done Dir en grey yet? It's totally in your space. More "organic" in the composition, but these two tracks are very proggy, and very emotive and striking. Lots of changes. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Shinya's unorthodox drumming. Dir en grey - Vinushka live kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIqco7iBk9iTopM.html Dir en grey - The World of Mercy kzread.info/dash/bejne/fp5srtVpYb3Tn5s.html ... I'm disabled and sadly can't financially support your channel. I'd really like to though, it's really enjoyable content and it's obvious how genuinely you enjoy the music. Keep it up, and keep exploring.

Wonder if the recent Virtual Live Greta Van Fleet Candlelight Sessions Concert (see especially the song Broken Bells) given during this pandemic would be considered Visual Kei? It certainly has a wonderful sense of dress and costume and some very naturally attractive guys to look at. But don't let that distract from the music which is beautiful and compelling.

Yuki, the drummer, is the reason i picked drums back in 2009. He might not the "obvious drum machine" like most people would interested in, but he has a lot of accents and intricate fills that at that time i wasn't aware of. Since then, i always looked at him as my og drum teacher.

The best neo-classical metal band, best song writers and my all-time favorite. This band made me go back and study music theory and changed the way I play guitar. Their music is really some of the most complex I've ever heard from a metal band. Check out , "Ascendead Master" or "Aristocrat's Symphony." or some of Hizaki's (the cross-dressing guitarist) solo work like "Race Wish" "Grace and Dignity" or "Rusalka." Their current iteration is the band Jupiter, with a couple of different vocalists. "Arcadia" is a great one to check out from them.

Visual Kei at it's height. They're probably one of the best symphonic power metal (the other is Unlucky Morpheus - another band you need to see). Visual Kei has faded a bit in Japan and Versailles seems to be inactive in the last couple of years. As I mentioned, Unlucky Morpheus, is another metal band (they call it "Technical Melodic Speed Metal") with probably the best female vocalist (Fuki) in rock/metal today, she's credited on at least 100 songs/albums. For a really interesting composition, see CADAVER/REVADAC - this one has the sheet music at the bottom to help - kzread.info/dash/bejne/ka2msLShedXLqag.html

Best vkei era 97 - 2005 then had short revival before everyone quit around 2012 to 2015. Since then visual kei has literally become so structured and consistently made that it has a distinct sound now. It's just a bunch of clowns in bad makeup playing basic power chords then they try to sell you 4 chekis for $30. A band will release 8 singles through the year and then sell you a full album at the end of the year containing the same exact songs except it'll come with some poster signed and basically 2 extra tracks put together in fruity loops in 2 minutes usually some fucking intro the band didn't use mostly because they didn't know where to fit it since everyone has the musical understanding of an elementary school jazz kid. The music is the equivalent of putting together a small engine block using your teeth in a pitch dark room with 3 pitbulls biting you and using tape and cum instead of bolts while high on adderal. But in music form. I actually cannot believe it's still a thing but hey at least we got madmans esprit.

@@CB-lr2wz which by the way exposed how crucial especially teru and yuki were to hizaki's sound the real backbone of both bands is yuki that guy absolutely carried and teru can easily outplay hizaki. Hizaki is really good at melodic solos but he's been sounding the same since Rosario straight up. But hey at least he's one of the best onnagata role out there.

The primary conceit of the band is they're a bunch of vampires from 18th century France and so they do indeed lean into lots of baroque (tons of counterpoint in their early days, between synth tracks and guitars) and classical elements in their music.

You might like their side project Jupiter which was started when Kamijo wanted to focus on some solo work for a while. They have a similar sound but a bit more straightforward power metal. Unfortunately the only only original members are Teru and Hizaki, they seem to have trouble locking down a regular bassist. They have had two vocalists Zin who sounded similar to Kamijo and Kuze who has more of a traditional power metal voice. Kuze has also worked with Takayoshi Ohmura of Kami band on his solo project.

Next Galneryus / Angel of Salvation (live) for more epicness!. They had a bassist that died but he had a dream do play in Budakan. Several years later they fulfilled his dreams (with a new bassist) so this song is very emotional for the group. If You look at the version with english subtitle you understand. And I think that the first lady of Japan is in this concert 'couse it is one of her favorite band. So imagine the emotional press....

The japanese rock scene it seems is the best in the world right now. Almost a rock renaissance I would say. If not _a_ rock renaissance (forget about the almost). Edit: Also should add this song had me shedding a tear and I don't even understand the language -- but the way the guitar player is lip singing along with the singer... I don't know, somehow just moved me.

As someone who started in your position, I would suggest to go with Jupiter just as Taran858 said. This was how I started back when Zin was the singer in Jupiter, but then I got back to Versailles from time to time. Now Versailles is my no 1 band, so if you take the time to get used to Kamijo's voice, you will start to hear how he uses it to convey emotion in every part of the song and it fits the band very well.
