Some quick Irish history: Ireland used to be ruled by England for hundreds of years. After some failed rebellions, The Republic of Ireland gained their independence in 1916 (mentioned in the song). Northern Ireland was still loyal to the crown, but attempted to leave in the 70s/80s. The IRA (terrorist org) was cause for a number of bombings during the 80s - something Ireland calls The Troubles. It was also a big conflict between Catholics and Protestants. This song was made after a bombing killed two children. The "zombies" are the soldiers and fighters who are blindly following in the footsteps of their fellow man, shooting, killing, bombing with no other real reason than religion and freedom of state.

It might be pertinent to also mention the murders of Irish Catholics, including children, by armed forces. The burning of catholics out of their homes. The The marching of Orange men down their steeets. Its too easy, to blame the troubles soley on the RA... The song seems to be about injustice on both sides.

@@michelleMc2024 Unfortunately two wrongs don't make a right; protestants and catholics have been at squabbling with each other for centuries. The northern Irish situation just gave the extremists on both sides an opportunity to escalate it into violence. They're actually the same kind of individuals; these kind of men, mostly men, would be the ones to be involved in the violence no matter what religion they were born into. It takes a certain kind of brain that can justify to themselves that collateral damage of innocent people absolves them of guilt and feelings of remorse. May they all burn in hell.

@@Insolation1 totally in agreement. It's a shameful episode that none of us can be proud of. Ireland rebelled against English rule 100 years ago. Ireland divided into pro-England and pro-independence factions, largely based on the catholic/protestant divide. The British had an on again-off again military occupation over the following decades. Some Irish indepence partisans became radicalized and committed to guerrilla resistance and acts of terrorism. That's at least how I understand the conflict as an American

  • @bconway9

The Troubles stemmed from the partition of Ireland in 1920. The north of Ireland became its own state (Northern Ireland) within the United Kingdom comprising of Counties Antrim, Fermanagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone while the remaining 26 counties became a free state and later a Republic in 1937. In Northern Ireland the Government was Unionist to the British crown nearly all political offices being gerrymandered into unionist control, especially in a city like Derry where there was a large Catholic majority but a Protestant controlled council. If you look on google it will say that the troubles started in 1960 and ended in 1998 with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement but its not as simple as that. We still live in a largely segregated society, where you go to separate schools due to your religion, if you need social housing that is decided by your religion. The first time kids from Catholic and Protestant backgrounds might properly socialize together maybe in university or in the workplace.

Sad when a good song with great message is lost when people don't understand what they are hearing... or reading. I have seen you miss half the message in the videos you watch due to your mucking about thinking you know whats up. I won't suggest anything for you to watch or hear until you learn how to actually view things. The message you are missing is that the war machine has not stopped ever.. that they keep sending our sons and daughters to fight wars for them.(99% of the time over lies) Continuing the cycle of grief in families for generation after generation and to this day NOBODY seems to get it. They will always find a reason to kill. WE must find the reason NOT too. Zombie means all those who blindly continue to support the cycle of this war machine system. Those who do not realize both sides are fighting for right.. nobody thinks they are evil. She was personally affected by the one in her country. And this is her venting her frustration over decades of dealing with this issue. Now you seem like you like music.. so i don't think you mean to miss things. But you can't rely on your masses to keep giving you information and expect to be told truth all the time.. Please.. research your songs just a bit. Then you might come into more of an understanding of what is meant. I also recommend paying attention to the videos.. not looking away.. and putting on and off glasses.. making faces for camera.. Authentic reactions with songs get way more viewership. We like to see someone take in.. and absorb the message and meanings in songs. But I wouldn't wanna recommend anything when i see you miss so much of the content in the videos.. you can't follow the story if you don't watch the story. And personally i am looking to see what people think of the message. I can't get that if you don't understand what is being relayed. I have only watched three of your reactions and it has happened in all three. I know you are still growing and learning so i hope you see this as a helpful critique and not as an attack. You seem like a nice enough fella..

He was the one that explained to me what the song was about , the troubles in Ireland with the English - I always took the line "In your head we're still fighting" to mean that whenever anyone thought of Ireland at that time, the first thought was always the violence and not the normal people going about their lives.Brilliant review, another great one of theirs I haven't seen mentioned is "Ode to my family" a classic in my opinion, well worth a reaction or if not just a listen .Great reaction and keep up the good work!

In the early 70's we had an Irish family move in next door. They decided to leave Ireland when their 7 year old boy was brought home by 2 British soldiers who said he was out playing with a crudely made toy wooden gun. They told them they were lucky they had not shot him.

I heard it explained that the "Zombies" were the children who grew up throughout the "troubles" and didn't see anything strange about the troops on the street and the destruction of the world they lived in.

The zombie metaphor is about how in a war, people are killing other people because of past wrongs and people that are long dead but still alive in these people's heads. Wrongs that the people that are being killed now, especially civilians and children, didn't commit. "It's not me, my family. In your head, they are fighting". It's also about the loss the parents of those two kids felt when their kids died. At least that's what I get from it, as a statement of the senselessness and innocent victims of war in general

The Bad Wolves cover of this did it solid justice and is most definitely one you should react to! Another amazing and beautiful Cranberries song is Linger. Keep it up dude! ❤❤

I know people have already said it several times, but please check out the Bad Wolves cover/tribute of Zombie. They were actually going to have Dolores sing with them, but she passed away the day before they were supposed to be in studio. They decided to go ahead with the cover and make it a tribute to her memory as well.

Heyyyy, just subscribed today, love your reactions. As an Irish girl myself, just FYI her vocal technique at the parts you talked about is taken from keening, a traditional Irish cry for wakes and funerals, in mourning.

RIP Dolores O'Riordan forever missed. The Cranberries was actually the first concert I went to and it was the debut of this album "No Need To Argue" that "Zombie" was released on. It was memorable and I am so glad that I was able to see them in concert, I was just about to be a freshman in high school so a lot of new things happening. So thank you for reacting to this with respect because they truly are an incredible band and Dolores, a true angel now.

somebody's probably already said so, but just in case they haven't: that thing, that little uplift that delores did at the end of a line, is from the gaelic, a very musical people -- a sound called "keening." the word is still used, even here in the US, to describe the sound of women crying or wailing at a death.

Your diversity in taste is impressive Mista Gibby Gang. The reaction culture is possibly the most genuine way for artists to receive honest feedback that will help them further increase the quality of their art. It is also the most effective way to generate awareness of talented struggling underground artists. I recommend you have a Gibby Gang " The Underground Evaluations" where your focus is specifically on underground artists, artist not in the media, signed to major labels or completely independent of labels all together. It will build a movement that will reverse the major label dominion over the American music industry and help to reawaken our nation and the world to the true talent America as an artistic force actually has. We saw this once before with The Grunge Movement, our quintessential "American Renaissance " that awakening of art and culture that changed the world in the early and mid 90's and artistically gave birth to everything we have today. Looking forward to seeing and hearing more from you Mista Gibby Gang.
