Y’all, they started music videos. They were the first… they called them “promo videos” that they made and sent out when they couldn’t travel for TV appearances anymore because of demand and Beatlemania. They were the beginning of music videos. They wanted to have fun, their manager wanted them to “play instruments,” so these goofy videos were the result. You’d have to watch the movie, “Help” to understand the “snow” in this one. Rule of thumb, The Beatles did everything first.

Comparing this to the high production value videos of the 80s, 90s, 2000s, etc., is like trying to compare a Model T to a Tesla. By November of 1965 the Beatles popularity was so massive that it became virtually impossible for them to perform live, as they had been doing the previous 3 years. The idea was hatched for the Beatles to be filmed miming to 5 songs that were the bands most recent hits. On Nov 23, 1965, filming began in the afternoon and continued well in to the morning of the 24th. This idea was truly undiscovered territory as the "music video' was not in the music lexicon yet. By having these videos, the Beatles management could send the video to be screened by audiences instead of the band attempting to perform live. Which by this time had become impossible, due to the pandemonium of their live audiences. So with these video's a new era had dawned, the Music video. Loved your reactions Asia and BJ, RNB

From Songfacts: John Lennon has described this time of his life as his "fat Elvis period." In a 1971 interview with Rolling Stone, Lennon said this is one of his favorite Beatles records, because, "I meant it - it's real." He added: "The lyric is as good now as it was then. It is no different, and it makes me feel secure to know that I was that aware of myself then. It was just me singing 'Help' and I meant it." Paul McCartney helped Lennon write the song, but did not realize it was actually Lennon calling for help until years later.

The Beatles were kings of comedy in so many ways and this video shows this clearly. But the song itself was serious---it was, as John admitted many years later, his call for Help after the crazy, frantic life of being a Beatle... I'm sure there are more and better comments on this that will be made. But this is the gist. Funny, isn't it?---that a subject that was so serious should be treated in this funny way---and that sounds real to me. Embarrassing to admit needing help--so laughing about it and making it a farce...By the way, this was a song written in a hurry, when the producer asked for a title song of some sort for their second film. So this might be a reflection of that off the cuff process. As for modern videos, the Beatles again led the way---with Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane.

They were also responding to the new pop art sensibility. Pop art was a serious art movement with offshoots in music and fashion, etc. It was also a cultural moment and a state of mind, that celebrated all that was youthful, spontaneous, fun, un-pompous, creative, experimental, humorous and most importantly, accessible to all. Being a 'pop' star was actually still a cool thing back then, as was not taking oneself too seriously. Once TV companies and the music industry learned from the Beatles massive success that there was big money to be made from this new youth movement, of course it all began to be commercialised and therefore debased to some degree, and 'pop' stars too began to take themselves and their product much more seriously, sometimes embracing and sometimes rejecting the commercial aspects. But in the mid-60s, it was all still fresh, new and exciting - an ongoing, not too serious experiment. You simply can't judge something like this simple, deliberately absurd, cheaply thrown together bit of film against modern day music videos which represent the pinnacle of glossy commercial, money-based, highly specialised, professional music industry productions.

You're killing me here Asia. This is from 1965 long before MTV, some guy just told them to sit on stools and sing the song. Videos didn't exist yet, they had no idea what they were doing. The great thing with The Beatles was that even though they were the biggest act in history they never too themselves seriously and never let the fame get to their heads. They were always very down to earth and extremely funny and talented young guys. You were spot on BJ, this song was a cry for help by John. He called this his Fat Elvis period because he was eating and drinking like a pig. The insanity of the whole Beatlemania craze was beginning to make him very constricted and he was becoming depressed. You have to realize that these guys couldn't just go out and about like normal people, they would have been crushed by the crazy hysterical fans. John stated just a couple of months before his death that this song and "Nowhere Man" were two of his favorite Beatle songs that he wrote because they were real, it what he was feeling in 1965 when he wrote them both. He stated that they were just as relevant for him in 1980 as they were in 65 when he wrote. You can hear a huge Bob Dylan influence on John in his lyrics here. There is actually a great color live performance of this song from a tv special in 65 called The Beatles Blackpool Night Out. The color and sound of this clip is really good for 1965.I know that I have recommended that one for the two of you and is much more entertaining then this clip. John killed the vocals with great backing vocals by Paul and George and John's great sense of humor is on full display while he was introducing the song and well worth the watch. "Help" was a big #1 hit in both the UK and America in the summer of 65 and was from their album "Help". "Nowhere Man" was off of their iconic album "Rubber Soul" released in December, 1965 and also went to #1. This song is well worth a reaction and is one of my favorite Beatles songs. No video for this one, just the audio from the album. "Rubber Soul" is easily one of the all time great albums ever. ☮️✌️💕👌🐇Happy Easter guys.

Hi Guys ... follow your great reactions all the time ... I'm English and in my late 60's, it will be almost impossible for you to understand what "The Boys" brought to the world at that time. Our world was literally in Black & White ... not in a racial way ... Britain had not long come through a world war, our cities had been pounded sometimes flat. Entertainment was still in the style our fathers enjoyed but as the 1960's started the young had begun to work & they had cash to spend. The USA had brought Elvis to our radio's and cinemas along with others like Buddy holly ... but we kids needed our own Stars and The Beatles brought it home. They were typical out spoken youth pushing against authority of old ... not Gods ... just 4 blokes that had something to say about our life and loves. Their music on the radio was the only way to hear what the message was. My family did not have a TV in the house until about 1962 ... no telephone in the house until 1973 ... just the radio and dozens of talented groups & singers with something to say. So please cut "The Boys" some slack ... the video today looks childish but to us way back in 65, it was them not taking it too seriously, just messing about. I remember the family sitting around the radio in 1968 listening to the weekly pop chart show and The Beatles track - I Am The Walrus - was played ... my father turned off the radio ... Asia, the Beatles were known for having a great sense of humor...witty, irreverent. That's why the media loved them. Their videos and feature films where groundbreaking at the time. No one else was doing videos at the time. Try to think of the times...the early '60s.

Asia, with all the hearts you gave out on almost all the comments I"m sure you got the message. That was really sweet. I feel like a lot of these "videos" are a form of time travel. If you've ever seen "Back To The Future" you can understand how disorienting that could be, and he only went back 30 years! This is over 50 years ago. I was just a kid then, but remember it all too well. I had a chance to go see them live, but my parents would not let their eight year old go with a bunch of girls to a concert at the state fairgrounds where the Coliseum had just blown up the year before ( an accident). Can't begin to tell you how much that affected me. Strange how life events can change you. A year later and I was learning to play music. Old dude now and still playing. As Ringo still says today, " Peace and Love!".

This was one of the first promotional videos that would eventually be called music videos when MTV started in 80. Part of the nature of the promotional video is to have, as Asia mentioned, to put a visual to the recording. Just right there a band might not treat it to seriously. They’re not performing, just miming. In this instance, it was a super simple concept to huddle under an umbrella and be playfully goofy (likely to offset the dark lyrics). Just look at it as the Beatles having fun while filming a promotional clip (which was very rare, and used to supplement touring) in a TV studio. :-)

I could easily spend several paragraphs explaining this moment and this song in the Beatles' career, but I will be brief. This is the opening song of the movie Help! It comes at a time when the Beatles were tired from always being on the road and not even sure what city they were in half the time because it was mostly hotel room to stage and move on. It is literally their cry of enough! It also explains why some of the movie Help! was shot in the Bahamas for no other reason that they insisted that they go somewhere warm for some of the shoot. Okay, semi=brief.

Please don't judge the song by the cheesy video - a then-common, lip-synced TV appearance with ridiculous video set to the original recording. What you watched was NEVER considered a "video" in its day. It was merely a clip of an early TV appearance where they did what they were told to do by the TV people. What you saw wasn't their decision. BTW - HELP was also the title of The Beatles' second movie. Listen to their music. You'll enjoy it all!!! And that would be even more meaningful for you if you take the time to listen to The Beatles chronologically. Their early stuff was so, soooo good, & soooo much fun, and to actually hear their musical progression as it happens, to hear their talent grow & blossom in a VERY short time (1962-1970) is a listening experience you should definitely let yourselves enjoy! One of their earliest songs that I love is I'll Get You. Good old rock-n-roll, Lennon/McCartney style!

Watch the movie "Help!" Either on your show or just for yourself. Loads of music and Laughs. It was their second movie in 1965, a sort of spy movie [James Bond films were very popular back in those days] or spy spoof where the Beatles get mixed up in some kind of trouble with a religious cult, and an inept mad scientist and his less than normal IQ assistant lol. It revolves around Ringo acquired a large red ring someone sent him and he cannot get it off of his finger. Bring in the British M9 or SIS to help protect them and more inept chaos occurs. Lots of good songs and comedy, some British humor may require a 2nd watch form us in the USA to get all the jokes. Ticket sales for tours might suffer if acts were seen to often on TV so anything you find PRIOR to 1981 is very RARE..

You got to understand the Beatles INVENTED the "music video". There were no music videos yet in the world. This certainly was not their best, but their public was wanting to see them so badly they let them have something to see of them. Basically "a hard day's night" [the movie] incorporated the first music videos of the rock era. It's not really fair to compare what they were doing then to the major productions that followed them as music videos. The song itself was the main point and the true solid star of this release. It was a number one for many weeks as they kept releasing songs that went right to the top of the charts one after the other. Great song! That really is what the video was presenting. The antics of the group of individuals was just for the fun of it for the viewers.

They were not called videos then as this art for did not exist until the Beatles. There's one take were they have Ringo on a stationary bike as if it was his drum kit.
