Ashley! I really enjoyed you actually GETTING it. Every note and every chord progression is seriously thought through. This is no garage band and they're not using 18th century tonality. Donald Fagen has called his writing "pantonal." In other words, half the time you can't tell if he's even IN a key. The chords have added notes to thicken them and divert you from figuring out what key they're in at any one time. This is why Steely Dan is so unique. Their music stimulates the brain by poking it with something it can't readily interpret, thus you can listen over and over and never get tired of hearing it.

I haven't figured out how the drummer keeps that kick bass drum rhythm, and still play the top drums in lock groove. Its great seeing that more people getting into the tunes I grew up on. I like to go way back "Dirty Work - Can't Buy Me A Thrill" (1972) "Any Major Dude - Pretzel Logic" (1974) “Kid Charlemagne - The Royal Scam” (1976) Hard to find a bad Steely Dan song.

In the Germantown section of Philadelphia where I worked, I was the only Caucasian for miles, they referred to Steely Dan as white man's Jazz. Also there is no mr. Dan, I will do my best to keep the rest of this comment family-friendly. It refers to a marital Aid that would be used by a female. Sorry but I checked the comments and I didn't see anyone explaining why they're called Steely Dan. Thank you, thumbs-up and have a nice day.

Skate a little lower now… pretty sure that line sealed the deal for you. The lyrics are as catchy as the music. Cool vibe to this tune but pretty hard to have empathy for an aging frat boy trying to hook up with a 19 yr old by plying her with weed and tequila. Sounds like a recipe for date rape. You learn to not let some of the Dan’s disturbing subject matter and lowdown protagonists get in the way of a good song.
