Excellent reaction. You took the time to appreciate the amazing lyrics and fantastic musicianship! Imagine, ...this is the opening track of their debut album in 1972. What a killer start to their career. Both Walter Beck and Donald Fagen the band's front men were just in their earlier 20s. Glad you also noted Denny Dias on guitar (sitar modded). Super groovy!

Also, Donald Fagen (keyboards - lead vocal) and Walter Becker (base and backing vocal here) are the two main guys writing and composing for the band. Jeff Baxter is the lead guitarist here. A significant piece of info regarding this band is that they had many high quality musicians revolving in and out all the time. Many were studio musicians, or "hired guns" with lots of talent, but not "rock stars." Lastly, their name, "Steely Dan" was a reference to a sexual device from a novel, a steam-powered dildo.

Do it again love this song one of my 2 fav from Steely Dan this one makes me drive fast when I hear it in car. My other fav is Hey 19 verse 1: Stole from him in water (as in anything insignificant you can get water any where), then killed him with a gun (fire till he done), they catch you, mourners singing(Mourners=snitches) judge(hangman) doesnt convict puts you back on street. verse 2: Your have a girl not the prettiest or best for you(no High Climber)catcher her screwing your friend you end relationship and find a new wild one but she makes you sad. she knows she makes you sad but she also knows you will be back. I always though this is same girl but it might be 2 different girls. verse 3: Is just gambling problem cant stop keep going back to Vegas just to gamble I would say song is all about circle of life repeating itself

Also, this was the first song off their first album. Imagine STARTING OUT like this. No one had ever heard anything like it before...

Stealing water is probably based in the “old west”, like in the movies about the late 1800’s in the US. Good water was important in surviving in the summer heat. Long before air conditioning!

Trying to figure out the meaning of the lyrics is a huge task on the first listen. You deserve credit for trying!

You probably know by now but Steely Dan was a band not a person. Nobody in the band was named Steely Dan.
