As someone said in the comments this was his first big solo performance after recovering from polyp surgery. He had to retrain his voice to be able to sing like this again and seemed to have had a very hard time being unable to sing. It is even more meaningful because Rainy Blue's original singer (a Japanese singer called Hideaki Tokunaga) also underwent polyp surgery like him and had composed this song after recovery.

The Japanese singer never got his voice back. It was his retirement song Not Onew

Taemin never ages, I think he's a vampire. But seriously Onew...... Our Tofu leader is currently on a sold out solo tour in Japan and winning everyone's hearts again. This is such a special song for him because of spending months prior unable to sing while recovering from vocal chord surgery.

IMO 2013 for SHINee was wild and even until 2014 they were doing schedules non stop : 4 albums, show in japan to promote I'm Your Boy, and the huge SWIII (their 3rd tour and this one was worldwide) so at one point it was too much, you can see at some show everyone was exhausted to the bone and sadly Onew got injured. For a singer, not be allowed to just speak, must have been a nightmare. Rainy Blue is a cover and the composer Hideaki Tokunaga had the same issue with his throat and he composed this song right after his recovery, that's why it's an emotionnal song for Onew because they shared the same story.

@@daiisuu2171 I remember the other members talking about visiting Onew and he couldn't even talk and he struggled during dress rehearsal with this song. I'm sure it was stressful for everyone. Thankfully Hideaki Tokunaga and Onew overcame their conditions and were both able to sing this song.

Onew had just had throat surgery. There was a 50/50 chance he might not be able to sing again. He had to go through throat training again. This was first concert after the surgery. This song had meaning because the original singer (this is a cover) had to undergo the same surgery as well. That is why it was so emotional.

"I'm Your Boy" is the name of the SWC IV concert. This was a very poignat and pivitol moment for Onew. In May, 2014, Onew had undergone throat surgery to remove vocal cord polyps and vocal fold mucosa reconstruction. Afterwards, he wasn't allowed to speak for three months to give his throat time to heal. This is known as a very dangerous surgery for singers, as they could lose their ability to sing permanently. There was no guarantee that Onew's voice would return, let alone be the same or good enough to sing again. Onew said that he was so frustrated at one point, he wanted to just give up and retire, however, his SHINee brothers stayed by him constantly supporting him in his recovery. Leading up to SHINee's SWC IV, "I'm Your Boy" concert in March 2015, Onew hadn't done much singing other than re-training his voice, as he had totally lost all the voice training he had studied and needed to totally start fresh. In addition, there were no guarantees on the quality of his voice, and he still didn't know if his voice would hold up for a full concert. The choice of "Rainy Blue" was very intentional. It is a song written and sung by a Japanese artist, Hideaki Tokunaga, who underwent the very same surgery as Onew. Unfortunately, that artist never regained his voice and had to retire. The mainly SHAWOL audience in the Tokyo Dome, understood all this and thus the loud support and cheers for Onew. This is why Onew was so emotional, as he finally realized his voice was not only restored, but as he said later, even better than pre-surgery. His love is singing and he wouldn't lose that part of himself.

I don't want to take away from this comment because it's very lovely but since Onew is the oldest in the group, it would be better to say "his SHINee brothers stayed by him" or if you want to use the Korean word you can say "his SHINee dongsaeng stayed by him". "Hyung" is only for men who are older than the man in question.

Ahhhh... seeing people react to Onew feels so fulfilling. Like he's a very talented vocalist who had to overcome mountains to get where he is today. Just happy to see a good guy winning.

Onew’s voice is one of the most beautiful and unique voice in the world. I love him so much and he is my favorite singer ❤️ Taemin is my bias wrecker and he did an amazing job playing the piano.

At that time Onew had juz done with his throat surgery and was not able to speak for several months, that’s why he was so emotional

I looove this performance. You're right... while there's a lot that's "manufactured" in the industry, the people in it can still feel great passion for it. SHINee in general is a good example of this... when they started their careers it was very rare that an idol would make their own song or contribute to it much other than maaaaybe lyrics. Jonghyun absolutely destroyed that idea by not only releasing albums that were all self composed, but by composing songs for other artists as well. Key one day showed up with a ppt to present his ideas for costumes for their concerts and just visual direction to what he wanted for his group... company thought it was awesome and they implemented it. Key also said his vision for his solo work was a fight with the company because he had an idea in mind and it required a lot of convincing from his part that it was worth it and worth the budget. Taemin's discography is literally a reflection of his mind. Minho hand picked Don't Call Me and has written countless raps as well and Onew is very very detailed in how he wants to portray songs. If you watch the behind the scenes for the production of everything from recording of the albums, recording of the MVs, concert preparations and all you will see these guys pour their souls into their work. Yes, there's a WHOLE team of people backing them up and helping them make it possible, but A LOT of what you see is also them.

I am so glad that you continue to react to SHINee, they are so talented and their live performances are one of the best in the industry. I wish that they were more known in the USA and the whole world.

I fully agree - but then I get selfish and happy that they are truly loved by a selected few who have discovered thei treasure and not want the trendiness spoil the fun. BUT I know that is selfish of me . Their brilliance shines thu once you discover them - you are hooked and they have a special place in your heart. Just grateful I found them in the strangest of places (not social media) but thru Minho's acting. So the journey continues

Their voices was all I need it to look them up and after that I have been watching their music videos, concerts, variety shows, etc. every single day. I love and appreciate the sacrifices that they have done in their more than 14 years career, so I don’t mind sharing them with new fans ❤️

For anyone who has known SHINee for any period of time knows just how much this song meant to Onew. For months prior he was unable to sing and there were even thoughts he may never sing again after having surgery on his vocal chords. When he cries at the end, I think it’s as much emotion as it is relief that his amazing voice was still just that - AMAZING! I could literally listen to him sing for the rest of my life and never get tired of it. And yes Taemin can play piano and play it well.

Fact When I onew singing rainy blue I was coming from a complicated throat surgery... They said I couldn't sing the same anymore. That's why that feeling when he sang that day and the plus Taemin in the Piano

I want THAT jacket!❤ My first exposure to this song was in 1991 by American recording artist Rita Coolidge.

You have to know the back story to this. He was emotional because it was his first solo performance after a vocal surgery. It was uncertain whether he would still be able to sing again (let alone at the same capacity) after undergoing the surgery. He also was not able to talk for months and had to retrain himself. He chose this song because the original singer underwent the same surgery and was sadly never able to sing the same way again.

Onew's voice is unique and special.

Music is pure emotion to me so if you can't feel it then what's the point. Jinki (Onew) had so many reasons why he cried for this particular performance as mentioned in previous comments, but historically SHINee has been a group that has never suppressed their emotions and I think that's why their live performances are so iconic and unforgettable. It has always separated them from the rest in the Kpop industry. SHINee never follows....💎💎💎💎💎
