I like Rush because it is only 3 guys. They have the greatest drummer in the world who writes the lyrics. The bass player is one of the top 5 greatest bass players of all time and he sings the drummer's words and plays keyboard and foot pedal synthesizers. The guitar player is one of the greatest of all time, although he tends to be underappreciated. They play odd time signatures and make it sound natural. The lyrics are thought provoking and the albums always have a theme that connects all the songs. Their studio recordings are works of art and their live performances are awe inspiring demonstrations of pure talent. They are extremely tight in their execution and they are known as the transition kings because they easily move from one pattern to the other smoothly and flawlessly. Rush is the greatest ensemble of musicians ever assembled and each of their albums are a total masterpiece. I can never get tired of Rush. They are the best.

Alex's shift from 12 to 6 string at 10:52 is so quick and smooth most people miss it altogether. 😊

I have rewound that a few time's just to catch it after I first noticed the switch. Have watched it dozens of times now, and I still miss it occasionally. So smooth.

He is probably the best rock drummer in history, one of the best bassists of all time, who also plays a keyboard and sings. Ridiculous guitars and all that sound comes out of 3 people. That is why we are fans.

Rush is three guys who can fill an arena or studio with the richness of sound most other bands would need 5-7 people to create. They are each masters of their instrument. Their music is always interesting. They played in time-signatures that "don't exist". They are the masters of the transition, creating atmosphere, and of storytelling. Neil was a passionate and intelligent lyricist. Rush was often accused of being "too smart for average rock listeners", as a *criticism*(!), and reason why they weren't popular. They never caved, never dumbed it down, always wrote the music THEY wanted to play. They made it a point to write music that they wouldn't get tired of playing live on tour, especially Neil, the drummer. They were true to themselves first, fans a close second, and record companies last. Neil Peart - "Your favorite drummer's favorite drummer". Widely considered to be in AT LEAST the top 3 best rock drummers in history, if not flat-out #1. Geddy Lee - One of the best bass players to ever slap. Alex Lifeson - The most criminally-underrated rock guitarist of all time. These three men inspired generations of musicians. So many bands of the past 3 decades owe much to this band and will freely and enthusiastically say so. These guys never quit. Never slowed down (except when Neil's wife and daughter died), and NEVER sold out. They were the soundtrack to most of my life.

First of all, great songs for only 3 guys. Eddie Van Halen was asked one time, how It felt to be the greatest guitar player in the world. He replied, You would have to ask Alex Lifeson. Form Rush.😊

Those are tubular bells… they are a musicians band, incredible players… amazing lyrics, thought provoking, the music and lyrics take you on a journey. Above all… their attention to detail… This was my first time seeing Rush at this very concert at the Montreal Forum… this performance w the double neck guitars was the highlight of that show for me and still resonates today. Leave it to Neil Peart (pronounced w an “ear” and not like the shampoo) to bring to life the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

I saw Rush on this tour in London 1981.....it is without doubt the greatest gig I've ever seen....and I've seen plenty!!! Quite simply three geniuses at the peak of their creativity and masters of their art 🎸........hey you should never pause halfway through a guitar solo!!! Great reaction 👏👏

I was living in Gloucestershire, about 25 miles as the crow flies from where "Hemispheres" was recorded in 1978. At the time, I had no idea there was even a recording studio there in eastern Wales. I'm so grateful to have had Rush in my life since my early teen years. What a glorious journey it was.

The song sounds like it could be based on a movie, but it was inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem “Kublai Khan.” Classic performance!

As someone who is a Rush geek since 1976, It was my first Rush concert on their Moving Pictures tour 1981, this song was played to the tee! One of the best concerts I have ever been to. To sum up what makes millions of people follow this Canadian trio is "3 God gifted talents coming together and creating a sound that no other can make." Watching this video demonstrates their joy playing with utter ease, the brotherhood they share and the pure mastery of their craft. Check out their catalog of music, their early career (1974 to 1980), their mid career (1981 to 2000) and their mature periods (2000 to 2015). I say you cannot go wrong with any of their history making great music.

As many here have said, simply the greatest trio of virtuoso musicians in the history of music, making unbelievable music with meaningful lyrics. We will never see this musical phenomenon repeated.

And because Neil and Geddy are considered one of the best of all time at their instrument's is why Alex is often over looked, as great guitarists are extremely plentiful and are usually the main focus of most bands instrument wise, Zeppelin were all greats but Page was the face, VanHallen Eddy, Jimmy Hendrix experience, AC/DC Angus Young and so on, where with Rush almost every reaction video Neil's drumming is one of the things people notice first and Geddy's bass playing and versatility is next, and unless the reactor is a guitarist Alex gets lost,Alex isn't a shredder like Eddy or a true blues guitarists like SRV(who is) but he has a true unique way of playing between his cord progressions and his many different elements like reggae, and flamingo

I saw RUSH 6 times, once in Ft Worth, TX, after seeing them in Dallas the previous week. I think it was the same year this was recorded! I saw RUSH the first time in late 1974 after their first album was released, but before their 2nd album Fly By Night was released. The drummer, Neil Peart, RIP Professor, joined the band in late July, 1974. He became the main lyricist for their next 18 studio albums, writing 95% of the lyrics! IMO, this was one of the many contributing factors to creating the greatness that is RUSH. Alex & Geddy are fantastic musicians in their own right, but Neil's lyrics & spectacular drumming are what pushed me to become the RUSH fan I am today!!! When I saw them in 1974 they played mostly from the first album, which was heavily blues influenced, as Geddy & Alex's influence were from many early blues/rock artists! When I heard their 4th album, 2112 in 1976, I was blown away!!! It's the album that went gold & eventually platinum I think, & allowed them to choose their own music path, rather than some record company's plan!!! There are several great documentaries about the band.

Why I am a fan of Rush: I am a drummer and my older brother is a drummer. He turned me on to Rush in 1976-77. My best friend bought "A Farewell to Kings" and we consumed that album, and it OPENED MY THIRD EYE, right? As a drummer, an aspiring musician, a budding writer -- not to mention that I wanted to get on the same page with my older brother -- I was inspired by Rush, for their musicianship. THEN, I went to my first concert, Rush, in 1977! I was 14 and I saw Rush in a small, classic venue called Warner Theater. I was done, life and perspective changed forever! Yes, Rush brought me to a new level. So, that's how it happened.

Why am I a fan for 40+ years? They are the masters of their instruments. To blend music like they do in this song, La Villa Strangiato, Jacob’s Ladder, the entire 1st sides of 2112 and Hemispheres, Cygnus X-1, By-Tor, the Camera Eye, and on and on. They have no peers.

"Exit...Stage Left" was the live album name from this tour. Those long tubes are called chimes, bells, or tubular bells. Typically an orchestral instrument, but this was before the golden age of sampling, and Neil was a craftsman and dedicated musician, so he had them in his pit for this show.

I was 11, 5 miles away, totally oblivious to the miracle happening that night. Rush forever!

Thanks for asking Fabian! I love Rush because they are three normal guys who were determined to make their "next" show the best one yet for over 40 years! These guys helped me grow up in the '80's. You may or may not know that Neil is the lyricist and wrote several books. I have read three and "Ghost Rider" is worth a read for a positive life influence. Both Geddy and Alex are sons of Eastern European immigrant parents who grew up together, poor and restless in suburban Toronto. The more you listen and learn regarding this band, the more you will appreciate, and most likely enjoy! I did get to see them three times, later '80's, early '90's and in 2004 after they took time off for the tragic events in Neil's life. All three shows were just remarkable in how good they were and how they could connect so well with their audience.

Geddy's bottom neck is actually a 12 string. Alex has both 12 string and 6 string. Both play bass pedals at different times as well!

Made every concert in my area from 1984 to 2015 their retirement. They were creative , they were different and I could relate to their music like no other.

To me Rush is three men with an unbelievable amount of talent merging at the perfect point in time. It just unexplainably sounds good. Pink Floyd is the same way. It's enjoyable to hear.

The transitions in their songs are seamless, they change registers constantly. Three best friends, playing for decades. My older brother got me hooked when Fly by Night was released in the early/mid 70's. I've seen them 5 times in concert, every time they were flawless. They take their music very seriously and never let their success go their heads. They also stayed away from the big parties and hard drugs which ensured their infamy.

Watching Rush go to work was and is one of the great joys in my life, their music just always puts a smile on my face. 😊

I was fortunate enough to see them around 14 times. Never a bad show and the sound was always excellent! Xanadu is my favorite!

The "giant wind chimes" are called tubular bells. Geddys twin neck is unusual in that it's a bass on top and a 6 string guitar The reason they have such a full sound for a 3 piece is that both geddy and alex play synth and bass with their feet using key peddles which are laid out like a piano keyboard. The keyboard geddy is playing is a synthesizer, I'm sure you've heard of that. Progressive rock is exactly what it says....it progresses through different stages like a storyline. ✌❤🇬🇧

It’s actually a 12 string guitar. I also used to think it was a 6 string guitar, but recently I was corrected that it is a 12 string. There are 6 tuning pegs on the back side so it wasn’t obvious. I think Geddy talks about it in one of his books, but for sure he confirms it is actually a 12 string guitar.

Listening to Rush, they have been around since 1974. Introduced to me by a dearly departed friend, they have been a favorite of mine. Xanadu is a in concert favorite.

Three geniuses in one band! They took their music but not themselves seriously. Three down to earth guys that were/are the best of friends. Their goofy sense of humour. The reason I am a fan of the band is you have 3 guys who are just an amazing tour de force not only on record, but especially live. Once you see them live it changes everything. Kind of a bit of a "religious" experience. Rush was the greatest thing I had ever heard and now seen. They're a rare item. I love this band!

Here’s some fun trivia about the bass guitar player, Gedde Lee…. He said in a recent interview that his mom had such a strong accent that when she called him by his real name, Gary, it sounded like ‘Gedde’…somehow it stuck with him all these years…

Rush what a band, Neil here playing temple blocks, wind chimes and triangles everywhere, glockenspiel, bell tower and tubular bells. Plus writing lyrics . Geddy vocals, bass guitar, foot organ, synthesizer, bass and six string rhythm guitar. Alex the most underated guitarist ever. 5 man bands don't sound as full as Rush. Canada Rocks!!!!!!!!! I have seen them 9 times and 1st time at my high school Neil is arguably the best drummer ever only Keith and John come close.

Let's just start with there's NO other band that writes music anything like they do. All 3 standard bearers of what they do. I love their storytelling in both music and lyric. Genius level attention to details...on and on...simply the best rock band period.

In a way it's a bit like classical music where you have different movements and themes taking place all within a single piece of music. What I really liked about Rush is that they played everywhere when they went on tour. I grew up in a fairly remote part of Canada but still had the chance to see them play live multiple times and I am very grateful for it. If you are a musician you can appreciate them even more I think, because it's easier to understand how they can present some very technically complex material but still connect with the audience in a way that very few bands can. Neil Peart the drummer is considered by many in the pro music business as being the best drummer that ever was, R.I.P. Neil!

Exit stage left was the title for the live concert album. I believe it was recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto. Massey Hall is an opera theatre with amazing sound quality.

The guys in Rush were FEARLESS. After the mediocre reception their third album "Caress of Steel" got, their label called them to the US for a meeting in which they were threatened. The studio heads wanted short radio-ready songs. Their next album, 2112 featured the title song that took up the ENTIRE first side. Xanadu is on the next album, "A Farewell to Kings" and in this song, they have essentially 2 intro sections, each about 2 1/2 minutes, the length the studio wanted the entire to be. They would simply not be anything other than what they wanted to be. As a guy who played bass for a long time in my younger days, I was first drawn in by Geddy Lee's playing; he's amazing and does things I struggled to do on bass all while playing keyboards with foot pedals and singing- musically mind boggling. The more I listened, the more I realized that the level of talent Geddy shows is equalled by both Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart. The three are all virtuoso.

You asked if it was a movie theme song. It is the movie.

What I find amazing is, I actually saw this concert tour live in Chicago back in 81, you can tell how good of friends they are not just back then but even when you see their last tour videos that how close Geddy and Alex are as friends after all those years that's really rare

When I first heard Rush I was just learning to play drums and I heard Neil Peart and it gave me inspiration to keep playing.

Exit Stage Left was a live album of their Moving Pictures Tour in 1981 this song was recorded in 1977 off the A Farewell To Kings album which was RUSH's follow-up album to 2112 filmed in Montreal at the famous Montreal Forum the former home of the NHL Montreal Canadiens. I saw them on this tour in 81 at Maple Leaf Gardens in their home-town of Toronto, Ontario Canada. A three-piece band that makes sound and music that you would think would have a ton other musicians with them it is hard to explain why like them they have always been there and now they are gone after the passing of Neil at least he was there to get inducted to the RRHOF in 2013 over 40 years of making great music. The studio version is just as good but RUSH was always worth the price of your ticket you got your moneys worth they used to play almost every New Year's Eve at the Gardens here in Toronto in the 70s and early 80s, 24 gold and 14 platinum (3 multi-platinum) records in 40 years of making music so they must have done something right and it is because of a lady named Donna Halper who played their song Working Man (Neil was not with band at this point the drummer was John Rutsey who passed in 2008 ) in Cleveland when she was DJ there she was at the RRHOF induction with them they ( RUSH ) never forgot that and she has been invited to many events with band.

What I love about Rush first and foremost is that Rush's technically-challenging compositions are true works of art, and the sound that these three virtuoso artists created is unrivaled by any other trio. A close second is the poetic, deeply philosophical lyrics penned by Neil Peart. And, finally, the loyalty these guys showed each other in the over 40 years they made music together was reflected in the respect they showed to their fans and their audiences for whom they always performed beautifully. Their music was the soundtrack of my adulthood.

So you asked what drew us all into being a fan? I was 11yrs old listening to the music coming from my older brother's bedroom, and smelling something resonating something I was not familiar with. That album I heard was 2112.and even at the age of 11,I new this band was the music I that I wanted to listen to.i had my bands of choice already, they were Led zeppelin, black sabbath, and now this little known band out of Toronto Canada. I was hooked on Rush's music from that point,all the way until 2015 when they retired as a band, and sadly,Mr Peart passed away a few years later of brain cancer,that loss,hurt. Lyrically, the intelligence drew me to the songs, musically, it to me on a journey, some songs, including this one,could actually be a movie. Enjoy your journey into this bands music, I sure have,by the way,I was 11yrs old in 1977..this video I believe came out in 1981,and it was the first time we able to see these three incredible musicians play live unless you went to a concert. I did see them live 4times,to see them reproduce their music in a live setting was absolutely incredible. Concert chimes with several other percussion items attached to the frame. What captivates? Innovation and creativity. Instrument usage. I've been a fan for a long time. I saw them live in 1979 which sealed it. For me, there is a fine balance between the energy and the flow. This is not music that you can put on at work because you have to work at listening to it. And although I've heard many of their songs over and over, there is still a new surprise and while you're trying to work that out, the pace changes right where you now expect it and it surprises you all over again.

The drummer RIP was called the Professor by all of the other top drummers in the world, also wrote most of their songs, Getty Lee the Bassist and Singer is considered one of the top bassists in the business and Alex the guitar player has incredible creativity and finesse, with just 3 members they fill the air with the music of a full symphony orchestra unmatched in the industry.

I believe if it wasn’t for Neil Peart, Rush would Not have had the success They achieved in their 40 Years together. He Defines the very meaning Of Progressive Rock Drumming. Period. There was no other band Like them at the time, and Likely never will be Again… RIP Professor.

This is completely true as if John Rutsey had stayed their drummer Rush would be nothing more than a foot note in rock as Rutsey had no interest in progressive rock he wanted to be like Zeppelin and be a blues rock band, Gene Simon's put it best " when Rutsey was their drummer I nicknamed them mini-Zep but when Neil joined they became Rush as there was no other band like them that you could say they are like... they simply were Rush" and Geddy and John didn't really get along, John even fired Geddy from the band at one point until their bassist and their lead singer quit, and John was not the reader or philosopher that Niel was, will let's be honest not many people are as veraces readers as Niel was

We had an old tube record player in our basement and we would always play this album while we worked on puzzles. When the tubes were warming up and Xanadu would start, it sounded so incredibly mystical and haunting to me. The lyrics would always take me to another place. That’s the thing with early Rush, their music would accentuate the lyrics. They were all about setting a mood.

Mike Oldfield has an album with the name of that instrument, Tubular Bells. Some of it was used in the soundtrack for the Exorcist. An excellent album.

There music takes you on an emotional journey

Alex Lifeson - 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, pedal synthesizer, volume pedal; Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass guitar, 12 string guitar, bass pedal, taurus pedal, electric piano/synthesizer; Neil Peart - Lyrics, Drums, orchestra bells, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, timbales, timpani, gong, temple blocks, bell tree, triangle, and melodic cowbells. Based on Kubla Khan (Xanadu) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Coleridge composed his poem, ‘Kubla Khan’, in a state of semi-conscious trance either in the autumn of 1797 or the spring of 1798 and published in 1816. The whole poem is pervaded by an atmosphere of dream and remains in the form of a vision. The vision embodied in Kubla Khan was inspired by the perusal of the travel book, Purchas His Pilgrimage. Coleridge had taken a dose of opium as an anodyne, and his eyes closed upon the line in the book, “At Zanadu Kubla Khan built a pleasure palace.” But this opened his creative vision, and the poem of about 200 lines was composed in this state of waking dream. On being fully awake, he wrote the poem down. The theme of the poem is unimportant. It describes the palace built by Kubla Khan, the grandson of Chengis Khan, the great rule of central Asia.

Those are called either concert chimes or tubular bells. One of 8 percussion instruments he uses in this song.

Clearly some of the world's greatest rock musicians. Musically, lyrically. Pure power trio. Melody, pace, pure perfection auditory perfection. So many songs they wrote (Neal Peart a lot of the lyrics and music) had a story, had a picture. Working Man live has excellent changes throughout as well. How many musicians can work metronome, keyboard, synthesizer, double neck bass and sing....holy shit. My first listen was in 1974....and they've been banging my heart ever since....

Those tube things are called Tubular Bells. If you could see the whole thing, each one is a different length which gives off a different note when struck. There is actually a right and wrong way to strike them and he is doing it properly.

They are musician’s musicians. No one was better live. This particular piece blew me away on the Farewell to Kings album, but in my opinion, this is a better verion of this song. Alex, Geddy and Neil are experts in there instrucments. The bells behind Neil, the drummer, are "Tublular Bells”. Niel was also the band’s lyrisist. These guys wrote the book on key and time signature changes. Sadly, We lost the drummer, Neil Peart in 2020 to cancer. As a 45 year fan, this has always been my favorite of everything they wrote and performed. Thanks for video!

This helps enhance the value of the music as every bar supports the lyric and message. That's what makes Rush so unique. That complicated music is perfectly supporting the amazingly crafted lyrics. The whole package !!!!!

First and foremost the 3 members of Rush are each some of the greatest musicians in their respective instruments ( with Neil the drummer arguably the greatest percussionist of all time and definitely in the top 3 and Geddy the bassist/ vocalist/ keyboardist arguably in the top 3 or 4 best bassists of all time. Alex is no slouch of guitar either). 3 people perform all of the sounds you hear and they were incredible live and wouldn’t write a song that they couldn’t reproduce live. They relied on their music rather that theatrics during their shows. Beyond that, they did their own thing and didn’t write songs for popularity or conformity to the standard length for radio play ( not that they didn’t have some of these songs also). They didn’t write lyrics about girls or love, they were much deeper and about a lot of different things. The 3 members were best friends and lasted a long time together and only ended because playing to the caliber they played to was unsustainable at their age so they called it quits while still at the top of their game. And unfortunately Neil the drummer soon thereafter contracted cancer and after a few year battle passed away. The band had a ton of albums, a long career, didn’t sell out to the critics or music companies, but still had massive success due to constant touring and word of mouth, were masters of their craft and created some of the greatest music ever all while remaining humble and having integrity.

There is no better 3 piece band! They sound like a band with at least 5 or guys. These 3 musicians are true masters of each of their instruments. They are second to none!

"Time signatures", are the changes your hearing, the masters at it ! A band that has 3 but plays like 5 or 6. Pure professionals. Lyrics were mostly written by Neil P. . I could relate to alot of their lyrics "Subdivision " being one as well as "Working Man". Look into the South America tour " Live in Rio" iy will give you a perspective of how they impacted a nation. The Documentary of that tour is great and well worth getting and watching. Rush LIVE this is no other

FTW, The hype should start with their friendship. Alex and Ged been friends for 60+ yrs, best friends. When Neil (RIP) joined, they became a family. The Kings of the time signature changes and the Godfathers of Prog-rock. Fan since the early 70s, I think because they were so close their timing together is flawless. No wasted notes, always on time. Ridiculous master muscians that got their influence from all different types of music. Btw, they are pipe chimes. ✌

Part of the appeal of Rush is their uncompromising musicianship, and their undying loyalty to one another as friends. They are one of the hardest working bands in Rock. They recorded and toured non-stop from 1975 until 2004 before they took any time off. Then they continued up until 2013 and released their final album Clockwork Angels which was a fantastic finale for the legendary power trio.

It's great that you are getting more and more dialed in with Rush for their conceptual, epic songs. You are finding the vocabulary to express what the music and lyrics are provoking and suggesting. That's great, but just be careful, as a reactor, not to pause in the middle/during the guitar solo. With Rush, it's important to leave that space alone to be played out and then, when the solo is over, you can stop to talk about stuff. OK, if you want to experience more music from Rush like Xanadu, you should go on the "Cygnus X-1" journey! Cygnus X-1 is a song on the Farewell to Kings album, the same album that Xanadu is on, and it has two parts. Cygnus X-1, Book One is called "The Voyage". That's at the end of the album and it will freak you out. It's going to put you through changes, just fair warning. Then, the next album starts with "Book two" of the Cygnus journey, called "Hemispheres". Book Two takes The Voyage to the next level, literally! You have to hear those two songs back-to-back! AWESOME Prog Rock epic! Check it out!

Why have I been a fan for over 4 decades? Easy, its in the rules. When a band totally rules like Rush has for all these years you have to be a fan.

RUSH was a special band with a huge underground following. RUSH fans are also unique and generally more musically educated then regular rock fans. Clueless music reactor channels such as this one shouldn't try and react to bands like RUSH because they have no understanding of complicated and technical music and therefore their reactions are vague and dismissive. Another words, they don't recognize greatness when they hear it.

What captivates you ask my friend? Absolutely impeccable musicianship for one. Also lyrics that really make you think and take you on a journey through every song. Awesome live shows incredible Lights and really 3 very nice guys who really don't take themselves too seriously but yet at the same time were forever at the top of their game. Saw this tour in 81, Moving Pictures, still have the ticket stub and the shirt.
