You are so right! Also, I have heard that his mother was in the audience and this was the first live performance she had ever heard from her son. He was a little nervous too with her in the audience but was thrilled also and maybe that is why he seemed happy, plus he was knocking it out of the park. This is my husband of 55 years, and my song. He was away in South Korea for a year in the military, and this song became popular while he was gone that year and we both heard it and have claimed it as our song. When he got back, we played this song over and over and danced I got reacquainted. I had given birth to our first child while he was gone and he saw his daughter for the first time when she was about 6 months old. We were only 22 and 23. But this is still our song and we still are in crazy love with each other. 💕

All you want to do is make love after you hear it! LOL!. Bobby Hatfield is by far the most perfect singer I have ever heard. No wonder so many people love this song, the lyrics, the instruments, the arrangement and Bobby's voice. Still gives me goosebumps to this day! So happy this young generation appreciates it all!

bobby hatfield is one of the best counter tenors mostly because of such clarity between his low and high notes

They each did occasional solos. This is Bobby Hatfield. Bill Medley, who produced the studio recording of this, was offstage with the show's host Andy Williams. The record was a big hit in 1965 and again in 1990 when it was in the movie Ghost. The studio version is great, but this live version is far superior. There's a fun video you might want to check out that took place after this with Bobby, Bill and Andy doing a humorous version of Ray Charles's What'd I Say. Andy was a very popular singer whose career spanned from the late 30s until his death in 2012.

Oh my! I watched that Andy Williams show where this was sing by Bobby! It was so good! Andy Williams was so awed by his singing he couldn’t say a word. Plus they all say Whatd I Say together that was priceless. Another time Andy Williams got speechless! Lol

I was 15 yrs when I watched him sing this song on the Andy Williams show. This is Bobby's song. He nailed it. I'm 73 yrs old and never get tired listening to him sing this beautiful song. This is his song! RIP Bobby! Love you and miss your beautful hearing your beautiful voice! ❤❤❤

I'm a child of 66 as well, the magic was flowing.

This was the era where entertainers dressed properly, not in torn clothes. This was life, no autotunes, no flashing lights and smoke. Just God given talent. Bobby had a 6 octave range. His mother was in the audience and he was nervous. Literally, blue-eyed soul. Both had blue eyes. This was the era where the audience was quiet and respectful. You paid your money and you wanted to hear the singer sing. Then The Beatles hit the scene and all of that went down the tube. LOL! This song was recorded many times but it belongs to Bobby Hatfield. Nobody could sing it like him. You need to listen to "You'll Never Walk Along" and Bobby sing "Ebb Tide".

Bobby's version of summertime, my prayer, somewhere, from west side story. He would put his own "spin" on any song that he sang. Enjoy !!

We need more men like Justin, secure enough to admit that Bobby is one handsome fella. I'm a guy too and I'm jealous of that blue eyed soul brother as well. ;-)

There's a 5 minute and 22-second version of this video where the two brothers are interviewed by Andy Williams, and it sort of explains why only one is singing this song.

We need to add a shout out to Andy's show orchestra, they did a bang-up job of the accompaniment. I call these reactions being Bobbyed, male or female, we all just fall for him at the first whoa. And yes, he's dapper and smooth, but men were back then and audiences were quiet and respectful of the talent, we wanted to hear them - not stupid adolescent girls screaming and ruining it. All the little tricks and flicks to keep the audience interested, like acknowledging the applause at the start, the little questioning nod of the head "are you still mine"?, like he's having a conversation with you. Also, not falsetto, Bobby was a counter tenor, he could hit those sopranoish high notes without any strain. I wasn’t alive in this time. I have seen enough videos though to know back then y’all had no shortage of loud “not respectful” to the talent. Stupid adolescent girls screaming. I’m sure there’s a long list but Elvis and The Beetles are examples. Y’all had people fainting and needing medical attention. Lol

You two are delightful. Thanks for your appreciation of the greatest duo ever! I could tell you so much about Bobby. All his life, Bobby was a friend to all he met. No, I never met him, but I have been a fan since '63. This performance I never forgot. Bill is there. He lost the coin toss to see who would sing this song. Thank God that Bobby won. His performance was unbelievable. Live, no auto tune. Just Bobby and a mic, and a whole nation of women fell in love! I was one of them. Check out the 1965 Andy Williams show, where this was taped, with both Bill and Bobby and a funny chat with Andy, all 3 doing a very funny "Whatd' I Say".I have always called "Unchained Melody" "Bobby's Song." He made it his.

This song was sung for our troops in uniform, who served our country, many families, who had a family member, who served in the military, know the lonely heartache, of having a loved one serving our country and truly missing them and praying for their safe return home.

That “distinctive sound” you hear is called music. No electronic synthesizers, no auto tune, no fancy recording tricks. Just music done right!!

His range, his velvety voice, his looks of it attributed to what an amazing musician and Bobby Hatfield was. He was more than just a singer and I am so glad that they got inducted him into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame just months before he passed away and that he got that honor. Thank you for reviewing him.

Bobby Hatfield was one part of the Righteous Bothers and Bill Medley the other one of that twosome. Bobby sang this by himself I guess because this song didn't have two parts. Bobby "owns" this song no matter who ever sings it before or after him. No one ever or probably will be able to sing it better. Bobby was 25, (so was his partner Bill Medley) when he sang it in 1965, I was 15 and just so in love with Bobby, like about a million other young girls and women at that time. He and Bill had wonderful voices and didn't need any electronic help to make them sound better. Bobby died in November of 2003 and I think Bill is still alive. What wonderful voices they had, we miss them.

Your question of why was he singing this solo? My first thought is because this is as close to perfection as a singer on earth can accomplish. @@wvob6752 Bobby’s range was up to E6 … he was well within his ability here at G5 and had no need to use falsetto. He had full power and no air in the note, right to the end … which he probably would have extended if the music had not ended.

I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something write because we're still together. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on baby's when I was home. I served my Queen and Country for 38 years as a Royal Marine Commandos and Specialist Forces, and the last 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.

Even decades later Bill Medley( the singer with the deep voice) still sounded amazing. Check out I’ve had the time of my life from the movie dirty dancing. He sang with Jennifer warnes.

This was on the Andy Williams TV show. There was a high standard on television back then I’m 77 years old and I remember them being so awesome and my teenage years!

When Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley would record albums together, each of them would record one song singing solo. Both of them wanted to record "Unchained Melody". They flipped a coin to decide who would sing the song, and Bobby Hatfield won the coin toss. It has been stated, that when Hatfield would sing this song in concert, Medley would play the piano.

When Bobby Hatfield is about to sing "Unchained Melody", Williams and Medley leave the stage area, and then quickly return after the applause is over, and The Righteous Brothers and Andy Williams team up to sing a cover of the Ray Charles song, "What I'd Say".

@@has7459 that was a bit of stage play. This was written as a solo and, as someone else said, they flipped a coin to see who would sing it. The fact that it became a huge hit when it was just an album track was a surprise to both of them. Bill produced it, played piano on the original recording and actually sang on the back-up vocal although you can’t pick his voice out.

So there was an extended version of this out there, with an interview before he starts singing. Bobby does it alone because Bill says half jokingly, that he didn’t think it would be a hit. Perhaps to stop and it would interfere with the performers concentration. Ed Sullivan was the same the Animals; however they did scream and go crazy aster their name was announced.

It's hard to imagine how Bill Medly, as good a singer as he was at the time, could have added anything to improve Bobby Hatfield's rendition of this song.

If you weren't aware, Bobby's mother was in the audience, seeing her son perform for the first time ever. That was probably a big part of his motivation with this, flawless performance.

Bobby sang this by himself because it was designed to be a solo, which means only one person sings. This was normal as they each typically did one solo each per album. But while this was a solo for Bobby to sing, Bill Medley wasn't just goofing off; on the studio version, Medley played the piano. He later joked "if I knew this would become such a big hit, I would have brought in a better pianist!"

Thank you for mentioning the solo. I was going to comment on the same thing. It was agreed between the 2. Also, the polished look. If you came from that era, which I did, that's the way grooming was back then, not a hair out of place for both men and women and I remember our mother making us groom and wash up before going to the drive-in movies even though no one was going to see us sitting in the car. Personally, I like the natural look for hair that we have today and you can still be polished.

They had an agreement that on every album they had one solo each.

This took part in an Andy Williams show. Andy asked him to sing.

We all dressed up more back then. We didn’t go to concerts in jeans and the performers dressed up too. There was a sense of decorum. They each sang some solos.

Play "Ebb Tide" ... also sung solo by Bobby Hatfield. I promise, It will melt your heart ❤ I grew up listening to the Righteous Brothers. They were the heartthrob of every teenage girl.

Another good one is What I'd Say from the same show with both Bill and Bobby and the host of the show Andy williams.

This song is their song. It has been covered over 600 times

Singing the way it should be. 1965 no artificial helps. By the way “you’ve lost that loving feeling “ same brothers- most listened to song of the 20th century. You don’t need good a good voice today - just good electronics .

The “same brothers” weren’t actually related. This was Bobby Hatfield, the other “brother” is Bill Medley. Medley is still performing.

@@shellieeyre8758 I think the thing is, it's suspected that if we asked people to give us a top 5 list of singers today who can sing great without autotune, that they'd all pretty much come up with the same list of names. That would actually indicate that there are very few. I'm not saying this is what would happen, but I think it's suspected. "Back in the day," (a day after mine, but I lived through it) when we were inundated with all the young blondes, we kind of knew that Xtina was the only one who actually had chops, so this isn't necessarily new. Kind of like no one's worrying whether Ariana Grande can actually knock it out on the spot. Note: A capella acts don't count. That's like counting opera singers or barber shop quartets. Or like putting models on lists of the 100 sexiest women alive when being great looking is actually their job. Take care.

I was a 24 year old mother of two when Bobby sang this on the Andy Williams Show. No do overs, no post production adjustments. Just pure talent. His partner was humming low notes in the back ground. I hunger for music like this again.

On the studio recording, he did nearly inaudible background vocals and played piano. For this performance, only Bobby and the orchestra.

Both of them were there at this performance on the (live) Andy Williams Show and appeared together in matching suits for a short segment with the host where Bill Medley mentioned they periodically flipped a coin to see which of them would get to do a solo and this time Bobby Hatfield won. They were both 25 in 1965 and already consummate professionals. Along with his general tenor voice and 4+ octave range, Bobby also had very profound stage fright and would throw up before virtually every performance and then get himself together and go out on stage with Bill and make it look easy. These guys had nothing short of talent on loan from the gods. Another little tidbit...Bobby's mom was a guest of the show and she was sitting behind him in the group onstage. My favorite part is right at the end with that natural little smile and unpretentious lip bite. He knew he had just done killed it. 😊

If you listen to it with that perspective, it means so much more. Bobby Hatfield was amazing and it was live. No retakes and in 1975, limited recording options.

1965 - LIVE performance - no auto tune or other computer assist devices to enhance tone/vocal quality. Bobby didn't need it anyway. His 3-octave tenor range is superb with precise tone/pitch and voice control. Song has been covered several times since but Bobby owns this. The story goes that they, Bill and Bobby, decided to cover this song but didn't know which one should sing it because the song was written for solo performance. So, they did a coin toss and Bobby won. He did experience stage fright but you wouldn't know it. Also, his mom was in the audience and it was her first time to hear her son performing live. Believe me, back in the day, those of us gals who watched this on our home tv just melted and imagined we were being swooned. We were mesmerized.

In a longer version of this video, Bill Medley is on stage with Bobby just before this performance and, when asked why he doesn't sing on this song, he joked "I didn't think it was going to be a hit." This song is actually a cover and many artists recorded it before the Righteous Brothers but everyone agrees that this song is theirs.

When the Righteous Brothers got this it's been theirs, well more Bobby Hatfield's; his version is the standard that many are compared to. Both Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley had songs in US Films, Bobby's unchained Medley appeared in Ghost with Demi Moore Whoopi Goldberg, and Patrick Swayze and Bill Medley's sang Time of my life with Jennifer Warnes, Starring Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey and Cynthia Rhodes ( hell of a soundtrack ) ; Their song you lost that loving feeling is in the movie Top Gun with Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. Basic history: from Wikipedia: They began performing together in 1962 in the Los Angeles area as part of a five-member group called the Paramours . However, the Paramours did not have much success and soon broke up, leaving Hatfield and Medley to perform as a duo in 1963. According to Medley, they then adopted the name The Righteous Brothers for the duo because black Marines from the El Toro Marine base started calling them "righteous brothers". At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!", and would greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?" on meeting them. This song was a solo by Bobby Hatfield. Live in concert in Anaheim - his family was in the crowded auditorium. He was born in Anaheim and played professional baseball for a year for the Anaheim Angels before switching to singing full time. He died in 1973 of pneumonia while touring in Minnesota.

The song is called unchained, it was written for a movie in 1955 about a man who was going to prison, he was writing to his girlfriend asking for her to wait for him to be released from prison.

This song was written for a 1930's prison movie. The man is hoping once he's released his lover will be waiting for him. Hence the title Unchained Melody. Bobby Hatfiled was singing live on the Andy Williams show while his singing partner Bill Medley was off stage listening. His parents were in the audience and Bobby was suffering with a terrible head cold. He still nailed it!

I've read that Bobby was so nervous with stage fright before this legendary performance that he threw up just minutes before going on stage. You would never know it by watching him perform that night.

he was also suffering the aftermath of a head cold, I think you can hear a slight rasp in a couple of places, and he's looking at bit sweaty towards the end under the pancake make-up! But still outstanding and then he did a comedy routine with Bill and Andy, dancing and joking straight after that tour-de-force, what a trouper! Many have tried, even Presley, but none have bettered this.

This wonderful song was made by Bobby Hatfield before the Rhighteous Brothers became a duo . I am a lady from their time and they are a favorite. I think our music from the 50's 60's was the absolute greatest, best pop, soul, all of it. Thank you for doing this I will be watching more! Rita.

The two of them also recorded separately but no matter which one was singing, , they were always billed as "The Righteous Brothers". This performance was on a TV variety show called "The Andy Williams Show". If Bobby seems a bit nervous, he was--- his mother was in the audience.

That’s the way they did it back then. No tricks, just raw talent. Bobby was smiling because his parents were in the audience. His pink suit is because the is was the Valentine’s Day edition of the Andy Williams show.

You've lost that Loving Feeling was actually the most played song of the 20th century

Back in '65 this was tune heard sunday morning radio station in Vietnam. I sent a cassette of this song to my girlfriend so she wouldn't forget about me but after my 3rd tour i couldn't give a shit

After he sings th last note he gets a little grin on his face , knowing he nailed it for his mom who was in the audience that night....

The question came up about why they both weren't singing. I watched this performance in 1965. This was a live performance on the Andy Williams show. Both brothers were there and sang a song before this one. Andy asked Bill why he wasn't singing on this song, Bill commented that he didn't think it would be a hit. Bill had a great sense of humor.

This was recorded while the Righteous Brothers were preforming on the Andy Williams TV special. Both of the brothers were there singing but this song was one that Bobby always sang alone. Bill also had songs that he sang by himself. They were al;ways the best of the best.

Went to see the Righteous Brothers in Kalamazoo, Mi a number of years ago and was so looking forward to it. As we were waiting for the doors to open they announced the concert was cancel. They finally came out to say the Bobby Hatfield had died in his hotel room. Too much talent to be taken away too soon!

Wow!

I hear they flipped a coin to see who would sing the solo, since they both wanted to. Bobby won. There's a Bobby Memorial that Bill Medley did later, singing his own solo in Bobby's honor. A beautiful job, in his own range & also very nice. But this was Bobby's song for all time. love them both.

This was live television and he nailed it, WITH his folks in the audience for this performance.

So glad to see other people enjoy this so much, even these days. I'm only in my thirties but I grew up on this music and I've loved this song as long as I can remember having been aware of music. This man had a head cold here and he still knocked it out the dang park. Chills every time. Great reaction!

The guys were on the Andy Williams Show. His partner is there. Bobby always sung this solo - agreement between the two. Iconic song. You can find the show and see / hear them both.

This was Valentines Day on the Andy Williams show. His Mom was in the audience, he was nervous. He and Bill Medley flipped a coin for this song. Bobby will own it forever.
