There is evidence of this. Jay Z himself said that Eminem beat him. The funny thing here is that the original song is Eminem and Royce's 5'9" and I understand that Eminem gave it to Jay Z. The joke isn't over yet. Eminem didn't change his verses. Jay Z listened to Eminem's verses and still couldn't beat him.

If you pay attention to the verse structure in em’s verses vs jays you can start to understand why em raps at the level he does. He rhymes with technicality and he’s extremely intelligent. His vocabulary is massive and he can make anything rhyme. He’s verses are like percussion because he works on syllable structure to flow. It’s genius really.

Reading the lyrics gave me new found respect for how Hov attacked this song. Also it’s important to go back and put the Em feature in its proper context. Em was the biggest artist in the world and was smashing everything in his way. For Jay to even take this on, put ‘Em on his album, deserves respect. Having said that, as a Nas fan: Eminem still killed J on his own sh^t.

When Eminem was coming up, he was probably the most controversial mainstream artist period- before social media. He was always a step ahead and knew how to hit and what the response would be and would always pre-empt it and literally exhausted his critics while the crowd went wild and his fan base grew. He was the antagonist and the equalizer and the “TRL generation” loved it while every adult hated it. He knew this and made his “butter” off the hatred with a big smile .

That first verse is Em’s greatest of all time imo. That 2nd verse is top 5 for him and the last 6 or 7 bars might the greatest wordplay of all time in hip hop history. No rapper in their prime that has ever existed would be able to go bar for bar after getting sent that. Not Kendrick, Nas, nobody. Jay was a real one by not backing down and putting that shit on his album

When Eminem came out he was viewed as a negative influence because he was spitting some facts about his life, and I do believe exposing the life of his culture and where he came from. Since he wasn't portraying what the media wanted him to this record was a testament to how he felt. Listen to "I Am Whatever You Say I Am" By Eminem and it will explain a lot.

In the song, both rappers address their critics directly. Eminem's verses touch on his often controversial lyrical content and its impact on his listeners, arguing that parents and critics should be more concerned with their own roles rather than blaming him for society's problems. Jay-Z's verses, on the other hand, tackle the critique that he glorifies a lifestyle of crime. He argues that his lyrics simply reflect the harsh realities of the environment where he grew up, and he's just a product of that environment.

Man this whole album is a monster but this track is so unique. The beat is anthem heavy and J murders the intro. The transitions between him and Em is nuts. Then they both just slap bar after bar on this thing in their own way. The chorus is so different from the others on the whole record. Good shit through and through.

one of the verses you were stuck at was masterclass, in the 2nd verse Eminem is reflecting on his role as a prominent rapper and the influence he has on young listeners. He acknowledges that he is not a politician, but he recognizes the power he holds to connect with and impact the younger generation. When Eminem says, "They call me a menace and if the shoe fits, I'll wear it," he is referring to the criticism and controversy he has faced throughout his career. He is willing to accept the label of being a troublemaker or controversial figure if it accurately describes his impact. However, he also suggests that if the shoe doesn't fit, meaning if the criticism is unjust or exaggerated, then people should accept the truth he presents in his music rather than ignoring or dismissing it. He challenges the listeners to face the reality he presents, even if it may be uncomfortable or goes against prevailing opinions. The following lines where Eminem asks, "Now who's the king of these rude, ludicrous, lucrative lyrics? Who could inherit the title, put the youth in hysterics?" show his confidence in his lyrical abilities and the impact he has on the younger generation. He uses his music as a platform to share his views and experiences, aiming to provoke thought and stir emotions. However, Eminem acknowledges that there is a significant interference or opposition trying to silence or discourage people from listening to his music. The last line, "they're saying you shouldn't hear it," implies that there are forces attempting to censor or discourage the audience from engaging with his content.
