A grooving song. "Get Ready" is a Motown song written by Smokey Robinson, which resulted in two hit records for the label: a U.S. No. 29 version by The Temptations in 1966, and a U.S. No. 4 version by Rare Earth in 1970

Smokey Robinson is a God of songwriting.. Amazing but, The Temptations original version compared to that of Rare Earth is not good. Rare Earth had tha amazing vocal and groove that just worked.. Right singer for the right song. Smokey really wrote a classic and Rivera sang and made it a classic
The original version of this was written by Smokey Robinson. The 1966 version was recorded by The Temptations for Motown. Rare Earth recorded this version in 1970. The lead vocalist here also plays the drums in the band.

Rare Earth made this song there own best version in my opinion
The original was done by the Temptations The lead singer on this cover is also the drummer and on the album the song is almost 20 minutes long with all the band members doing solos with their instruments!!!

Rare Earth's tackling of an already "Classic for the Ages" (only 3 years later) was ambitious to say the least. To me, both versions stand on their own. It's rare (no pun :-) that a cover version, in many ways, 'mimics' the original. Get Ready is a Temptations All Time classic that Rare Earth faithfully, respectfully, atmospherically and proudly put their own 'stamp' on. A well deserved Classic in its own right. That was an amazing reaction Asia & BJ. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Cheers, RNB
Back in the 70's, we played the extended (album) version at parties almost on a loop! Danced til we dropped!!!

Rare Earth did another Temptations remake-a psychedelic rock version of I Know I'm Losing You-check out the album version. Other Rare Earth hits include I Just want To Celebrate, Hey Big Brother, Born To Wander-incidentally the album cut of Get Ready is over 20 minutes long. You'll need to check out the album versions of their songs as their singles were heavily edited.

Rare Earth covered this song from the Temptations, who recorded it in 1966 for Motown. The long version of this song better highlights the group's musicianship. Another Temptations song that they cover is (I know) I'm losing you. The group is also from Detroit which, to me, helps give rise to that funk, rock and soul sound. They were the first Caucasian group signed by Motown and eventually given their own label.
You guys should check out the 17 min. version, it was the whole side of the album. Rare Earth was the first "white band" to sign with Motown. And another fact is that the drummer is the lead vocalist.

Hey there Asia & BJ, If I'm not mistaken & my memory doesn't fail me, Rare Earth was the 1st Rock Band signed by the Motown Label...Their Drummer was the lead singer too!!! And yes Asia, these brothers got some "SOUL!!!" It's too bad you didn't react to their "live" video of this performance because it allows you to see them getting down & I believe it is also an extended version!!! Nevertheless, check out & react to "I Just Want To Celebrate" and "I'm Losing You" by Rare Earth and you'll understand why Motown signed them!!!
Temptations did it first, but you have got to do the long version by Rare Earth, all the Instruments take a solo.
This was one of my mom's "house party" albums in the early 70s along with a couple of Booker T. and the MGs albums and, one of my favorites as a kid, "Struttin'" with The Meters. I highly suggest a follow-up, in fact, with both bands.

I saw Rare Earth perform this song live (in 1970 in Madison Square Garden) when they, and Gladys Knight and the Pips, opened for Sly and the Family Stone!!! 15,000 New Yorkers got down for the entire concert especially for Sly!!! My first concert at 13 yo and I was hooked. The 60 yo old ushers who normally worked at basketball games were dancing in the aisles harder than the 18 yo old hippies!!!!
It was such a pleasure to see you two enjoy this masterpiece !! I feel like I won the trifecta when I recommended this song on the live and it made the poll, won the poll and than you guys loved it ! Awesome reaction Asia and BJ and thanks for all the livestreams as they are so much fun !,

The temptations did get ready frist... Smokey Robinson wrote the song then. Rearearth did it 2years later after the temps... I love them both but know one can sing it like temps Eddie Kendricks
Written by Smokey Robinson, “Get Ready” was first a hit for the Temptations, in 1966. Rare Earth, who were then known in and around Detroit as the Sunliners, added the song to their concert setlist that same year.
Pete Rivera was on lead vocals and drums, Ray Monette on guitar, Mark Olsson on keyboards, Gil Bridges on saxophone, Eddie Guzman on congas and John Parrish on bass.
rare earth released it in september 1969. i was in high school when it came out. there is a longer version of this song by them. about 20 minutes long.
This is a temptations cover they worked for Motown also and the drummer is the lead singer.
I saw this band live in 1975 at Tri Cities Raceways in Richland, Washington. A band called The Stories (Their biggest hit is titled "Brother Louis") opened for them. Rare Earth started the concert with the tune "Big Brother", but it was an extended version with a very long "lead in" of heavy percussion. I counted four different sets of drums/percussion including the lead singer that played a stand-up snare. It was mind blowing. Jaw dropping good and the most memorable aspect about them was their percussion section. Of course, they played "Get Ready" during the show as well. My favorite tune by this band is "Born to Wander". Another great tune by Rare Earth is "Tobacco Road", but it doesn't top Edgar Winter's version.
Thanks so much for reacting to this song! One of my wife and I first dates was in 72 at a Rare Earth concert in college. A great show! You guys are my favorites to watch for reaction videos...luv you!

Love Rare Earth Yes I am old😜 Glad to see you react
A very fascinating fact about this band is that when Motown records were thinking about branching out into rock n roll they specifically made that branch of the label for this band
Amazing band & the lead singer is the drummer! 🥁 amazing song and vocals! Love your channel! ❤👏🏻👏🏻
My favorite band back in those days and I do still listen. I'll never forget hearing the 20 minute version for the first time at that high school party! But don't stop here - you gotta hear their "I Know I'm Losing You!" This band always rocked with soul, they were always underrated, and regretfully under-represented by Motown. But they laid down plenty of tracks for us to still enjoy. And Pete Rivera is still around folks - I ead his bio just last year!
‘Get Ready’ is a Motown song written by Smokey Robinson for the Temptations covered by Rare Earth
This was written by Smokey Robinson in 1965 for the Temptations who sang it in 1966. He wrote many hits while at Motown.
I was lucky enough to see this band live in 1972! They were great! Best drummer lead singer ever!
The original version of Get Ready by The Temptations came out in 1966. If you were a band playing high school dances in the '60s, You HAD to know Get Ready. As soon as the first notes of Get Ready were played, everybody was jumping out of their seats and surging onto the dance floor. Yes, I'm old enough to have lived through those times. The music of my youth was the greatest.
Excellent reaction!!! Such a great, groovy song!!! Rare Earth is a very Soulful, Rock Band. Drive into more of their hits. You won't be disappointed!!!
Rare Earth was a “rock” band on the Motown label in the late 60’s/ early 70’s. They specialized in amped up rock versions of Motown classics.
One of my favorite songs from Rare Earth is. "I just want to Celebrate" a fantastic song.
Great tune! My uncle was the conga player, Eddie Guzman, he was always a kick to hang with and a great goofball guy, all his relatives miss him dearly!
Young people for some reason weren't raised on Motown artists, mind blowing to me. I was raised on listening to Motown, introduced my son to it but his girlfriend had no idea what I was talking about!
1970,-the year I graduated from HS and bought such great music albums like Rare Earth, Crow, Led Zep2; Emerson Lake Palmer, Creedence,
The singer is also the drummer. His name was Peter Rivera. He has an incredible speaking voice too. I think he was originally from Detroit. They were such a great band in the 60s.
Rare Earth re-recorded both Get Ready by the Temptations and I'm Losing You (Your Love is Fading) by the Temptations along with Rod Stewart and Small Faces who re-recorded the Temptations I'm Losing You (Your Love is Fading). All versions are worth the listen.
They did many covers and rocked them! They made many covers into long rock versions!
These Boys ARE FROM DETROIT my Hometown!! They Have that Motown Groove throughout The LP’s, Give Them A Listen!!!
Get Ready is one of many great songs written for MOTOWN artists by Smokey Robinson. Smokey also had his own string of hits.
Finally found Rare Earth-In Concert on cd. Had the album for years. Great LP. Pete is so cool. Even now, still playing.
Original was The Four Tops. Rare Earth got their own subsidiary label named Rare Earth from the same label, Motown. The version you played was edited for AM radio. On the album it occupies an entire side, lots of solos. RE has many other hits. Remember: All Musical Roads Lead To Michigan! Lol
MUST HEAR CLASSICS,, Argent "Hold Your Head Up" Free "All Right Now" Head East "Never Been Any Reason" Vanilla Fudge "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
Explore more of Rare Earth! You will enjoy for sure👍👍
I seen them twice in the early 1970s. The second time me and my friend ran down and stood in the front row. I had a crush on that sax player.
Smokey Robinson wrote the song, love Smokey, but these boys did it justice. Written by Smokey Robinson, “Get Ready” was first a hit for the Temptations, in 1966. Rare Earth, who were then known in and around Detroit as the Sunliners, added the song to their concert setlist that same year.
Yes, Rare Earth is the original band for the song Get Ready.
Great song i remember listening to this in the mid 60's. It was the original by the Tempts at the time. I was working at the Village in NYC at the time. We were partying regularly. Fun times, wish i was there again. Thanks i enjoy your reviews and your musical choices.
Their label gave their own label, too! Sounds Live, but it's really a Studio Recording with a Audience Overdub.
No it's a cover of The Temptations hit. Keeps that Motown sound and a great cover at that. Sax reminiscent of Motown breaks. Rare Earth was the first white band signed to Motown.
Soul, Rock, Funk, ya that fits. It is a hybrid genre all their own.
One of the great Blue Eyed Soul Bands of the late 60's! RARE EARTH!
Rare Earth was one of my all time favorites. Saw them in Hartford CT. at an outdoor festival.
Proof that in the era of classic pop radio, rock n' roll and soul frequently intersected. We had one soul group after another (which eventually evolved into very polished romantic soul (such as Roberta Flack, Barry White, Rose Royce, Billy Paul) or a listener could groove with urban soul (Wilson Picket, Chacka Khan, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave). And of course there's MOTOWN. White rock bands like Rare Earth jumped headlong into the middle of the feast!
This is also a cover of The Temptations song in 1966. Both The Temptations and Rare Earth were both with Motown Records. By the way Rare Earth is a White Band. The funny thing is Rare Earth version charted higher. They did another Temptations' song called "(I know) I'm Losing You". "Get ready" peaked at #4 on Billboards Hot 100. Motown decided to rename the label that had White Bands. The guys in the band suggested that if your renaming the Label why not call it Rare Earth and that became the Labels name. Peter Hoorelbeke (also known as Peter Rivers was lead singer and Drummer). Thank you for your Reaction to this song, Asia and BJ.
This song,,was one of the soundtrack to our lives songs . Also,, this album, was the first album, on an ad to get it for 1 cent. Long story,, if nobody my age is reading, I'll just sound crazy,, or crazier.
Rare Earth was on the Motown label then and got the ok to re record this song because of the great job they did on it.
Rare Earth was the first white musical act signed by Motown. Will always be one of my favorites.
This is a cover, they were also signed to mo town
Love this song. I purchased the LP when is was first released. This song was 21+ minutes long and was the whole reverse side of the LP. It had exteneded instrumentals and drums.

Seeing Rare Earth was the first independent show I ever saw. They had some no-name, at the time, band open for them, and that band was and always bragged and boasted about being from Texas. A new band to the arena...they turned out doin pretty well for themselves and maybe you’ve heard of them,-from the great state of Texas, a new greatest band, Z.Z.Top. Top was a warmup...not for long!

Similar situation for me, except the opening band was a little better known at the time. Loved Rare Earth, but have to admit, The Doobie Brothers nearly stole the show. What a FANTASTIC concert!
GREAT old school jam! Always loved it! 💖
Wife here..HAVE LOVED THIS JAM ALL my LIFE!!!...Asia.., I always thought the lead singer had a very soulful voice as well..Rocking and Funky =FIRE!!.."Rocking Motown Song".Perfectly stated you guys!!
The Temps were first on this one. Rare Earth did a banging cover.
My mama drove my dad crazy with this party album. Classic Rock. They give every band member a solo time in the long. version.
Asia, the Temptations did this Smokey Robinson tune in 1966 and it got to #29 on the charts but, the Rare Earth version in 1970 made it to #4.....pretty cool history on this one.
Every time I'm getting ready to go out, this song comes into my mind. I used to sing to my daughter to get her up and out to school.
Asia and BJ? Only because I enjoy your sincerity when reacting to my era's music (60'-90'), will I share this music history with you. Motown, as you know, was a factory for music- mostly soul of course. but they had some great compositions, that believe it or not, contributed to the 60's 'psychedelic movement (Ball Of Confusion, Psychedelic Shack). They had an unbelievable staff of writers who put out an amazing amount of material, many times, recorded by multiple artists, which is the case with this song. Smokey Robinson, co-founder of Motown, was a prolific writer, as evidenced by this classic you're listening to right now. He fronted his own group, The Miracles. They did not record this song even though Smokey wrote it. The legendary group Temptations released this in 1966, and it was a very big hit, then in 1969, this Motown group Rare Earth released it also, and it smoked the charts. Interesting note on this band- unlike the great vocal groups at Motown, such as the Temptations, Rare Earth was a complete band, as you hear here. The drummer, (Pete Rivera) is the powerful soulful voice,, if you can believe that. In 1974 in LA, there was an all day/evening concert called Cal Jam I (there was a second in 1978). My buddies and I drove down from Las Vegas to attend. We had to park a mile away, and as we were walking towards the venue, (Motor Speedway- two hundred and fifty thousand in attendance) the first band came on, (9a) it was Rare Earth, and this commanding vocal and drums, could be heard from a half a mile away, playing this song.
Guys, back in the day we had a LOT of rock/funk/soul music. Sly & the Family Stone, Santana, lots of bands made records that weren't easy to label.
Rare Earth, from Detroit was the first rock band, incidentally all white to be signed to Motown Records. That's how they had access to all of those great Motown writers and producers - including Holland-Dozier-Holland, Smokey Robinson and the Motown catalogue...
A very good and true cover of the Temptations hit from '66(?). Rare Earth did the song justice. They were unrecognized and under-appreciated.
Asia & BJ - Rare Earth was the first white act signed to Motown Records. I THINK this was their first record on Motown.
On their In Concert double album the cut is 23 minutes but was cut down from a live performance of over an hour. And Rare Earth was the first successful white Motown group.

Originally the Temptations & Rare Earth was on the Motown Label. Check out their version of I Know I'm Losing You also by the Temps but their signature song is I Just want to Celebrate.
Check out "I Just Want to Celebrate" and "Hey Big Brother". The horns and the vocals! Underrated band. Check them out live.
There's a live version of this song. It's the bomb because it's rare to see a drummer singing.
Drummer/ singer is a friend 😎

This is the radio edit. The official full version is over 20 minutes long. The only white band on the Motown label for a long time. Born to Wander, and I Just Want To Celebrate are 2 more great ones. Look for the full versions..
This group was recruited by Motown and cover Smokey Robinson wrote the song, and The Temptations perform the original song from Motown. And Rare Earth cover it. The song went into the top ten on the Billboard charts. Y'all should go down this Rabbit 🐇 Hole ⛳ and check out, "I Just Want To Celebrate," by Rare Earth. It's FIRE 🔥🔥🔥
First white band ever signed by Barry Gordy Motown, covered a ton of motown songs, smokey wrote this one..
Asia ,BJ. There is a double album where one whole side is Getting Ready. Like 31 minutes. Please check it out. Horns ,etc. Plus the lead singer is the drummer.
It's an old Motown tune. The drummer is the singer Pete Revara
I just stumbled upon this..I didnt know you guys knew about rare earth..most people nowadays never heard of it. I use to hear it on the radio alot back in 1970.
I am 73 and i was just out of high school playing in a rock band when this came out on the radio. It was a well liked hit for Rare Earth. The singer was amazing and loved the Sax. Yes the Temptations did it, I was thinking The Four Tops too. I can just see the 4 Tops doing their dance steps and singing this. Ok, cool memories.
I saw them at IU in Nov1970, they were awesome I got right in front of the stage..
This is a cover of the 1966 Motown classic by "The Temptations." Rare Earth's cover in 1970, is an excellent version, because they stayed true to The Temptations original. I'll always take the Motown original, but this is a very close second.
More Blue Eyed Soul!!! This band was HOT on black stations and people were shocked to find out they were white. "I just want to celebrate" was another big hit of theirs. This is a cover--Smokey Robinson wrote this song for the Temptations, and their version was pretty good. Rare Earth got famous for playing it live, and this hit was born. In fact, this band was known for doing funky rock covers of Motown hits--their version of I'm Losing You was a hit too. I'm sure others have mentioned they were the first white band signed to the Motown label.
