That tube is called a golden throat and Frampton is the master of it. That’s how he can make his guitar talk and make all those cool sounds
It does in fact go through the guitar...the talk box works by sending the sounds played on the guitar through the tube into the performers mouth where he articulates the guitar sounds with his mouth and that is picked up by the normal microphone that he sings in. He doesn't actually sing, he uses the sounds of the guitar as his vocal cords.
An absolutely great Frampton song. Frampton used a talk box here The 70's we're such a great decade for music

From wiki.....The “talk box” is a unique effect that allows you to modify an audio signal - most commonly a guitar sound - using the player’s mouth as a filter to shape the sound. The talk box itself consists of a box, in which a speaker (often a compression driver) feeds into a plastic tube. The speaker connects to the speaker output on the instrument (guitar) amplifier, and reproduces the audio signal from the instrument. The player places the other end of the tube in his or her mouth. Sound flows through the plastic tube and the player uses their mouth as a filter to shape the sound. Different vowel sounds can be produced with the guitar signal as the “carrier” or audible part of the signal, or complete words can be “sung” using the guitar signal. Words and sounds only need be formed with the mouth, they don’t need to be spoken aloud, in order to modify the sound from the speaker. Since the actual SPL of the sound out of the plastic tube is fairly low, a microphone is usually placed in front of the musician to capture the sound. Popular songs using the talk box prominently include Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way” and Peter Frampton’s “Do You Feel Like We Do.”

This Frampton album ruled the charts back in the day.
Great tune of the 70's, takes me back to the days of crusin' the strip in San Leandro and Hayward CA in my 1972 Datsun 240Z with friends sittin' in the back with the hatch open and yellin' at everybody else in a good way though. Just chillin' on a hot summer night with all the other high school kids in their cool cars, every now and then a good race from a red light between two hot cars. Fun times! Too bad kids today don't have that opportunity, gas back then was around a 1.00 or less per gallon!

Joe Walsh used it in his Rocky Mountain Way. The voice box is bending or shaping the final sound of the guitar note
Released on January 6, 1976, Frampton Comes Alive! debuted on the charts at 191. It reached number one on the Billboard 200 the week ending April 10, 1976, eventually spending a total of 10 non-consecutive weeks in the top spot through October. He does use the talk box through the guitar, also he is British.I was fortunate enough to see him in 1999 in Chattanooga TN at a music festival,he put on a great show!

The voice box is a combination of his voice and guitar used simultaneously, with the guitar playing the same notes he's singing. Genius technology for the time!
There are at least two live videos of Peter performing this song in the 70s... watching Peter on stage lifts the whole experience of his music!
Frampton used a Heil talk box. The guitar goes into, usually, an amp head and it drives a driver, or speaker in the talk box . Then the sound travels up a tube into his mouth and the sound can be shaped, then thesoundispicked up with the microphone. Nowadays there are similar units that don't need a separate amplifier.

Same for Lines on My Face
Yes, it is called a voice box. The tone and the sound come from the guitar and the voice box and yes they are connected So the tone has to do with the guitar playing and the Wawa sounds are from his mouth opening and closing. Just remember, no sound is coming out of his actual mouth. He’s only opening and closing it and the tones are coming from the guitar. Maybe that will help you understand
God I love this song
It starts at the guitar..goes through the talk box ( it amplifies the guitar signal though a speaker driver that blasts the sound through a tube into your mouth..your vocal mic sends it through the P.A. He shapes the sounds with the mouth. Watch Rufus perform "Tell Me Something Good" on The Midnight Special to see exactly how it works! OK all that aside...this is how good 'ol Rock & Roll is supposed to sound. The band is firing on all cylinders here! Everyones in the pocket laying it down! While Peter Frampton soars. It just warms the soul while putting a smile on your face. What a moment in time . I wish I could go back!
This live album is an absolute masterpiece. A must have back in the 70’s.
Great song and probably one of the best live albums ever released, I remember seeing him in 1976, it was an all day concert in Philadelphia and Frampton played right before YES at the end of the evening
Yes, he IS one of the GOATs! Y'all reacted to Frampton's "Do You Feel Like We Do" way back, and he used the talk box then too! Peter is one of my all-time favorite artists! Thank you for a great reaction choice! ✌💙✌
Peter's life long dream was to play with an Orchestra! He did that in 2005? At Riverbend in Cincinnati! I was there! He had a bald head!!! It was GREAT!!!!! Great reaction! He also still played the mouth tube there!
It's the opposite. The sound of the guitar is funneled through the tube, so that when he holds the end in the mouth, his movements mold the sound as it comes out of his mouth. So in a way, he's using the sound of the guitar instead of his voice, and moving it through his mouth the way he would if he were really singing.
Asia and BJ, that’s called a talk box, you plug the guitar into it, the guitar travels up the tube, the tube is attached to his microphone, and he plays the notes on the guitar, and moves his mouth to shape the guitar notes.
Saw Frampton live in 1977 opening for KISS with Cheap Trick!! Omg!! Frampton was so good I went out & bought Frampton Comes Alive .. Iconic & legendary!! And, he’s so cute!! 🥰 ❤️
The guitar sound coming out of an amplifier is funneled through the tube into his mouth. So now the guitar sound is coming out of his mouth into the microphone. He can shape the sound by moving his mouth like he's singing or talking. It's awesome isn't it? ☺✌💛, PJ

One of the best live albums of all time…it was definitely HIS greatest album of his career Jeff Beck invented the “squawk-box” but said Peter Frampton did a pretty good job with it lol
Peter Frampton's talk box A talk box is an effects unit that allows musicians to modify the sound of a musical instrument by shaping the frequency content of the sound and to apply speech sounds (in the same way as singing) onto the sounds of the instrument. Typically, a talk box directs sound from the instrument into the musician's mouth by means of a plastic tube adjacent to a vocal microphone. The musician controls the modification of the instrument's sound by changing the shape of the mouth, "vocalizing" the instrument's output into a microphone.
Simple description: the guitar sound comes through the tube into his mouth, then from his mouth to the microphone he's singing into. The guitar creates vibrations the same way that vocal cords do, and the mouth shape modifies the vibrations the same way as it does when singing or speaking.
The sound comes from his guitar through the pipe into his mouth where he can manipulate them into the mic. Crazy inventive
Great reaction! Peter Frampton is a treasure.
It’s a talk box it lets you modify the sound of an instrument.
A talk box (also spelled talkbox and talk-box) is an effects unit that allows musicians to modify the sound of a musical instrument by shaping the frequency content of the sound and to apply speech sounds (in the same way as singing) onto the sounds of the instrument. Typically, a talk box directs sound from the instrument into the musician's mouth by means of a plastic tube adjacent to a vocal microphone. The musician controls the modification of the instrument's sound by changing the shape of the mouth, "vocalizing" the instrument's output into a microphone.
Okay, here it is easily explained... Sound goes from artists guitar (or whatever instrument) to an amplifier. Then, instead of the sound going to the normal speakers attached to the amplifier, the sound goes from that amp to a tiny but powerful speaker attached to one end of a hose. The sound then goes up that hose and into the artists mouth. Then the sound waves that come out of the hose and into the mouth of the artist are reshaped into whatever sound by the artist shaping their mouth in different ways in order to achieve different sounds. The resulting sounds then are picked up on a microphone near the artist's mouth. Perhaps, when you were a child, you leaned your cheek, or the back of your head maybe, up against the washer or dryer or some other vibrating appliance. While you did you likely noticed that if you hummed or made other noises while shaping and reshaping your mouth cavity that the resulting sound that reached your ears and/or left your mouth would change as the shape of the inside of your mouth changed. Similarly, the artist has the instrument sound pumped into their mouth as they change and re-change the mouth cavity shape and the resulting 'newly shaped' sound bouncing out of the artist's mouth cavity is picked up on the artist's microphone, which then goes to an amp and out to you, the listener.
The talkBox output is sent to an "elctronic Module" that is also connected to the guitar. The guitar is the part that modulates the output sound.
Was indeed a real huge hit everywhere and his masterpiece. The talk box was here so brilliant in the focus of that song. Always liked Peter, starting in The Herd, then Humble Pie and his solo stuff.
This was the first album I ever owned! I got it for my 11th birthday in 1976 and couldn't stop listening to it over and over again!
The sound of a talk-box does not "go through" the guitar. What it does is allow the tube in the mouth to be used to alter (modulate) the signal coming from the guitar.
Simply put. The sound of the guitar comes out of the tube. The tube is in his mouth. He opens and closes his mouth just like taking. And aims his mouth at the microphone
A simple way to play with how a talk box works is to hook up a pair of earbuds to your phone, crank the volume on a guitar solo track, and stick one in each corner of your mouth.
I worked in a store when this song came out. Before the store opened, we would blast this song on the PA system. Everybody would be jamming to this while we were getting ready to open for the day. Good times!
The talk box thing: Essentially it's the guitar playing which determines the musical notes being played while the opening and closing of the mouth modifies the sound (not the notes). It is the same principle used on a vocoder (vocal modification of a synthesized sound). A wah wah pedal does a similar thing but pressure on the pedal changes the dominant frequency of the sound created by the guitarist's playing.
Wife here..Ok , I was Rocking to this song in my Baby Crib..😂..My parents Looooved this song!!!...Literally have heard it all my life..!!!..It is a cool sound..Great Rock Artist and Song..(I think it's called a talk box)..Awesome Reaction!!👍🤘🌹
Frampton Comes Alive! My all time favorite album. He graced my walls in the 70's with the infamous poster. Saw him a few years ago...battling some health issues, but still sounds amazing at 72.
Wow! Been so long since I've heard this. Brought back memories of the 70's. Loved hearing it again!
Saw Frampton in concert in Miami...AMAZING... STILL HAVE THE TICKET STUB!!
The Talk Box allows the sound from the guitar to be run through a tube that you insert into your mouth. How you shape your mouth changes the sound which goes into the microphone. It's more complicated but that is a simplified explanation.
The talk box works by the guitar going thru a box on the floor with a little speaker in it, the sound then goes thru the tube into the mouth. Then he shapes his mouth to make it way wah into the microphone
Thanks for asking about the sound box, I've never understood how it works and now I do.
I love Peter Frampton, he's 10 years older than I am and I had the long blond curly hair he had also. He can still play guitar today even tho he has a muscle disease it hasn't affected his playing.
The tube is acting as the amplifier....the guitar sound comes thru the tube.. directly into his mouth which creates the mouthy sounds .😅😅😅
Every true Rock n Roller has Frampton Comes Alive in their collection.
It was a type of gate effect that basically blended the guitar and voice together.
One of the most underrated guitarist. Baby I love your way.
Darlins....I saw Peter and the Beach Boys and Chicago at Anaheim Stadium around 76. Pretty fun day. 😂❤👍🤙
Normal output from the guitar goes to the amp and then to the amp speaker. Talkbox path is note from the guitar to amp to small speaker in the talkbox thru the tube to the singers mouth where the note is effected by the shape of the mouth and then into the singer mic.
Summer of '76 this was blasting out of every car - a sunshine song. Frampton first saw the talk box at a session where a pedal steel player had one...the rest is guitar history : )

Ahhh….1976, such a great time to be 16 and just got my first car, what a great summer, Frampton ruled and if you had it cranked up the chicks just flowed right over!
My senior year high school(1976) and this album was played everywhere. Summer same year saw Frampton with Yes and Lynyrd Skynyrd outdoors at Hawthorn Racetrack in Cicero IL.
Great choice, I think this album is still on the top 100 best live albums list.
Basically the voice box uses the mouth as the resonator for the guitar moving the mouth alters the sound
He can solo on his guitar and manipulate it with his mouth. The talk box was one of his specialties. Check him out live. His musical history is fascinating. I wore out this double album as I'm sure a lot of young people did when it hit the air waves.
First time I saw Frampton was at Cobo in Detroit as the appropriately 17 year old guitar player for Humble Pie . Early greatness that continued for decades.
Talk box that he plays is actually a tube that the guitar sounds come out of that tube. It's like the guitar amp speaker goes through that tube and sound comes out of that tube and not amp speaker. He moves his mouth open and close to make different sounds. Joe Walsh with Eagle does a talk box too. check out Eagle ...those shoes , Victim of love to name a few
I saw him when he was touring on this album. Gary Wright opened. Ticket prices were only $6 if memory serves 😂 Probably the best concert I have seen!🔥❤️
Frampton comes alive was a complete monster of an album
You are correct. Roger Troutman from the group Zapp was famous for using the talk box. He gave credit to Peter Frampton as being an inspiration in an interview.
If ya'll like the sound of just one Talk box imagine how 2 of them would sound. If you're interested in this please check out the Eagles song called Those Shoes. It's on the Legacy album. Joe Walsh and Don Felder are both playing talk boxes at the same time on this. It's a song that you'll love and never forget.
Saw him in concert in DC way back in the 70's. He was great.

FRAMPTON LIVE was such an amazing album when it came out and still is.
Picked that double-disc up with the other "free" LPs from the Columbia Record Club. Four-to-six weeks for delivery, good tymes
I know the answer to this as I used to work in a music store back in the 80s. How it works is the guitar sound is played through a speaker in the base unit of the voice box up through a plastic tube into Peter's mouth which is then picked up by the microphone. It really is as "analogue" and "old school" as that and I'm sure it rattles his fillings
The Voice box sounds a bit like a WAH Pedal for guitar. It actually add effect to the sound coming from the electric guitar.
Frampton comes alive was a🔥album hit us all like a bullet 🤘👍💞
I saw Peter Framton in the ‘70s. He was opening for my girl Stevie Nicks at Jones Beach. Great time. I was so high after that concert from inhaling all the weed everyone was smoking. LOL
Frampton is one of those acts that should always be reacted too live.
Just imagine what it was like when the record came out and we didn't have any internet to try to figure out how he got that sound from the guitar... lol
This is my favorite Frampton song. Thanks for reacting! :)
Recorded here in San Francisco at Winterland. With a talk box, you don't sing into it, you move your mouth while the tube is in your mouth, and the sound comes out of the amp, the sound your mouth movements. Zapp later used the talk box on his keyboard in 1981. I've been waiting for you to react to this song, I thought you might watch him perform this from the "Midnight Special" live concert show.
He is basically singing the same note he's playing on the guitar simultaneously.
