My father and I had many issues over the years, culminating in 10 years of zero communication. A nephew of mine persuaded us both to make video contact on Christmas day... 6 months later my father passed away, and I wasn't able to attend his funeral due to covid. We resolved nothing on our chat, and it was awkward as hell, but I'm glad we started a little healing in the living years. If you're in a similar situation... compromise... make the 1st move... find a way.

I'm so sorry for your loss but I'm glad you had a good relationship with him. I lost my Dad sux months ago to dementia and was at his bedside when he died. We had a good relationship with just minor issues. One thing that really helped me was writing a letter to him after he passed; I put all my emotions, good and bad, into it and thanked him for all he had done. I sealed it in an envelope and had the funeral home put it in his casket. I did the same thing when my Mom passed away. I sobbed while writing each letter but felt such relief after. You might want to put all your thoughts about your Dad on paper. It might help. Best wishes.

Truly a beautiful song. I only had my father in my life for 20 years, and since he had alzheimers when he passed, I really only had him mentally in my life for 18 years. I was able to tell him all the things I had to say before the end, I'm just not sure how much he was able to comprehend. So, don't wait. By the way, that wasn't "Mike" singing. Mike Rutherford is the guitarist. He is also the guitarist for Genesis. The lead singer on this song is the incredible Paul Carrack.

The wonderful Paul Carrack is doing the vocals on this. You’ve probably heard him on other songs like Silent Running, Tempted (Sqeeze), and How Long Has This Been Going On (Ace). He is one of my favorite, favorite vocalists and it’s like no one else has heard of him. He’s from the UK, has been around since the ‘70s and has a great solo career, too. He’s mostly R&B, Soul, Funk, Blues, and Pop, but the man can sing the phone book if he wants to and I’ll listen to him. I really really wish someone would react to some of his songs… your ears will thank you.

But my dad was very closed off, and I could never get him to to have a heart to heart talk about anything. So when he passed away, we had so many unresolved issues that will now never be cleared up because of both of our stubbornness. Thanks for this one. This song has a special meaning to me. I lost my Dad when he was just 51. I didn't want to admit the reality of his situation. I called him at the hospital the night before he died and I told him I would see him in the morning. He passed away before I arrived. He never saw the birth of my sons and when my second son was born, I felt a strong presence of my father. So the line that says "I wasn't there that morning when my father passed away....... I'm sure I heard his echo in my newborn's tears...." gets me everytime. We did not have a combative relationship, but I was too young to see the gravity of his situation and I regret not talking to him about it when I could

This song makes me think of my grandfather. I was 19 when I lost him. When he became terminal, I lost all nerve to see him. I had no quarrel with him but I didn't feel emotionally strong enough to be around him. I didn't want to feel the pain of loosing him. I was naive enough to think I could avoid it and just not deal with it. It saddens me to think that I let him go through that without my support. He was my father because mine died when I was only 2. I had a lot to learn about grief and the stubbornness to not allow anyone to advise me on it. I remember telling other relatives that I just couldn't bring myself to see him. That I was choosing to remember him the way he was. I could lie to them but I couldn't lie to myself. I tried. I had lost others but no one that I loved so deeply. The pain and regret still linger. I guess it will always be there in the back of my mind until I think about it. Because I handled it so poorly it's never fresh. It's not like the pain you feel remembering the day someone died. He lived for months. So there's no day, it's like that day happened a thousand times. It's much different than other losses I've suffered. I handled those differently and I'm thankful I did. Acknowledging my mistake is cathartic in many ways but I will never have peace. My hope is someone will read this and not make the same mistake.

Today is my step-father's birthday, and he passed away a little more than two years ago. He was my dad from day one, and never treated as anything other than his son, even after he and my mom divorced. We had a good relationship, although we disagreed about some things and we had our moments when we didn't speak, but they were brief. Thankfully, I got to say everything I wanted to say before he passed, and I think he did too. I thought about this song when he was sick, and I made sure he knew how I felt about him and what he meant to me before he passed, and that made it easier to deal with when he died. Happy heavenly birthday, dad!

My biological father ran off while my mom was pregnant with me. I never met him nor even saw a photo of him. However, when I was 13 my mom met and married a wonderful man who treated her like a queen and became the best father ever to me. Sadly, he died just 11 years later from a massive heart attack. I totally understand how a stepdad can be a REAL father like yours and mine were. He's been gone 35 years and I still tear up when I hear this song.

Beautiful lyrics, very touching, and music that suits the words. "Mike" of this band is Mike Rutherford, bassist and founding member, with Peter Gabriel, of Genesis, my favourite band. The lead singer here is Paul Carrack, who had hits throughout the 1970s and 80s with at least three different bands, most notably Squeeze, one of the best New Wave Pop bands of the Punk era.

I had so many issues with my Dad and his alcohol addiction growing up that when this song came out I really wanted to share it with him. Luckily the last time I saw him he had been sober for a few years and we were able to have that conversation. A few months later he passed away while I was deployed to Iraq in 2003.

This song resonates with me not because my dad and I were estranged, but because I was on vacation in Hawaii when he passed away. I remember telling him goodbye and would see him when I came back which of course never happened. It's been 32 years, but it seems like yesterday and I still regret I wasn't there. So the last verse of this song always gets to me. On another note, Paul Carrack is probably best known for the songs "How Long" with the group Ace and "Tempted" with the group Squeeze.

This song always brings tears because it instantly reminds me of what I should have said, could have said, should have done to show my father I loved him so. Now, there is no way of knowing if he realized I loved him during his final hour.

Being a very open, verbose, and expressive person,I don't have a great deal of time for those who are so engrossed in their own lives that they do not find the time or inclination to try to patch up family differences or issues with friends because at nearly 68 in London,I know that things can suddenly change. My wonderful Dad died on the 11th April 1971 and 51 years later I still miss him and my Darling Mum passed while I was on the last day, totally unexpectedly, while I was on holiday in Portugal in 1996 so 26 years later I am comforted in knowing I told her almost every day how much I loved her...

The reason great music is universal and brings people together is that great songs reflect the human condition. Doesn't matter where you come from. I'm a 55 year old husband, father, small business owner. And I very much enjoy watching you two young people from Texas (I think). Music did that, or was at least the genesis of it. There are things we all experience that help us relate to one another. Writing great lyrics is not easy to do. Some great songs are stories about experiences. Some, a great many, are about love and relationships. Very few are about mortality. This song is so powerful. It makes you want to pick up the phone and call your parents, siblings, friends you haven't spoken with in a while. It encourages you to set aside the petty disagreements, to engage, to share......cause you never know what tomorrow brings.

I was there the evening when my father passed away, and I am glad that I got to tell him. I had obtained information on how to say goodbye in ways that ease a person's passing. These were used to tell him how much I loved and appreciated all he had done for me. That his life had been a good one and that all he needed to accomplish had been done. One of his greatest achievements was that his children were equipped to live on after him. Yes, when I was young I thought him harsh, rigid and demanding. Looking around now, I see why he had to be those things, because parents who just phone it in leave disasters behind them.

I had forgotten about this song. It is one of my fav songs. So moving. So raw. So real. I’m so grateful that I got to reconnect with my dad before he died. He took off when I was teen and treated all us kids with a lot of ugliness that I spent a lot of years in therapy to deal with it. Which would have been fine. But getting to talk to him the four years before he died really helped me learn what true forgiveness meant. He didn’t even have to be truly sorry or even completely change for me to just honestly talk to him about what happened and let it go. I thought I had let go of that anger but there was still some left. And we didn’t see eye to eye about what he did. Snd I finally got to tell him how it effected me. It may not have changed him but saying it out loud to him, not in anger, helped me to let go of a lot. Thanks for reminding me of this beautiful song
