I found Marillion back before they signed their first recording contract and the music then was beautifully raw. I think the real spirit was often over produced. The band went through some major transistions when they changed lead vocalist and other members. Special shout out to Marillion and their fans who were one of the first (if not the first) to "go fund" their albums. For that the whole project deserves immense respect.

@@retroreactions.... I recorded a bootleg of them at The Marquee Club in London December 1982 but they were popular on the road long before them. They used to publish their own newsletter called "The Web" which had tour dates and song lyrics. Don't think I have those publications anymore, which is a real shame.

@@retroreactions.... The drummer Ian Mosely will be 70 this year. The rest are in their 60s. They put out one of their best albums last year, and they're still touring. All their albums and tours are funded by their fans. Many of us have been with them for all 40 years!

I've been listening to Marillion since Misplaced Childhood, so 40 years now, and it still remains one of my favorite bands ever (with Fish). The trinity: A Scrip for Jester's Tear, Fugazi, and Misplaced Childhood = forever love.

I've been reading All the Praise for Early Marillion Singer FISH ♥️ ... Love His Solo Works too ! the "Sunsets on Empire" Album of His, Has a multi-track Epic called "Plague of Ghosts" that's Fantastic 💖 ... Also Brandon, Marillion's current and 2nd Lead Vocalist, Steve Hogarth has grown on me Very Well ♥️ try a Later Marillion track called "Neverland" - You Will LOVE 😊 ... Peace !

@@retroreactions.... The album takes on a much darker tone from the point where you left off, it really is superb. If you do some of the newer stuff then the live versions are usually better than studio. Ocean Cloud is a good example of their newer stuff.

Another great reaction Brandon. I’ve been listening to Marillion for a good 20 years. Their first album “Script From a Jesters Tear” from 1983 is one of my favorites of theirs. Another prog band you may like is “Transatlantic “. It’s kind of a supergroup and currently has bassist Pete Trewavas who is from Marillion. Other great prog bands are Porcupine Tree and Spock’s Beard. Keyboard/ singer Neal Morse was with Spock’s Beard but is now with Transatlantic. These are a couple of other groups I enjoy a lot and thought would be of possible interest to you.

In addition to his qualities as a singer, Fish is also recognized for his texts. These are extremely rich. He often develops a very specific theme, introducing numerous references (historical, social or even mythological), sometimes quite complex rhymes and constantly sought-after arrangements, thus accentuating the originality and richness of his songs.

The first time I heard Marillion, I was reminded of Genesis.

I really love this group in the Fish years. Derick William Dick is his real name. They are very influenced by early Genesis and Pink Floyed.

You should listen to this entire album but I think their next album Clutching At Straws is even better. And like you did for this one, you should listen to the first three songs in a row. They are really one single piece... Hotel Hobbies / Warm Wet Circles / That Time Of The Night. And another song from the Fish led era you should hear is the title song Fugazi from their previous album. Fish is a world-class poet. He left the band after the tour for Clutching At Straws and was replaced by Steve Hogarth. My two favorite albums from the Hogarth era are Brave and Afraid Of Sunlight. Both are very different albums.

Superb album as is the following one, another concept album "Clutching at straws" the last for front man & lyric writer Fish. Got into them in '83 with the release of their brilliant debut album "Script for a Jester's tear" , recommend you dive into those 3 albums, they are fantastic. 89's "Season's End" with the arrival of new front man & major writer Steve Hogarth heralded a new, highly creative & successful era for the band which continues to this day. Highly recommend "Season's End" & "Brave" , Cheers

You could have been the vocalist for this band, Brandon. I think you will love them. I don’t know more than a few songs but what I’ve heard, I love. One of my all-time favorite bands. Bud, it would be best to listen to the whole first side. Nah, Fish (singer) was a unique guy with different kind of writing skills. Thanks for doing this.

Marillion were heavily influenced by early Genesis with Peter Gabriel in the Fish era, no two ways about it but they have their own identity.

Their guitarist, Steve Rothery, is in my top 3 of best guitarists together with David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Andy Latimer (Camel)!! So if you like this band, you might like Camel too 🐫. Check out Lady Fantasy!!! Great 🎸 & 🎹

The first two Marriliion albums, Script for Jester's Tear and Fugazi are probably and better example of neo prog.

You need to check out early Marillion, such as Garden Party, Market Square Heroes, Punch and Judy, Assassing, and Incommunicado. There are many more besides.

One of many favorite songs by them, other than this masterpiece album, of course, would coincidentally be the one that reminds me most of Genesis: "He Knows, You Know", it's from their 1983 album, Script for a Jester's Tear. Saw them Live in '84, in a theater-size venue in Montreal... they were amazing!

I'm one of those who thinks that new music should be 'studio first, then Live'. My reasoning is, 'how can one appreciate how accurate a performance is if one doesn't know what they were aiming at in the first place?!', and it just makes more sense to me that way. ;-]

I tend to agree with you on that topic...

My favorite Marillion album, it should be listened to one side at a time, all the songs flow perfectly, and... the whole album has too many parallels with the classic Genesis songs, "Pseudo Silk Kimono" intro / "Carpet Crawlers" intro is just a little example. Let's not even talk about the similarity of Fish's voice to Gabriel's or the sound of Rothery's guitar to Hackett's.

I love the album and the band since christmas 1985, saw them 20-25 times live, incl. 2 shows in the legendary Royal Albert Hall in London in 2019.

Marillion was where a lot of Genesis fans found sanctuary in the 80s as Genesis became more commercial but to see them as a Genesis substitute would be to massively underestimate the quality of the band. Another Neo prog UK band that you might want to check out who started in the mid 90s but maybe did their classic work in the 00s are Porcupine Tree. Their early work was influenced by the spacier Pink Floyd jams but got a little heavier as they progressed. Try ‘Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape’, Up the downstair’ , ‘Dark matter’ or ‘Don’t Hate me’ from their 90’s work.

Probably hear some Jethro Tull influences also.

Man, the first part of Misplaced Childhood is one of the strongest in Prog Rock. OK many unfairly tagged Marillion as 'Genesis Lite', and it is no secret they were massive fans of Genesis music, and massively influenced by the band, with Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery and Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett being the best of friends, as is Fish and Tony Banks. These first three are brilliant the way they bleed into each other with wonderful melodies. What a shame you didn't include the next track Heart Of Lothian, which is after Lavemder, as it's the best on the album, and very much part of this suite of songs. Anyway good reaction again, do Heart of Lothian sometime, you will love it. Great reaction again.

Yes, and BTW there album they released in 2022 An Hour Before It's Dark got Prog album of the year incredible to think they produced music of that quality after 40 years it's a stunning record. Their best song is The Great Escape from 1994 album Brave, about a person contemplating suicide it has incredible sad lyrics and gorgeous melody and guitar solos. Brandon, have you heard of Mike + The Mechanics? British rock group formed in the 80s by Mike Rutherford, guitarist of Genesis. They had a couple of hits that I think would be right up your alley... "Silent Running" being one of them. Check it out.

I think Marillion actually started in the late 1970's as a not very successful hard rock band. They turned prog after Fish joined. They were considered the successors of Genesis after Gabriel left. Steven Rothery is clearly heavily influenced by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. Marillion's early 1980's albums 'Script for a Jester's tear', 'Fugazi' and this 'Misplaced Childhood' are truely great prog albums, as is the mini album 'Reel to real'. After that they slowly changed a bit. And even though their later albums do offer some gems (Easter, One fine day, The space) for me they never reached the level of those first 3 albums. These days their songs are a bit too 'anthemly' for me.

Completely agree. I heard Peter also. But you're right there is Phil in there too. Genesis influence is a great influence. Must hear more. (Is this Marillion's 'Another Brick in the Wall'?)

@@retroreactions.... You might check out 'Virgin Rock' with Amy. She had never heard of Pink Floyd (or listened to rock music being a classical professional). Recently married her husband is exposing her to rock and her insights are amazing. Currently she is doing an extended listen/analysis of 'Another Brick in the Wall'. Never cared for the album, but her comments have given it a huge boost in my eyes. She is about half-way thru. It seems, as a biography of Waters childhood, it might be a better comparison. However, DSOTM is absolute perfection.

Thanks for your excellent reaction and review Brandon. Having never heard this band before, you are uncannily close to the bands' influences. The lead singer 'Fish' used to wear pace paint on stage (a la Peter Gabriel) and the Genesis influence cannot be understated. In fact, the audition piece that he sang to join the band was '(I Know What I Like) in Your Wardrobe! There is a fan-favourite called 'Grendel' which at times borrows directly from 'Supper's Ready' and another song called 'Forgotten Sons' which borrows from Camel. The band still records albeit with a 'new' singer (joined in '89) and has a very loyal following of which I am one. Kindest, Kevin from ear Stonehenge in England.

Genesis vibes for sure. Saw them live back in '86. I remember them being an opening act for someone but for the life of me couldn't remember who. Then I looked it up and discovered it was Rush! Nice bill, eh? Sadly the thing that stands out most for me from that concert is how poor the sound quality was. Way over amped from where I was sitting, deafening. I was definitely into this album, but gotta say I haven't really revisited it since the eighties. So far I like the memories being conjured up. I guess over the years I just found them too derivative to be taken seriously. Too harsh, maybe? Sounding pretty good rn.. Looking forward to having more memories of this album rekindled.

We all gettin OLD! I remember when 8 tracks were still big haha!

I remember buying their debut album, "Script for a Jesters Tear" because it sounded a bit like old Genesis. Try "He knows you know" from that album. Another suggestion in the prog genre is the often overlooked band Gentle Giant often described as the "progiest" of prog bands. Anything from the "Free Hand" album will work. Perhaps the title track. Keep up the great work.

Yes I agree totally. Free Hand is the best album to start with GG. I would advice On Reflection or His Last Voyage. And no, Brandon, not like Camel. In fact like nothing else, too complex although these are short songs. For me what makes to most specificality of GG is that most of their songs aren't chord based but based on intrication of melodies and harmonies and time changes…

@@retroreactions.... I remember Camel as strictly instrumental. Gentle Giant is a different animal entirely with complex vocal layering and the use of the harpsichord creating sort of a baroque sound very hard to describe. Crazy complex, but the 1975 "Free Hand" album is a bit easier to listen. The album "Octopus" is regarded as their best but I'd work up to that.

I loved that album. It marked for me the fact that prog wasn't dead in the 80'. The singer, Fish, was a big fan of Van der Graaf Generator (I know, I insist, 😀). They even have cover of Peter Hammill (VDGG's singer) on some of their own covers…

Hi Brandon - This is another concept album and the track flow into each just like ‘Misplaced Childhood’ but one of my favourites on CAS is ‘Warm Wet Circles’ but they are all brilliant. All the best to you 🇬🇧

@@retroreactions.... Nice one, Brandon. I’m going to say that you won’t regret working your way through them. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 I love Pink Floyd just as much. Yes and Floyd are my two all time fav’ Bands. Though I love pretty much everything from both Bands, for me personally, their best material was what they released during the 70’s. It’s a big Anniversary year for both Bands. It’s only 12 days to go, until the official 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s incredible, ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’. (Released March 1st, 1973). And in December, it will be the 50th Anniversary of Yes’ 7th Studio Album and Masterpiece, (Just my view), ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’. (Released December 7th, 1973). This Album is a ‘Double Album’. (4 Sides). Each side consists of 1 track. To think the first time I heard this Album, was Live, at my hometown venue, aged 17, 10 days before it’s release. This was because the ‘TFTO Tour’, began before the Album was released, so some of us in the UK, had our first listen, Live. It was quite something. 🎶❤️🎶

it gets heavy; hope you do work through the rest of the album in order

Probably my fav album of the early 4 with Fish as lead singer.. Was a good time The Genesis albums after peter . The Peter solo albums , and this lot.. Was sort of hard to pick which was best at the time.

You could hear they were big Genesis fans, was a big fan of Marillion, but with the new singer I’m not interested, they might be ok but they lost everything that was good about Marillion. This is their best album by a country mile, 2nd to that I’d put their live album “Real to Reel”, just my opinion of course. Thanks for bringing real music dude, much appreciated as always.

Kayleigh definitely does have vibes of Phil Collins/Genesis. Your hearing Peter Gabriel in the singers voice, I don’t get that at all……very different timbre IMO ….although vocal style does have echoes of Gabriel. I DO hear Phil Collins though.

Thought I commented already on this tune? Seems to be gone? OK, here we go again. I was never into Marillion, not that I dislike them but because they just did not hit me at that time, The voice sounds a lot like Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel as you mention. And the music in much sense so much Genesis style just after when Peter Gabriel and Steve Hacket had left, around 1978-1979, less developed music bit still fantasyful

Hi ! Well lol ! yes i had this album and i enjoyed it but for a short time ! It s good but just like you said it is songs similar to a blend of the bands from a past era ! clean sounds but nothing exeptional ! too similal to Genesis and Pink Floyd ! They sold a few albums but nothing significant ! But ....Marillion is ...Marillion and they put their print in the music world ! People hungry for something new bought the album but that was back then ! Just another star in the sky ! no super star ! 😎

Interesting take, and I can see all that. As long as the music is great (which this is) then they get my thumbs up...I would love to hear their evolution in their 90s work..

Phil was great but fish is from another planet....

Wow, haven't listened to this in a LONG time. I lost interest in them after they canned Fish (pun intended). I saw them on this tour in a very smallish rock club. Fantastic show and we got to mingle with the musicians after the show at the bar. And yes, Fish was drinking that brandy HARD!
