Madonna was like a raging wild fire in the 80s... you have no ideal how BIG she really was.. and the thing is she could sing, dance, act and Perform Live without special effects.

A little back story: Madonna is a classically trained dancer who gave up her dance scholarship to the University of Michigan after one semester and moved to NYC with $35 to pursue a career in dance. She danced for a few prestigious dance companies like Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey before scoring a gig as a backup dancer for Patrick Hernandez in Paris. Growing impatient, she returned to NYC and started gigging with several new-wave style bands as a backup singer and played drums. She started writing songs and recording and was known in the city as the girl who would shop her demo tapes to deejays at clubs until finally meeting an executive from Sire records. He heard the demo and set up a meeting with Sire President Seymour Stine who was in the hospital for cardiac issues and he met her and agreed to sign her on the spot……in the hospital.

Madonna the Biggest female pop star in the world. not only is she a dancer but she also wrote or cowrote most of her hits and in her early music career she also played the drums, currently she also plays the guitar. This performance was a toned down performance from the Blonde Ambition tour in 1990. That tour made history as no one had done a concert like it was theater. She revolutionized how tours were done and to this day her tours are must see spectacles she always delivers. also the video for this song at the time was one of the most expensive videos ever made to a cost of 5 million dollars. you should check it out its stunning. also from the release of the like a prayer album to the release of the erotica album. she was outselling every other artist on the planet. its her peak years. she has so many different sounds you are bound to find one of her albums that you would love and my guess for you would be the album Bedtime Stories. better yet do it Joni Style and start from the beginning and see how she evolved. it still amazes me to this day how may hits she has and how she was able to stay on top for so long. also side note: reacting to Madonna is gonna bring all the fans who'll relive it all with you. count me in lol

To be fair to Janet, as performers, they have diff sensibilities and priorities. Janet loves her fans and wants to give them almost a carbon copy of her music ie she doesn’t want to deviate too much from the Janet sound that they expect from her. Madonna, on the other hand, wants to challenge her audience and give them reworkings/reimaginings esp of her big hits. As a result, Madonna puts on elaborate, theatrical live shows while Janet’s tours are safe and conventional. They both work, depending on how you like their music. That said, Madonna is light yrs ahead of Janet in terms of creativity. Madonna’s team knows how to stage a show!! 👏🏾👏🏾

She's the Queen of Pop for a reason. The woman is basically a ballerina who sings, her dancing style isn't like any other. You named Janet maybe because of the suit, but they aren't similar at all! She's wearing a suit here because in the video of the song she's wearing it too.

It always amazes me to hear younger people saying they didn’t know Madonna could dance. When I was a kid in the 80s and teen in the 90s Whitney Huston was all about singing, and Madonna was all about great dance anthems and theatrical productions. Miss Jackson was as well but she was more R&B and had more of a military precision style of dance influenced by her brother where as Madonnas roots were in contemporary dance and the club scene (you can see a hint of her love for Voguing in this performance)

I would say Madonna initially inspired Janet, though by the time Janet entered the scene they probably influenced each other, and of course M was influenced by MJ, Bowie, and a lot of female performers like Grace Jones, Debbie Harry and Chrissie Hindes. But Madonna pretty much revolutionized a music concert experience. Most bands touring just performed the music, no dancing, no nothing, just some lights, a stage and their instruments. MJ introduced dance in his shows but Madonna went even further by creating story arcs from song to song that created a theatrical experience. I don’t think any artist was really doing that before her, and now most pop stars create tours based on her blueprint.

I don’t know if better is the correct word but even though I’m more of a fan of Janet’s music, I give Madonna the overall edge if we’re going to do a comparison. The deciding factor for me is that between the two, Madonna is the more inventive performer. Janet, who is more meek by nature, largely played it safe esp in her live shows. I saw her 4x and it was basically the same show. Madonna, on the other hand, is more versatile esp with her tours. Only saw her once live (The Girlie Show) and that was significantly more memorable (and creative) than anything Janet ever did when she was on the road or on award shows. ✌🏽

You need to understand the historical importance of Madonna at that time. She smashed barriers for women at the time. Do you see how she grabbed her crotch? That was the first time a woman did that on public television. It was a big deal at the time. Politicians wanted her arrested at her concerts for indecent exposure and religious people condemned ger to hell for expressing herself. ANY female artist today owes a debt of grattitude to Madonna. She single-handedly forced open the doors for fenale singers to be able to be free with their bodies just the same as men. Say what you want about her music but she forced music companies and the public to accept that women can be sexual on stage without inviting unwanted advances by men. She DEMANDED that women should be equal to men and her viewpoint is why women today can own their bodies rather than show their bodies only at the pleasures of men. If you research and connect the dots, Madonna is the reason female singers today can own their sexuality rather than be exploited because of their sex. This song came out as the Cold War ended and Regan no longer terrorized the gay community and women. At the time people all over the world felt hopeful simply because the fear of nuclear annihilation was no longer a daily concern. Can someone your age ever be able to imagine to understand how we felt growing up back then? I'm Gen X. I grew up with the daily fear that the USSR could nuke is at any moment. Reagan, added to our nuclear stockpile to counter the USSR (known now as Russia today minus the eastern European countries the USSR used to control) His overall strategy was to outspend the USSR and make the oeople on the communist block suffer so much the Communist idea of government would crumble. At that time all oppressed people ariund the world felt a sense of hope and empowerment. Everyone felt a sense of relief and freedom.

I like it better when Madge just lip syncs to her own pre-recorded vocals and focuses on the dance choreography. Sadly, she isn't one of those singers who sounds better live. And speaking of the choreography, this performance was a sneak peak at her Blonde Ambition Tour which would launch just 6 months later in March 1990. You see dance moves from from both "Express Yourself" and "Vogue" in this performance.

Of course Madonna could dance She moved to New York City to become a dancer in the Modern Dance as Art world But she got introduced to NYC’s underground dance club scene the Paradise Garage, Fun House and Danceteria And boom drops Modern dance to become a singer Madonna pretty much started the whole perform and dance through entire songs stage shows for pop music Don’t get me wrong a lot of folks before Madonna danced and performed (sang ) But most were Rock and Roll get down and move these people dancing A little of it might’ve been choreographed but most was just pure bad ass energy Madonna brought a Broadway production type of vibe Where she and her two backup singers would go through a routine for a good portion of the songs in their shows not all of it elaborate but constantly moving What made that different was folks back then were used to singers singing more than they danced at a shows it was yeah girl get it!!! when the singer would jump in with the backup singer’s routine but after a minute it was Yeah Baby that’s cool now get yo ass back to the mic and show us what those Pipes is about!!! 🤣( it was especially the women at the show cuz bad enough she’s up there singing like an Angel in front of my Man now she gonna shake her Hollywood ass in front of him🤣) Then in 83 here comes Madonna with her pop dance music shows with the dance moves as much as a part of the show as the music More of an Extravaganza than a for lack of a better word Rock and Roll show ( if you know anything about music ( and you Do!! J) you know what I mean 🤘🏽😆) And they did it very very well And the rest is pop music history and it’s the standard for music shows today!!!
