This is a true story. Biographical.This song is based on a true story. As Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington tells it, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, who was about 18 at the time, used a fake ID to get in a bar while his younger bandmates Rossington and Allen Collins waited for him in a truck. Van Zant danced with a girl named Linda, whose boyfriend, who was not too happy about it, came up to Ronnie and reached for something in his boot. Figuring he was going for a gun, Van Zant told him: "If you're going to shoot me it's going to be in the ass or the elbows... just gimme a few steps and I'll be gone." He ran to the truck, and he, Rossington, and Collins wrote this song that night.

Several members went to high school together and their gym teacher was a man that gave them a hard time about their long hair. His name was Lennard Skinner. They were wanting to insult him by naming the group close to his name.

Actually, Ronnie and few others went and looked up Mr. Skinner after they had broken into the rock world big time and showed him the cover of their latest album and explained how they had named the band after him. He was their former high school gym class teacher and had given them a hard time over their long hair. By then he had moved on to becoming a real estate agent. They had a great time together for the time they could spend there and apparently he liked that they had named the band after him. You always get along better with your high school teachers after you have grown up a bit and the band were no exception! 😏👌💖😎🎸🎸🎸

They named the band after a teacher (PE if remember correctly) named Leonard Skinner. This is CLASSIC Southern Rock. It was sad when Ronnie van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines (forgive me if I haven't named others that also passed in the crash) died in the plane crash. They have so many great songs Freebird(of course) Saturday Night Special, You Got That Right and many more. Keep going down the Lynyrd Skynyrd rabbit hole.

I am 61 and this was from my time. I am very open minded about music but you are correct - the older stuff is great, not that there isn't some recent that isn't good either.

That was such a fun reaction. I just watched the Boston Peace of Mind reaction right before this and in both cases you're just having so much fun. And in this one, I always liked it when you have your buddy on, he's really cool as well.

Back in the day the the lyrics were amazing and the sound was filled with incredible sounds from actual musicians. A computer can not replicate emotion and the music industry doesn’t want to pay for ‘bands’.

Not derisive. It was his name his parents gave him, LS just replaced the vowels with the letter y. He was their gym teacher and gave them a hard time for having long hair. Saw a picture of the teacher later, as a realtor and he posed next to a relator sign for a home, showing his real name of Leonard Skinner.

The gym teacher told them in high school that they weren't going to make it as a band and that they should cut their hair and get real jobs. This led them to name the band after him. When they were introduced at the clubs they were called Lye Nerd Sky Nerd and so the album was called PRONOUNCED. So you would know how to say their name and the gym teacher would see that they had made the big time. Later on they became friends and the gym teacher actually introduced them at a concert in Jacksonville.

I always thought this was a pure country song set to a great rock beat.

Most of the guys were in High School together. Their Gym Teacher was named Leonard Skinner. Of course, being little shits, they made fun of him by pronouncing it Lynyrd Skynyrd thus was the name found.
