Jonghyun's song is a cover/rewrite of Alejandro Sanz's "Y si fuera Ella," so most people just call it by its original Spanish title, but Jonghyun's version is called "Hyeya" or"Haeya". Haeya is the girl's name (which I understand translates to "her" or "she") that Jonghyun is singing about that is why it's the only word in the English lyrics that isn't translated because there isn't a translation, it's a name. Jonghyun heard the Spanish song and he and his manager loved it so much that Jonghyun had to make it his own -- with the help of Kenzie, one of SM's main songwriters -- by translating and reworking it into Korean and changing it slightly to make it fit his vision of what the song's message was about. This was one of Jonghyun's most epic and iconic performances of this song. And it will forever be a symbol of what made him such a great artist. In the performance the explosion you heard was not a gunshot, but it was his heart exploding. He felt so passionately about the girl that his heart literally exploded. The song is about how the girl, Haeya, left him and he is in pain because she is no longer with him. The whole song is him begging her to come back to him. He loves her so much that he is dying from the pain of being seperated from her, etc. This was Jonghyun's very first solo single and he was only 18 when this song was first released -- only a few months after SHINee's debut in 2008 -- so this just goes to show you how amazing of an artist he really was. (This specific performance was at their SHINee World Concert II (SWC2) in Seoul in 2012, so he is about 22 here.) His mastery of singing, emotion and stage presence is awe inspiring. If he was this good so early in his career, you can see why he has become so highly respected now after more than 10 years in the industry. Hence, why Jonghyun is known as one of the best singers in the industry, and SHINee are one of the top groups that are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They really are one of the most well rounded groups in Kpop that excel at every aspect of the entertainment industry. It's easy to see why everyone looks up to them. Jonghyun was highly respected for his songwriting and composing skills. He was one of the very first Idols to be recognized as a songwriter and he became one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. He was the first SM Idol to have a fully self-wrote album. And all his albums following that were wrote and composed or co-composed by him. His legacy includes several dozen songs credited to him. It's one of the things that all Shawols hold onto as part the legend that he left behind that we feel is our duty to share with the world in order to keep his memory alive. He also wrote about 40% of SHINee's songs and several songs for other artists, such as EXO's "Playboy," Lee Hi's "Breathe," IU's "Gloomy Clock" and Taemin's "Pretty Boy" and "Already," among others. He was special, and it's songs like this where you can see how powerfully he felt about everything he did. One of the things that he was known for was the fact that he was full of love and compassion for everyone and everything in this world, and he often wore his heart on his sleeve. When he performed you could feel every emotion flowing from his being. That's what made him such a great singer/songwriter, but it was also what I think caused him to feel so much pain. He took everything so personally, both the good and the bad and he never thought he was good enough. He did so much good in his short 27 years and he left behind a great legacy, however, his time was much too short. He really was one of the greats. People say that when he walked into a room you could feel his star power, and yet he was so humble and down to earth that everyone instantly wanted to be his friend. You did well Jonghyun, our beautiful angel and diamond in the sky.

Thanks for the great explanation about this song and jonghyun’s career. I kinda hate it when people think this songs or performance has anything to do with his depression when it’s just a plain old breakup song performed really well 😅 jonghyun was an emotional person in general which is why he was so good at bringing out the exact feelings the songwriter wants to covey, not every sad song he sang is “a cry for help”...

This was Jonghyuns solo debut song which he recorded when he was 18. With the aid of Jennie and the original singer the lyrics were rewitten to what you heard. Jonghyun held an 8 octive high vocal range from low to falsetto. This is one of many fav songs for me thanks for the reaction

Jonghyun was an amazing artist who was able to portray any emotion through his singing. This song was the first solo song Jonghyun did for a SHINee album. This performance is to reflect the emotion of the song, rather than a personal cry for help. Jonghyun was very open about his struggles with depression, and his legacy should not be overshadowed by his tragedy. This performance looking back after everything that has happened can be triggering, for obvious reasons. However, at the time of this song release it is meant to be a song about the pain of heartbreak. So please do not let this prevent you from exploring more about Jonghyun and his discography. He is a beautiful person and an extremely talented artist, who should be celebrated for all that he was able to achieve and the music he was able to create and share with us.

His Shinee members call him the best artist and he will always be the best artist to me, too. I've read that he personally defined music not as melody or harmony or rhythm but as telling a story, and he had an unparalleled ability to make us live each song fully with him as he performed it, whatever that story might be: tragic, melancholy, sensual, happy. Such an extraordinary combination of talent and craft and technique and intelligence and creativity and emotional honesty and stage presence - he's completely and permanently remade my understanding of what a musician can be. Not to mention his voice. I find it hard to imagine that anyone else in the known universe will ever have his range of ability, all the different ways he used his voice (contrast this song with Moon, with Love Like Oxygen, with Skeleton Flower, with Nothing Better, with A Woman's Work, with Take The Dive, with Beautiful Tonight, with Crazy...I could keep going :-)), and how between one syllable and the next he could seamlessly switch from one style to another. Best. Artist. Ever.

Jonghyun is such a precious person - as an artist and as a human being. I'm so glad you took the time to react to him and I really hope you explore more of his work (and him!) - it ranges from heartbreaking, to funny, to comforting, to sexy, and to the profound. There's so much to discover. He's the definition of a true artist and his vocals and writing are some of the best. The fact that he had a solo on SHINee's first album, at the tender age of eighteen, is just proof of both his hard work AND his innate talent. I hope you can discover some of the person along the way, as well. There are so many interesting and beautiful aspects to him as a human being. Of course, like people are, he was a complex person and I think the emotions he shared with us through his music, writing, radio-work, speaking, ect. were just as complex. I like to see this performance as another part of that - his many talents and his beautiful self - with all of its many shades. Hence, while shawols find it important to speak about the reality of what happened, we also like to pay homage to his work and remember the beautiful things he left us with - like this performance. And it's another form of proof of just how great he was and what a great impact he's left on the world. You did well, Jonghyun. Love you, miss you, and sorry, always.

This song was composed by the great Spanish pop star Alejandro Sanz and Jonghyun wrote the Korean lyrics, staying as close to the original as possible. The Spanish title Y si Fuera Ella is What if it Was Her in English. One of my all time favorite performances. Thank you for giving it the attention it deserves. I have to imagine that Alejandro strongly approved of this rendition. How could he not.

Jonghyun was very few k-pop artists I recognized only with the voice even when I didn't listen to K-pop. And I was really in shock to hear the news back in 2018.. it really still saddens me sometimes that this talented artist is now not with us, but also appreciate for the songs he gave us. And still to this day, I consider him one of the best vocalist in k-pop, his voice is just so powerful and emotional, very distinctive which is very hard to find these days.. I watched music show on tv one day, and I'm surprised non of the artists were doing live these days? (they sound like they're doing live, but apparently they're not since I can see them lip-syncing and even some of them kept messing up) and even when they were doing live, most of the soloists just doesn't have this much energy and emotions.

At this point he had been singing this song for years (since 2008). The guy MASTERED it. This is not a cry for help, this is him being an amazing singer. Please don't reduce his performance to the little you know about him. There are other instances, on other videos, where you could have said something like that, but not here I promise. He is incredible, and here that's really all there is. Let him have that. Not everything he did was linked to "everything that happened". The lyrics coupled with his voice give a lot of strong emotions, yeah, but you can't put any others thoughts on him here.

He was an incredible talent taken from us way too soon. His vocals are beyond amazing. When my daughter showed me this, I cried from go to whoa. And almost screamed at the gunshot. He was such a tortured soul and it was so saddening that he felt he only had 1 way out of his pain. Thankfully, the industry is a bit more supportive of idols mental health now, but it was a tragedy that is was too late for Jonghyun. Rip. ❤️❤️

Here you are again. You made the same sort of comment on this reactor's SHINee DCM reaction yesterday. There is no need for this. Just go back to enjoying bts then.

@@teresahowells4879 if only these armys knew how much their idols loved respected and admired Jonghyun and Shinee, they would not dare insult his memory and talent. If they knew how much their Shinee sunbaes cheered them on in the beginning especially JJong being very vocal as he was. BTS may have upgraded global KPop recognition to a superhighway but it is groups like GG, BigBang, SuJu, Shinee and of course EXO that paved the way, the first to perform to be INVITED to perform and pack stadium venues in major continents around the world. They forget that these guys did it before the internet exploded, where rankings were determined by actual numbers of purchases made, requests to radio and TV stations and magazines. Not just streaming videos or clicks. Forgive their myopic world view, they haven’t seen or known enough. Don’t come @ me either armys because I’ve known BTS since they were called the bangtan boys, and while their rap line is amazing, their vocals are not the best in the industry. Not while we still have Eungkwang, or Changsub, or Chen, or Baekhyun, or Jinki, or Kihyun or Kyuhyun. No disrespect to Jimin, Jin or Jungkook, they have definitely improved a lot and have plenty to be proud of and can be listed in one of the best list for vocals but these are just facts. Vocal prowess is more than just high notes and falsettos. If you could hear Jonghyun and Shinee harmonies and still baldly claim your BTS is better vocally, your hearing is prejudiced.

@@hiddlespearean Yes, I agree with you. I hope OP reads your comment. Sadly however, a lot of armys don't want to hear it. I remember the days when rankings were gained from how many albums or singles an artist sold. A much more realistic gauge of how popular an artist actually was, because the public would only be buying one copy. And no mass streaming, voting etc etc was involved.
