One of the most underrated bands in history of rock. We children of the 60s should be ashamed that we didn’t educate our kids to this

No shame here! My kids have it ingrained into their brains. It’s funny when I look at their music choices. They have our old stuff in their collection. ❤️

Not so fast! We certainly did! We wanted well rounded stoners! (No matter how welll you raise them they're eventually going to get high. They might as well have the right music!)

Nope, 18, bass 19 singer and drummer.
Grand Funk Railroad is a great American rock band from the 70's. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is one of my favorites. But they had a lot of great hits such as "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "The Loco-Motion", "Walk Like A Man", "Shinin' On", "Bad Time" etc.

Best song they ever did was I can feel him on the morning.....
This was a performance from the fall of 1969. PBS television company, in its second year, put on a music program in Hershey Pennsylvania called the Show, which has 57 musical artists and groups performing for high school age students to address political and social issues of the day. The Show featured this incredible performance by Grand Funk Railroad as well as performances by Mountain, Deon, James Taylor, Zephyr, Jerry Jeff Walker singing his new song , Mr Bo Jangles, and many more. I have three of the programs recorded and watch them constantly.
I love Grand Funk Railroad! They were one of the best 3 piece bands, in my opinion!

They were fantastic but don't forget Budgie. They were just as good, a little harder with some ballads.
No one is prepared for this song. What a great song! total banger!
It's a crime that this band isn't in the Rock And Roll HOF! You need to check out 'Paranoid', 'I'm Your Captain', 'Lonliness'. You'll love them all... guaranteed!
My first real concert, Grand Funk Railroad at Shea Stadium!! I was 12.🔥🔥🤘
That’s what you call a f - - king live performance!!!!
When those nickel bags used to yield close to a dime! Would people today know those terms anymore?

Amazing story, I saw them live in 1973, one of the best rock shows ever.
Did you notice the masking tape on lead singer/lead guitarist, Mark Farner's guitar? It was the only guitar he could find to buy on credit at the time. It was hollow so he stuffed it with foam rubber, taped over the holes and threw some green paint on it. It did the job tho! Unfortunately later, the group got disgruntled. Mel, the bass player and Don the drummer told Mark they were signing over their share of the group to protect it (like a trust) and Mark agreed to do the same. Mark's paperwork was different. When he signed, he unknowingly agreed to give Don and Mel his share of the band. Mel and Don now play in Michigan Indian casinos, mostly like a tribute band and Mark performs on his own. Mark wanted to do a reunion tour but the other 2 guys are being a PITA! They had issues with the IRS at one point and Mark fought against them, maybe contributing to their split.
@lethaldone
Ай бұрын
You’re telling a very one sided version of what actually happened. Farner distanced himself from his band mates by diving into Christian rock and trying to incorporate that music into the bands genre. I would fly half way around the world to see them perform but without Mark Farner, Grandfunk isn’t the same band. He’s one hell of a front man.
@bella-xp7qd

Mark is still part of the corporation, even though he's not In the band.

It certainly did not help that their manager Terry Knight screwed them over and the band lost the rights to all their music produced prior to March 1972.
@stevenewcomer8837
Ай бұрын
@@lethaldonewell I don’t know what’s wrong with “telling a one sided story” if you’re telling the side that contains the truth. Don and Mel did trick Mark into signing his rights to the band over to them. Heck MARK was Grand Funk Railroad! Now he can’t even represent himself as “Mark Farner former member of Grand Funk Railroad". Without Mark GFR would’ve never existed. Mark was the lead singer, guitarist, pianist, harmonica player and wrote 98% of their original songs. Mark even wrote most the song “We’re An American Band” which Don wrote the first couple of verses of the lyrics and Mark wrote the majority of the music including Don’s drum intro including the idea for the cow bell. Then when they were getting ready to finish the details, Don asked Mark if he could take full credit for the song because he hadn’t gotten full credit on anything with the band before, so Mark out of the goodness of his heart, gave away his rights to Don which was witnessed by the band’s publicist Lynn Goldsmith. Well the song went on to be GFR’s biggest hit.
For me, this is one of the best live performances on KZread. They were a huge, huge band, sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles, were famous for their live shows & had a bunch of hits. They were the biggest band in the US for a good amount of time, while the British bands were kicking our butts, lol.
When the lead singer/harmonica player/Guitarist plays with a stank face you know you’re in for an experience to remember😏🥴😂🫵 ☮️❤️🙏🌎🌏🌍🤲❤️☮️
I'm your Captain...."studio version" luv your channel Shon keep on Rockin....there's a liot of ground to cover.
These guys sold out New York's Shea Stadium in just three hours in 1972. It took The Beatles almost three months to do the same thing. They were an amazing band! No remix, no auto-tune, just three talented guys puttin' it down! Great stuff.
This was a band not to be messed with. Very skilled. ❤
Shon, all eras of music are great, but 60's and 70's music is a whole different level! Toke in the 60's and park your ass in the 70's!PEACE!☮🎛🎸🥁🎙🎶😜🤘👏👊🏿
I had two of their great albums…I think one was a double set…wore them out! This is a great song, band, vibe! How bout the guitar riff? Famous! These guys led the league in rockin’ it all night.

I bought that double LIVE album in 1974 when single LPs sold for $5.00 CDN. The double live album sold for the exact same price. What a bargain!

I definitely like Grand Funk's version.
3 dudes in there very early 20’s just tearing it up. It’s crazy how good this band actually was and they’re not in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame, that might be crazy- err-err…. err 🫵
Also...try Chicago 25 or 6 to 4 ..live at Tanglewood
Check out their live performance of "Heartbreaker," you'll love it!
It's so weird , because I grew up listening to Grand Funk , , Deep Purple , Black Sabbath , Johnny Winter , Frank Zappa , , I was jamming to this over 40 years ago when I was 10 ! Yes , it still jams just as much today ! Hey , keep on jammin !
At that time, they were only a three member band. 1972 they added a keyboardist.
Their from Flint,MI a 3 man ban. Grand Funk Railroad is cool. Thire from Flint,MI started in 1967. They name there ban because the train 🚂 would car frame's by railroad for GM plant in Flint,MI a lot of people work there. I believe all there parents work for GM.
Mark Farner on Guitar and Vocals, Don Brewer on Drums and Vocals, and Mel Schacher on Bass. A Great, Great, Band.
Railroad is my fav by grand funk. They have nice play list
Possibly the greatest live rock & roll performance of all time.
The ultimate 70's rock song.
Shon, that’s called echoing, not piggy backing. So glad you are enjoying our “old folks” music!!
Somebody give that drummer a drink...
Oh man, Grand Funk put the capital F in funk! I’ve seen them live and they are so 🔥. You’ve got to check out more. Do “Some Kind of Wonderful” next!
Saw them three times in 1969 '70 and '72. They put on a kick ass rock show. As good as any I've seen and better than many. The loudest concert I saw up until an outdoor festival in '76. I think this is one of the top twenty rock performances ever captured on video.
Mark Farner.... Bass guitar (early), drums (Black Brass song), keyboards (before Craig Frost joined), Lead Guitar, Incredible Lead vocals and writer of 90% of the GFR material. One of the most talented front men to ever walk onto a stage in the history of music. What a talent and still touring to this day...
Bro, There is only one other live performance ever to equal this one; Jimi Hendrix's rendition of the National Anthem at Woodstock...Also a must-see, he didn't live to see this performance coming to define an entire decade of US history. The reason; he miraculously brings the sounds of the Vietnam War out of that upside down Fender Stratocaster. Riveting and beautiful at the same time. Damn, Jimi, we miss you. Hope you'll check it out, man. If not in a reaction, just for yourself.
Grand Funk Railroad was one of the best live bands of all time
This song is dope. Really about dope. Nickel bags are now dime bags.
Such an underrated band and Mel is such an underrated bassist. So many great songs. I’m Your Captain, Shinin’ On, Footstompin’ Music, Black Licorice (live) and many more.
Here's Heartbreaker from when they sold out Shea Stadium. Only 2 bands ever did that, The Beatles and Grand Funk Railroad, but GFR did it 3 weeks faster than The Beatles did! kzread.info/dash/bejne/gGatr6WPhNG5lc4.html&pp=ygUIZ2ZyIGxpdmU%3D
YES!! Thank you! I love this song and band!
Shon...Just listen to these guys. Mark Farner vocals, lead guitar, harmonica, Don Brewer kick ass drums vocals, Mel Schacher dynamic bass. Great power trio. Your reaction says it all.
I knew you would love this one! Great performance from a 3 piece.
FYI >> Grand Trunk RR which runs through Flint Mi. is where they are from so, they named themselves Grand Funk RR.
There ain’t no next , I think that was the best exhibition of Rock &Roll that you’ve ever gonna see !!
Shon, So glad you got around to reacting to this great song. Great reaction !! In their day, they ROCKED !! GFR Always gave it 110% and Left their hearts on the stage. They closed each show with this song. They had a RABID Fan base (mostly "Chicks"). When they opened a show for someone, they always "Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep (Half the crowd left when Led Zep came on.)!! Led Zep never let them open for them ever again !! When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces, the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !! When promoters finally realized just how popular they were, GFR became the "Main Act". GFR became known as the originators of "Stadium Rock". They filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea Stadium in New York, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took 3-weeks to sell-out Shea !! I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl. the Promoters sold 15,000 tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 City of Miami police cars !! If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, even the guitars and Amps !! He left them NOTHING, or they would have been the biggest Band EVER !! Their leader and front man Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to ever come out of Flint, Michigan (except maybe the GM Buick). There is NO GFR without Mark Farner !! WAKE UP R&R Hall of Fame !! It is criminal GFR is not in the HOF !!
- Mark Farner (vocals, guitar, keyboards, harmonica) - Don Brewer (drums, vocals) - Mel Schacher (bass)
First concert I experienced at the Chicago stadium on the Shining on tour! I will never forget Mark Farners chrome guitar reflecting all the stage lights.
They were only 20-years-old right there! That was their first year together as Grand Funk Railroad, and three years later they sold out Shea Stadium in seven days. It took the Beatles seven weeks! Crazy thing, too, is that Mark Farner (the lead) was "relearning the guitar." He hadn't played for nearly two years, and he only learned how to play at the age of 15. Farner is 73 now and still playing! They disbanded in 1976, and reunited briefly in the mid-90s. But then the other two cut Farner out completely around 1998. He's been playing with his own band ever since. They were special those first few years. God definitely made Mark Farner to play music from his soul.
Grand Funk “Were An American Band” was the first album I ever bought, still have it today!
Saw them first in 1969. They tell me I had a good time. 😵💫Then again in 1970. While Jimi Hendrix was playing Star Spangled Banner for us on July 4th at Atlanta Pop, these crazy bastards flew their Learjet over the crowd at tree top level. It cost their pilot his license, but what a show!! Saw them again about ten years ago and they still rock even though they lost Mark Farner. Great American band!!
Grand Funk one of the greats of the 70's, they were from my area of Michigan the thumb area above Detroit. Check out "Were An American Band" 😊Peace ✌️ and ❤Gary
They have another song I think you’ll recognize, “We’re an American Band”. Pretty sure this is the only song that their drummer sings. Check it out
another great tune by them is "Little Johnny Hooker"
Gr8 job as always bud!!!!
- "Longhair", "Bass Man", and "'Fro Guy" ROCK!!! :D - Saw them live; and yeah, it's like that! :) - BTW, lots of great 'Grand Funk' awaits you; enjoy...
Yes!!! I was gonna request you to check this out!
Check out The Stampeders, a great Canadian band. Their two most successful songs are 'Sweet City Woman' and 'Wild Eyes'
"I'm your captain" live is another must react to song. An amazing band who should be far more recognized than they are.
Not bad for 3 guys and their obvious talents‼️❤️
My All Time Favorite Grand Funk Railroad and all time favorite reactor song. Glad you were blessed to see and hear this. Banger !!!!
My dude, Mark Farner(lead guitar, singer, and the songwriter of 90% of Grand Funk's songs), had just turned 21 in September, this is happening on Nov of 69. When I saw GFR in 72/73 or so, they took cool to a new level for me. Like the song here is yet another topper, he is STILL rocking steady...
Now . . . THIS is rock 'n roll! Great reaction, Shon.
I was in Okinawa from 1977 to 1978. As a "newbie" I got to hear "Closer To Home" humdreds of times and heard hundreds of drunk Marines rocking that song played by local Japanese bands cuz their time was up and time to fly home after a years tour there. When it came my time..yeah, it was so gawddamn cool!!! By the way, GFR was panned by the critics as a suck rock band. The critics are forgotten and rock lovers know who GFR is. They have an album called "Good Singing, Good Playing" that was produced by Frank Zappa and it rocks balls out! Zappa played on Out To Get You when the piano plays a couple seconds solo and daaaaamn!!! But Pass it Aroundand Just couldn't wait and Miss my baby are FIRE!!! The vocals on Miss My Bab are great..kzread.info/dash/bejne/lWel26ePgsvHocY.html
In my top five favorite concerts. So much energy. Other songs to check out off the top of my head, Mean Mistreater Black Licorice Railroad Rock and Roll Soul We're An American Band Footstompin Music I'm Your Captain Walk Like A Man Paranoid Are You Ready? Shinin' On Loneliness
The drummer Don Brewer had a natural fro and wore it for over 40 years. His hair eventually relaxed somewhat, and today, he wears it a but straighter.
There aren't many 9 minute tracks that can keep building and keep getting better until the end, and keep a listener engaged. We're all used to the music industries 3:30 song duration template. This is an exception. GFR do not get the creed they deserves. Keep up the honest reactions Shon.
Paisley's or a shirtless vest, love those 70s bands. ❤😂
Saw them a few times, the 1st about 1974 at the State Fairgrounds Arena - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - Backup was Eric Burdon. Good Times.
Aerosmith "Big 10" Record" A song about his 10" Harmonica...
"the fro guy" lmao instant classic bro bwahahahaha great under rated band with tons of killer tunes man. Jump into the rabbit hole.
All that Great sound from just 3 dudes is amazing 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
A lot of action for 3 guys.
If you love the harmonica on this song, the n it is a must that you react to "people get ready" live by Darrell Mansfield. It is a must and you will not be disappointed.
It is just SO good. If an alien landed on earth and asked about Rock & Roll, We could just point them at this song.
Love these guys, saw them in Raleigh in 1970.
The way he plays reminds me of Terry Kath of Chicago. Banging those cords with such style and force. The drummer is fantastic!
My 1st concert. We met them at their hotel coming in after the concert and got all their autographs.😊
I'm from the same area of Michigan that they are. A hometown favorite when I was young.
If you like harmonica Stevie Wonder plays it alot he's from Saginaw, Michigan near Flint were Grand Funk was from. Another great harmonica song is J. Girls Band "Whammer Jammer" saw them 3 times in the 70's as Tony the Tiger would say there GRRRReat! 😅 Peace ✌️ and ❤ Gary
GFR is so fantastic! If I ever found a genie in a lamp, I would have one wish. I would wish that all of the kids who do reactions to the music I grew up with, got to go back in time and sit through one of the concerts!
Oh check out the VH1 Documentary on Grand Funk it's a crazy story.
Michigan's best band ever. Grew up in NW Ohio in the 70's GFR was a staple
Love it, saw them several times in the early 70s. This song is based on a prison work song that was transcribed by Alan Lomax in the 1930s and turned into a blues-rock recording by The Animals in the mid-60s.
Check out the live version of “Footstompin Music” and “We’re an American Band”… both bangers!
Is that a harmonica...No way! My favorite instrument... Awesome review!
If I could give a thousand thumbs up I'd do it! I was 16 years when they played this and I ain't never been normal ever since!
3 Piece band and no special effects. Brilliant performance.
Great reaction 🤣 That is exactly how I reacted the first time I watched it 🤣 This is in my top 3 live videos, the others being black Sabbath war pig's live in Paris 1970 and sultans of swing live by dire straits 👏
You can't go wrong with Grand Funk Railroad. Start with their first album "On Time" and just keep going. You WILL NOT regret it.
Love your reaction!! You need to do “American band” by these guys!
You just watched one of the greatest primitive rock bands to ever step on the stage.
My top 2 live perfomance. This and joe cockers version of little help from my friends🤘❤️
Ok. So I have a playlist dedicated to reactions of this particular Band/song/video. If the reactor reacts the way I think it should be done AND makes me laugh and gets surprised by the Harmonica part I add that reactor to my playlist. You just got added ❤
They do a song called “Paranoid” that kicks ass ✌️😎
Grand Funk Railroad is such an underrated band! The bass player, Mel Shacher, did some real heavy lifting in this song. Of course, every band member is incredible, but we really have a bad habit of overlooking the bass player. And Mel Shacher is one of the greats, in my opinion.
You had said that the harmonica is your favorite instrument don't know if you're familiar with the band Blues Traveler check out a song the mountains win again one of the best harmonica players. And if you want to stay in the 60s Vibe check out the video of 10 years after from Woodstock the song is called I'm going home.
You are gonna rock with this vibe Shon, for sure!😁🤘
Thanks for running this song, I have not heard it in a very long time.
Such a crime these guys aren't in the HOF! They sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles! I can remember listening to the radio when the DJ said these guys were voted America's favorite band in early 70's. I have always been a big fan and the first time seeing this video fr4eaked me out! Never seen a performance this damn good! Just amazing! There some concert video of I think Shea stadium and the stadium is actually flexing from all the people jumping up and down! Freaky as hell!
