Gordan Lightfoot was certainly a Canadian ambassador for musicians. He wrote some of the best lyrics along with being an amazing storyteller when he sang. He is sorely missed by all in Canada. RIP Mr. Lightfoot. From one who met you in 1972 and never forgot it, Mema Ghostkeeper.

That has some really dark and personal issues for him. You could listen to any of Gordon's songs, and you'd get a full tapestry of a story. He and Jim Croce and Harry Chapin Jr.

In my senior English class on Fridays, the teacher would play songs and ask us what we thought the song was about, and what we thought about the songs. Loved Fridays. This was one of the songs.

Really appreciated your reaction to Gordon Lightfoot's If You Could Read My Mind. He was one of the best singer songwriters of his time. I loved his songs so much that I still have the original vinyl. Every song was heartfelt and genuine. So glad to take the time to research the backstory of the song. It makes it that much more relatable. Wishing you much success.

You have great insight Drew I love how you appreciate the deeper meaning of lyrics and isn't it wonderful how lyrics can be adopted by other artists and make it their own. I had a Gordon Lightfoot album back in the day, his lyrics and music can take you on a deep emotional journey it can be a good way to explore our own relationship with emotional matters.

“I’m just trying to understand, these feelings that we lack.” Years later, his daughter would mail him for this lyric. She said “mom wasn’t the only reason your marriage failed. You share half the blame.” So Gordon began singing it “feelings that WE lack.”

It's really cool that you're getting into Gordon Lightfoot, one of the great singer-songwriters. And he was Canadian. But I do have to at least point out that if you think there was an actual real beef of major importance between Neil Young and Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd, you've fallen prey to rumors. There was a little tension around it initially but the two respected each other greatly and became friends.

They would play songs from each other for fun. I think it elevated both Neil and Lynyrd Skynyrd due to the fake feud.

I agree with you that there are strong similarities to Elvis. 1st I think they are both natural baritones. But that is not the main reason. They both sing songs like a Balladere. Singing Ballads. Yes his voice is soothing !

Please do Gordon Lightfoot’s Sundown. It’s a really good story. The girl he is talking about is the same girl that killed John Belushi. It was a speed ball. Coke and heroine. She shot it into John’s arm and he died. She ended up doing time.i think you would enjoy! Please play it for me now. I show up for all your stuff. You want regret it. No one is going to blame you for pausing and speaking to your mom. Family First!! I’m really loving your channel. Keep up the great work. I will be back tomorrow. I love your energy💜💜💜💜

The singing style is like Elvis in that he uses vibrato from the first word of the line to the last. It's not a style used often today, where most artists have a smooth line and add vibrato only at the end of the line, or word.

I always enjoyed him and, I consider him very poetic. Your more learned listeners could tell me if I’m off base, but I think, once you said the comparison thing, that when he drops a little lower, his voice has a controlled tremble like Elvis’ Voice Did in certain songs, Which was quite appealing.

Gordon Lightfoot does have a deeper than tenor register, and his soft rock sound is very soothing. Interesting that you mentioned the 24 bars of this song sounding like "Greatest Love At All" and his lawsuit that he dropped. What you may not know is that that song was a Top 40 hit before Whitney recorded it in 1985 by George Benson in 1977. It was from the Muhammad Ali movie "The Greatest".

I heard this when it first came out. Guess that dates me, But….songs that you can instantly remember after 50 years have power. They can uplift us but also feed hate, rage or sorrow and if listened to repeatedly can really influence our outlook on life. This song has a sad topic yet it is beautiful and soothing. Gordon was really a master of his craft. I was inclined to think that I was rejected current music just because that is what people tend to do as they age. But looking at reactions I hear both elders and younger generations saying that music has lost something both in talent and content. And it is true that the performers of the 50s, 60s and 70s had no digital manipulation to hide behind.

Back in those days, that boat was indeed the logo for Reprise Records. It has nothing to do with the Edmund Fitzgerald. This song predated the Edmund Fitzgerald's last voyage.

Reprise Records was started by Frank Sinatra in 1960 then sold to Warner Bothers in 1963. The steamboat was just the logo they used on their record labels and had nothing to do with Gordon Lightfoot.

I like this song better on stage with less production. All he really needs is his guitar and his voice and words. This song is really pretty brutal toward her and is about as decisive of a breakup speech as there could be. He's trying not to be unkind, but he's lost his feelings for her because she's shallow. That's the impression I get, especially from the second verse. When he sings the line about the book sold in the drugstore on stage he gives a very obvious, sarcastic smirk.

Beautiful song by Gordon Lightfoot. Maybe the guy who included a part of it in his own song did not do it consciously. Sometimes, I say something to somebody, who says it back to me a few weeks later as if he just had this new idea. It is not so easy to realize that and idea comes from somewhere else.
