This is true,. A lot of people commenting negatively about Faith don't know, but she had never heard Janis' version before. And her producers would not allow her to hear it, so that she could record it fresh without being influenced by Janis version. They wanted her to do her own interpretation. It was good move imo. It turned out to be her first big hit!

Faith Hill is a huge country artist. Check out "Breathe", from 1999. She won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album that year. The video has 30 million views!

HA! - figured this may be coming after BJ's convo the other day during Janis' original. I like her version and it's more melodic and more upbeat but it's definitely its' own thing that doesn't capture the pain that Janis does. Faith is singing after going to therapy and working through her issues responsibly, while Janis is walking down the street holding Jack Daniel's hand in public.

I think that was Southern Comfort, not Jack Daniel.

Faith had never heard Janis Joplin's version before and her producers decided not to let her hear it. Instead, they gave her a demo of the song to learn it from fresh without ever being influenced by Janis' previous version. It became her first hit. She didn't hear Janis' version until later.

There are a couple of songs that stand out to me that Faith sang, that you would never know a man wrote them. They are "It Matters To Me", I believe Alan Jackson wrote this one and the other one is called "I Can't Do That Anymore". Two of my favorite Faith songs. Two songs showing how strong a women is and how emotionally invested in her relationship with her man. Nothing wrong with that, all good. May bring a tear to your eye. ❤️🙏✌️

The original "Piece of My Heart" was recorded by Aretha Franklin's older sister Erma 2 years earlier in 1967. Joplin copied her style and evrrything. Franklin had the same song on both sides of the single.

This was a nice cover, but listening to it made me realize how much Janis brought to her version of this song…while listening to it I kept thinking Faith’s missing some ab libs here and there… Janis’s version I first heard when I was a little kid and because of how raw and unique it was I remember it all these years later…if the roles were reversed and I heard Faith’s first, I probably would have forgotten she had sung this song…there’s nothing memorable about it…

This cover was easy to digest... commercial... Joplin's you FEEL her pain. Anyone who puts the two versions even near an equal footing just doesn't "get" art. I know how that sounds...but I don't care. It's true .

Faith Hill is a huge Aretha Franklin fan, so it makes sense she would cover the original by Aretha Franklin‘s big sister, Erma Franklin. A slow, soulful song. Much prefer it to Janis‘ cover.

Faith Hill is really good. However this version lacks the heart that Janis puts into the song. It's still good however.
