AND the Pentatonix version is hope - showing there is still a chance for us to get better. Listen to all three back to back to back. Amazing the feelings emoted by each one is so different.

Disturbed's version is one of the greatest remakes of all time. Born in '61, I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel's version. A softer sweeter and much sadder version of the song. The visceral raw anger of Disturbed's version hits so much harder!

Michael Bazoitis, I totally agree with you. The MEANING of this song is so serious and literally heart wrenching, but personally, I feel that Simon & Garfunkel sang it in way that actually juxtaposed the meaning of their own lyrics. They sang it too softly, and even a bit lighthearted. Yes, it had a slight tone of sadness to it, but more of a bittersweet sadness, not TRUE sadness. But it also sounds lighthearted, which doesn’t fit. If you listen to S&G’s version NOW (especially after hearing this cover) you’ll detect the lightheartedness I refer to. David Draiman’s gutsy vocals and anguished tone (and expression) really did this song justice. It’s literally the best cover of ANY song I’ve ever heard in my entire life.

@Vmurph Discussing musical opinions is so much fun because there is no right or wrong. While I love Disturbs version of the song, it isn't my favorite remake. My three favorite remakes of original songs are in descending order: 3. Johnny Cash sings Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" 2. Disturb sings Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence." 1. Whitney Houston sings Dolly Parton's "I will always love you." I will admit number one and number two are very close!

I actually thought it was originally Whitney’s song and that Dolly just covered it. I LOVE Johnny Cash!! Have you heard Dan Vasc’s cover of “Amazing Grace” that recently went viral? Omg, I’ve heard literally hundreds of different versions of that song, and Dan Vasc’s is the absolute BEST cover I’ve ever heard. He’s a metal singer, like David Draiman. He even covered Disturbed’s cover of Sound of Silence (pretty much identically), but his cover of Amazing Grace is off the chart. He gave it the respect and emotion that song deserves. Just search ‘Dan Vasc Amazing Grace’ and you’ll find it. Get ready for goosebumps 😁

My granddaughter of 8 years old told me her interpretation of the song. She looked up at me with those big brown eyes and said "Grandma, I know, The people on one side of the water have the music, but no instruments and the people on the other side have the instruments but no music. But the boat brings them together because they need to come together to make music in the world." I looked in her big brown eyes and my heart swelled with emotions. In those eyes I seen an innoscence yet a gentle wisdom. To her it was about working together. Whether her understanding is of this song, I don't know but it was beautiful. ❤

"and the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made" - to me, the heaviest line in the song. We're determined to follow and worship something so we make and fall for anything flashy or speaks everything we want it to say, and it never works out, it will always destroy the person inside.

I love that line so much too. And it really is amazing how relevant it is today if you consider how that line can relate to modern technology like smartphones and social media and how that technology somehow continues to drive us even farther apart. The fact that the song was written decades before that technology even existed really makes the line feel almost prophetic to me.

I am a huge fan of the original version by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. I have always said, if you want to cover a classic you have to bring something different to the table. Disturbed certainly did an excellent job of that here. Their version of this perfectly compliments David Draimans vocals, his vocals are atmospheric and haunting on this version.

I am old enough to have heard the original version when released. Always loved it , but the cover by The Disturbed is astounding. It has "connected people "! This 64 year old white woman from the South Coast of England, agrees with the sentiments you were expressing! A very powerful message for us all.

This song has a broader meaning than just emotional relationships between individuals. It has a more social/political context. The 'silence' can be understood to be silence in the face of injustice or ignorance, and how we contribute to the problem(s) by our silence. Note how the prophets are writing on tenement halls and on subway walls. Who writes in those places? People with no other voice typically. It's a warning against complacency and worshiping the things we make up..

VERY well said. If we don't learn to listen to those around us, we are doomed as a people and, quite possibly, the human race. Injustice and inequality rampant, and if nothing changes, we will all pay the price. The powers that be already have capabilities of mutually assured destruction. Sooner or later someone will push that button unless we all learn to live together in harmony.

I have listened to dozens and dozens of Sound of Silence covers, but never like this one. Vibrant, intense, angry, emotional. Every time I listen to it I get chills, the best cover ever for me!

This is hands-down the best version of the song that will ever be sung by anyone. In my opinion, of course...

If you are going to react then you should not talk over the performance and miss major components of the performance. Hit pause, talk, rewind 5 seconds, and then hit play. I like these young men and their efforts to grow. They are young and learning. I affectionately call them puppies because they have such youthful enthusiasm that will turn into adult level maturity. I love watching them grow from where they were 1 year ago to where they are now. We all grow.

I agree for the most part. There are some great covers out there, but most fall short. This version by Disturbed is one of, if not my favorite cover ever! I never knew Dave’s voice was so beautiful until I heard this. One of the most powerful voices out there.

I think you boys have figured out this song quite well. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to try and dig into the song and find it's meaning without dismissing it just because you didn't understand it the first time. It takes courage to admit when you don't understand something. It takes more courage to research and find understanding. You also did this research together and discussed it until you all had an understanding of the song. I agree that the visuals in this video are amazing, and go hand-in-hand with the song. Not only is this considered one of the best covers of all time, but the singer is also a classically trained singer.

I also want to say, I recently asked my 85 y/o mother (who was a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan) to listen to this version of this song. Three days later, she is still talking about it. She loved it and what she took from Disturbed's version as many other have as well, frustration over not heeding the original warning so eloquently laid before us.

The part that always gets me is “hear my words that I might teach you, take my arm that I might reach you”. Damn man.

His voice is incredible

What i like so much about this remake is the way it unfolds. It starts with one person singing calmly and one instrument playing, and over the course of the song, everything increases but the speed. More instruments join in, the volume increases and the intensity increases. These changing dynamics in volume and intensity and real instruments is something that has gotten rare outside of classical music.

I really, really appreciate you making a legit attempt to understand the meaning of the song!!

The live version of this song is a must. The singer was classically trained. I read that in the live version, David was sick with fever which is why he was sitting down. Pay attention to the audience and how quiet they are during the song.

This is a song written by Simon & Garfunkel in the mid-60s before cell phones and Technology. Very prophetic and how we all walk around mindlessly with our phones. I remember hearing the song in junior high at a school dance...

Good commentary, gentleman. I first really listened to the words of this song back in the early 1970s in a high school English class. Thank you, Mr. Jewett. In an instant I realized this song was poetry, set to music. It is beautiful and sad at the same time. It spoke to us yesterday, it speaks to us today. Timeless.

This is how music should be listened. Understand the artist, the writer, the meaning, the time. Be in the moment. Music should be an experience. Love these guys for bribing that back.

It just speaks to the brilliance of Simon & Garfunkel. This almost 60 year old song is as relevant today as it was when it was written. I really the Disturbed version of Sound of Silence. I may actually prefer the Pentatonix cover. But in the end the version I cherish most is the original by Simon & Garfunkel. That is the original soundtrack of my life. But for the younger generation I am thrilled they can be introduced to a brilliant song in a way that resonates best with them and their time. And I am ecstatic that these young me for once just sat in silence and listened. No horsing around. They listened. They will remember this song and they will share it with their friends. Hallelujah.

David Draiman of Disturbed has one beautiful voice. The different levels and emotions in it. Amazing rendition of the song.

I get chills every time I hear this. One of the best remakes ever. The strength in Draiman's vocals are unmatched.

I grew up on the original from Simon & Garfunkel. But this version brought new life to it and truly helped me fully feel it. When Simon & GRfunkel heard this version, Paul Sinon reached out to tell David Drainman (the lead singer) that this version was his favorite. Please do more Disturbed. They are a phenomenal band. Also, if you ever watch the version of this song that Fisturbed does on Conan, please know he Sand that with 100 degree fever just getting over the flu. It was still incredible. The guy in the black shirt with green print on it, was very attentive throughout the entire video. I really enjoyed watching him as listening to the song. My son spent 13 years in the Marine Corp and did 3 tours and now he is a Deputy Sheriff and he plays this song and when I hear this song I think of him and all he has been through. If you think about the elevator effect, where many ppl stay quiet despite being close together, it shows how we often overlook opportunities to be a part of a community, even if the community only lasts a few minutes. The potential impacts we can have on each other, if we just listen and share, are important to our individual and social selves.

This song has always communicated how it feels to be alone in public places (school, work, other) where it's so loud with friends when you're the only one alone. That we create reality everyday by what we say & what we do to one another. And whether you listen to the bible, or you must face inevitabilities even those who know nothing about the bible know are coming in the future, that truth is the same, regardless

I am So Happy you all experienced what I grew up with! ✌🏽 This song came out a year after I was born, it is 59 years old. It is my mission to remind those now of what is being forgotten and that is, someone had a Dream 60 years ago. Watching you all listen and get into this song brought tears to this old man's eyes along with hair on my arms standing up. Us Grandparents had it goin on! Give Peace One More Chance!

I love how they researched the meaning of "the words of a prophet..." How prophetic do we see those words now? In particular in light of social media in general and the last few years with so many usual meeting places, even churches, being shut down because of the pandemic.

I very nearly cried when I first heard that song on the radio in my car ,that voice and that masterpiece of music ...that hurt me right in the feels ...

I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel as well, their music was light and gentle, easy listening and you could understand and sing all the words. As time progressed, I learned to understand what was being sung so when Disturbed did a remake it blew me away!! My heart sat in my throat and I got goose bumps, almost made me cry it was so beautiful. I applaud you guys for taking the time to listen to this song, it has great meaning to a lot of people, something all generations could learn from. Bravo to you!!

Tenements are basic apartments. So, consider the squalor of subways and hundreds of ppl squashed together in apartment buildings with tiny rooms and you get the idea. Tenements are usually in big crowded cities, usually for low-rent and are/were horrible places to live. So the words of the prophets, whomever they were, tried to reach the poorest with a message to listen to each other. No matter our place in this world, we need communication and each other. Life is a gift. We need to remind each other of that. Loved your reaction, spectacular!!

The meaning gives the song such a deeper insight to the song and what is being spoken about. The prophecy of this song is scary.

Regardless of how you interpret the song's meaning... this remake is so intense. David Draiman has a powerful voice that evokes the emotion of this song so beautifully!

I was born in 1959 but I didn't really know Simon and Garfunkels meaning to the song then. It was written during the Vietnam War and also the assassination of President Kennedy which was part of the reason behind the song. I honestly feel the words through Disturbed's version and I get it now. Gives me chills everytime I hear it. With everything that's going on in the world today, you'd think it was just written. Hello from Colorado USA. 56 now and love the original, of course,... I mean who could write the poetry of lyrics like Simon and Garfunkel? But I agree the Disturbed rendition is needed and meaningful for our time. I agree the anger makes the point that we did not heed the rendition of 1964. So what choice shall humanity make now?

This was an Incredible cover,,Where the Singer's Raw Emotion Comes out to where you can feel it,.. more than just hear it....Last Great Example of that I Saw, was Johnny Cash when he Covered The Nine Inch Nails song " Hurt ". Even Trent Reznor lead singer of NiN said Johnny Made that song his, when he poured all the Pain of his life into it. You didn't listen to Cash singing that song.....You Felt it...Straight to the heart.

Disturbed is badass! They have done three remakes of 70s and 80s songs. They did this one, they did Shout by Tears for Fears, and Land Of Confusion by Genesis.

This is a song speaking of where our world is headed. A dystopian world where we all live in silence. The water that divides the singer from the writer, suggesting they cannot reach each other because we went too far. The boat in the end is the writers coming across to join with the musicians. He starts out gentle and slow. Each verse picking up time and momentum. Anger growing through the words, that people just don’t hear. To where we are; reduced… to silence. A powerful message with insight into our reality. This is where we are going. I hope, I pray we are not on a run away train. Covid was all the dystopian life I ever want to know.

Down with the Sickness and Stricken are my favorite Disturbed songs.... Excellent.

And if these words were true almost 60 years ago, how much more today? This cover is very powerful, much more relevant today too…

I love that you guys took the time to look into the meaning of the lyrics. At 61 years of age, I remember the original version of this by Simon and Garfunkel but Disturbed sang it with such a build up of crescendo it gives me chills every time I hear it.

Im happy that you took the time to truly appreciate and understand the lyrics and how relevant they were in 1964 and still today.

This always gives me goosebumps, I remember the first time I heard it, I was blown away, it still blows me away...

I liked how they broke it down and were building on each other's thoughts and input from the web, and I felt like they almost had it ---- then they went off the rails at the end about the significance of neon. They forgot it was written in 1964 and that neon technology meant something different than it does today. They thought it was referring to putting down your cell phone and talking to each other. Which is exactly what the neon god would be referencing if the song was written today. But back then the "neon god they made" is refering to TV, which was the technology that sucked up people's time and focus back then. Today it is the cell phone. I just wanted to see the guys make that connection. I loved the guy in the back who was rocking out to the song. Maybe he's secretly a metal-head. Good music transcends time and people. 🤘 This is one of the best remakes of a song ever.

This song was written in the 60s exactly for your generation. Sound of silence = texting, learning from Facebook. People are not actually getting out and talking. Neon signs he made = computer screens cell phones, millennials don't go out and hang out with other and can't interact socially (snowflakes) because they do not know how to interact. Words of prophets = the truth to come is often harbored in the hearts and minds of the disenfranchised minorities (thus graffiti or hidden underground so to say amongst the few that are wise enough to see it coming or fortunate enough not to be distracted by modern world notions of self importance and wants, money, fame etc...). This song is a warning and foreboding as the greatest societies through time always turn upon themselves and self destruct. Modern society and culture is so distracting that the real things that matter (family, community, morals, caring, etc) are overlooked and being replaced with engineered chaos. Garfunkel wrote it in the 60s but Disturbed gave it a new power and ominous truth. Put your devices away at home. Eat meals together at the table. Play board games instead of watching several TVs in separate rooms. Own one tv and watch shows together with a bowl of stove popped popcorn and some KoolAid. Go to community functions and participate as a whole family (blood or friends). Please pay attention to the children😢 and take them fishing, bike riding or to the library and sit in a beanbag and read to them; something. My 3 year old granddaughter loves to take her toy shovel and help me fill in gopher holes.

The gospel is Love...To Love one another and lift one another up. We are further from that than we have ever been.

This was one of my father's favorite songs. We played this version at his funeral when he passed. To this day it's bittersweet to my heart when I hear it.

I remember when the original by Simon and Garfunkel came out, but I get goosebumps EVERY time I hear this version, and it's so spot on for today's society.

His voice in this song gives me chills! He has mastered the ability to do that heavy, gritty singing without damaging his vocals! If you watch this a few times there's more you can see that's missed at first.

Guys, you can be in a crowded room full of people, & be the lonliest person on earth. Unless we are communicating, either verbally or through body language- looking & catching eyes, smiling, or just saying hi, unless we reach out to one another, u are basically being ignored. Years ago, if u ran out of sugar, u could always tap ur neighbour up to lend some. Nowadays, many of us don't even know our neighbours, to be able to do that. Now through even more technology, we isolate ourselves even further. Simon & garfunkle (original) warned we were heading that way, & gently sang pleading for change. The mighty voice of disturbed screamed his frustration at the fact we are still not listening. If we don't hear what is being said, the silence can be deafening. Sadly, old enough to remember the original, but not too old to love Disturbs version!! Love it.

What I always get from this song is the fact that we as humans seem to put blinders on to what other humans are experiencing. If they do not look like us, speak like us , warship like us we pass the right on by even if they are hurting… if we remain “Silent” instead of using our collective voice to help other “humans” then we become the cancer… “The Sound Of Silence is deafening”. Red, Blue, Black, White… we are all on this big round rock taking laps around the sun together… So Tech down, eyes up, wake up “ya this white boy said it”. Treat everyone with respect and kindness… embrace our differences. The world is full of amazing people don’t miss out on an opportunity to meet or try something new. “We all do better if we ALL do better”

Excellent observation. At least 7 generations of my scottish farmer ascendants knew this, & countless generations of cherokees who married into that same family tree. At least those scotsmen were a type of white man more concerned with being good custodians of the soil, the crops, & domestic animals than the sadly all too common whites who worshipped money, putting it & land acqusition first in life above all else Its in my bones. Goes all goes all the way back to the first grade: 'What is it inside so many of my classmates & teachers that makes them so restless, discontent, angry? Dont we make this world the way it is by what we do everyday? Why do they mistreat each other, when they dont have to?' At 7 years old I didnt have the vocabulary to express that so precisely, of course. But in that wordless way of childhood, thats exactly what I thought

I have seen joyous wonders with my own eyes that I could not find the verbiage to explain if I lived to be as old as the hills, and I have seen, and sleep with at times, visions of human suffering that I would not wish on my most hated of enemies. OMG, the tissues I've 🤧 gone through since I discovered David Draiman and Disturbed performing their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on April 29, 2024. That day I have to believe my spirit 🙏 guides (out of the blue) first led me to a cover video by Dan Vasc singing "Amazing Grace" which was phenomenal 👏 and then to the cover video of Disturbed and David Draiman singing this most POWERFUL, EMOTIONAL 😂rendition of Simon and Garfunkels "The Sound of Silence". I'm 75 and was 15 when they released one of the most popular classic songs of our time during the 60's. It is amazing how relevant it is today, actually I feel it is even more relevant than ever in so many different ways. I've spent days since listening and seeing, you notice I didn't say viewing, the many channel hosts and each of their reactions and have 😢 almost every time. It's funny that more males have gotten teary-eyed than females, just an observation. Thanks from Diane
