Hey guys. Craig's 19 year old son was away with friends on a river tubing trip and was drowned. Craig wrote this to help himself deal with it. He recorded it and then said he wasn't going to sing it again. A couple of his Nashville buddies told him he could help a lot of people with it. Then the audiences started asking for it at his concerts. So he started doing it again. I have seen him do it on several TV shows and also on the Grand Ole Opry. I have never seen him get through it without breaking down a little bit. In fact there is a video on KZread of him doing it at the Opry and the entire song the guys in his band are just watching him to make sure he is okay. That's family. Craig is quite a guy. He served I think 8 years in the army as a combat medic. After he got out him and one of his kids were driving somewhere and they drove by a house fire. He ran up to see if he could help. The FD wasn't there yet and someone said there were still people in the house. He went in and carried 2 people out. (Kids I think). He has another video you should check out. Great message for the times we are going through now. It's called "This ain't nothin'. Stay safe and well. Peace.

It's true that it does help others that are going through the same thing. I lost my son to a motorcycle accident three years ago on 09/21 and though I don't wish anyone to join this club I unwillingly became a member of, it helps to know there are others who understand.

Just a minor correction. And please don't misunderstand my comments as being hostile. I admire Craig and tear up every time I see his video. Craig served with the Army's 101st and 82 Airborne. He tried out for the Rangers but was injured in the selection process and didn't make it. Regardless, I very much appreciate his service.

Our son is considering working with a company to develop wheeled and tracked vehicles for the military or teaching high school history so he can coach sports too. If you want to know about the evolution of tanks, anything about world war 1 and 2 especially, how men like Hitler and Stalin rose to power, etc just ask our teenager. One of the things that always strikes me about this is the first verse. I feel like he's saying the rest of the world has moved on but he just can't. He makes excuses to not go out then "turns the radio back on and sits back down". That's major depression. Just breaks my heart.

To add another amazing quality to Craig & his wife....this son that he is referring to was a child that they adopted at a fairly young age. Gerry came home from college for the break and told his Mom that he broke his chain that he wore with the Saint Michael pendant on it and he would like to get a new chain bc he felt it's security. His Mom hadn't yet made it to the jewelry store to get a chain and now she holds some "what if" type guilt. Was so sad to see the pain in their faces as they gave that interview on one of the tv talk shows.

I worked for a woman looking after her horses and cows. She had a wretched old pool. My youngest son would go with me to work. He was not even three. I went to tell my employer I was done and she kept talking and talking. Found my boy floating in the pool, not breathing no heartbeat. I pulled him out, started working on him and God blessed me. He started making little sounds, I thought it was his body outgassing and he was gone but he started to breath, opened his eyes. The paramedics had a hard time finding us but after 45 minutes they arrived. Took us to the hospital. Nurses kept telling me I'd done everything right. All I could think was if I'd done every thing right we wouldn't be there. Spent the day in the NICU with my beautiful boy bouncing around, chattering and laughing. I apologized to the nurses for the ruckus, they told me it was wonderful to see a little one who was going to be OK. He's an engineer and engaged now. I thank God daily for letting me keep him.

Yes his son drowned. He woke up in the middle of night and God told him to write this song, half way through he was going to go back to bed but god told him to finish it. The first time he performed it was on the Grand Ole Opry . As he walked off the stage Ricky Skaggs was standing there and Craig said, I can perform that song again. Ricky told him he had to so he would help others. He contacted Blake Shelton and Blake started having it played everywhere even on Kelly who of course was crying. Blake showed up to surprise him. Was a beautiful sone, written by a beautiful man about a beautiful love between him and his son.

When I was a Soldier stationed at Fort Sill, Craig Morgan with Jason Aldean and Dirks Bentley performed a concert on the 4th of July for the troops. It was a part of the Army concert tour. Me and my friend Erin had been at the lake all day and missed the concert. Afterwards, we went to our favorite little hole in the wall bar called Guys & Dolls. After an hour or so, me Erin and one other person was in the bar, when about 15 people came in. It happened to be Jason Aldean, Dirks Bentley, some of their entourage and of course Craig Morgan. I sat closest to Jason Aldean and Craig sat on the opposite end. After exchanging pleasantries, Craig Morgan heard that I was in the Army and that we had served in the same unit once upon a time. They stayed for about 2 hours and me and Erin danced to their songs while they say at the bar, it was so surreal. Craig even bought me a shot of Jack. It was when we still had flip phones....it was amazing and he was such a down to earth guy

Loss of a child transcends all pain a parent can experience. It's not natural for a parent to bury a child. The love for a child is greater than any other emotion a person can feel. I was blessed to watch my son being born and I thank God every day he is with me. My wife had to bury her only child, my step son , at the young age of 24. This song especially the second verse is her. It's been 5 years and I have watched her in a pain that nothing can ease. It doesnt matter your sex, race, age whatever, love bonds all of us together and death may take the physical body but the memories are with us forever. Love your children, hold them tight and never take them or their lives for granted. You just never know what fate has in store. God bless you and your channel. Toodles

My nephew was killed in March in a drug dispute. His sister played this song for their dad on what would have been Zack's 27th birthday. Every word of this song describes the man my brother is. He lost his son, his best friend to heroin addiction 6yrs ago. 8 months ago, thst young man permanently lost the battle. The family finds peace that he is no longer fighting his demons and has found peace, and i know my brother listens to this song often

Thank you so much for reacting to my recommendation! This is a true story and here’s a link to an interview where he talks a little about it kzread.info/dash/bejne/jJenptl8dNWqfps.html. I first heard this song when Blake Shelton sent it out on Twitter. My son is in the military and I couldn’t help but imagine myself in the same situation one day and how this song would give me some comfort. The song just brings out a lot of emotion for me.

I'm really glad Craig had those friends who helped him and told him to share the song. I'm also very thankful for Blake for sharing it to his followers and even telling people to get the song higher than his on the charts, it was wonderful watching him push his fans to stream the song and get it to number one, it was very beautiful to see. It's an amazing song so I am very glad so many people got to witness his performance and hear his voice and his story.

Craig and Karen had been Jerry’s foster parent and then got to adopt him. He said this song was given to him by God. He couldn’t sleep he couldn’t cry any more and the words just kept going through his head so he got up and went down to his studio in the basement and put pen to paper and didn’t stop til he knew how it was going to be done. The Uncle Sam he is talking about is the military not IRS. They have set up a little shop there in town that sells all home made things and I am pretty sure the sales have some of the proceeds going to help others. Y’all really need to watch the Kelly Clarkson show where she interviews him and then he sings this song but also go to Blake Shelton and look up where he asked everyone to vote for this song instead of one of his own songs that was dominating the play lists at the time.

100% real. His son passed away in a tubing accident at the age of 19. Craig sat up one night and wrote this song. He performed it live on the grand ol opery, i recommend watching that video. He swore that was the only time he would ever sing it live, but a fellow artist Ricky Skaggs told him no man you have to do that song, people out there need to hear this.

He lost his in a very odd boating accident. He was out tubing with a friend. Their tubes collided, and he and his friend flew off the tubes and sank into the dark water. Although it was reported by the rescue team that both were wearing life jackets, only his friend returned to the surface. They searched for nearly 24 hours, before they found him, still wearing his life vest.

On July 10, 2016, Craig Morgan's 19-year-old son, Jerry Greer, was killed in a tubing accident. In the aftermath of his loss, Morgan couldn't bring himself to record any new music. Instead, he turned to his woodworking hobby while processing his grief. This heart-rending song, released on August 30, 2019, is his first single since the death of his son.

On my fireplace mantle sits my sons Bible, my service pistol, and a sealed bottle of Jack Daniels. I lost my son to an IED in Afghanistan 3 weeks after I retired from a 35 year army career. We met in Germany for a day as I rotated home and he deployed to Afghanistan. This morning I was listening to this song and pulled down his Bible. In the inside he had written " one day I will tell my dad he's my hero". My son is my hero. The pistol is now packed away and the bottle of whiskey has been poured out. The Bible sits on the mantle alone now. God I miss my son.

The lyrics here are very simple but sometimes simple can be the most effective. When I hear this song, I can picture him putting down the phone and going back to his pain. I can picture him getting up at 5am and making coffee. He's obviously in a ton of pain but I've heard him interviewed and he's used it for a purpose and learned to rely on God more. And I'm sure God's used his story to inspire others giving them an example how to handle loss. The live version really gives me them eye allergies for sure
