Robin (on the left) sang a lot of the leads in the pre-R&B/Disco days, the '60s and early '70s. He had a distinctive quavering voice. Robin and Maurice (on the right) were twins, born in 1949 (both deceased now). Barry was born in 1946. They started singing as a group when the twins were 12 or 13.

They started singing as early as 9 and 6, and then as the BGs when Barry was 12 and the twins 9. There’s a video of them singing live on Australian tv in 1960.

Just to add some to DP's info; 1955-to early 1958, they performed as The Rattlesnakes (the twins would turn 6 Dec. 22, 1955). 1958, they briefly performed as Wee Johnny Hayes & the Blue Cats, when they caught the attention of Bill Gates & Bill Goode. 1958, Gates renamed them BGs (after noticing all the "BG" initials in the room; Gill Gates, Bill Goode, Barbara Gibb & Barry Gibb). The name BGs evolved into Bee Gees & took on the "Brothers Gibb" meaning.

Barry and Robin each took lead vocals in different songs. Maurice was harmonies and played piano or guitar, much of the time.

This is one of my favorite Bee Gees' songs. But maybe Gene Pitney had the answer way back in the day. In his song, "Only Love Can Break A Heart" he says, "only love can break a heart; only love can mend it again". BTW, that would be a good song to react to as well.

Robin starts the lead vocals then Barry in his normal tone finished along with those beautiful harmonies of the 3 brothers. Barry and Robin wrote this song after the group got back together after a break up. Al Green covered "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart",so soulfully. Brilliant.

This is an early Bee Gees song. They had two distinct eras: one as a so-called "baroq, 1967-73 ... and one as a disco group for the rest of the 70s and early 80s. What both eras have in common is great singing and harmonies ... and top-notch productions.

The Bee Gees really captured the sound of two separate eras in pop music... great balladeers in the easy listening 60's and of course their domination of disco in the 70's... they were able to do it because of the ability to write great songs and their incredible vocal talents. I actually like the early version of the Bee Gees, 'I Started A Joke' & 'Lonely Days' were huge hits. Overlooked disco era gems (on reaction channels) are 'Nights On Broadway' and 'Fanny Be Tender'.

You're right, the one on the left started the song. That's Robin. He has a very distinct voice. Barry is still singing much of the lead . There's a live version of them in Las Vegas singing this song. They are older in that video, they do a great live version . Al Green did a famous cover of How Do You Mend a Broken Heart. This was one of Michael Jackson's favorite songs. Barry has talked about in interviews how Jackson would call him sometimes & wanted him to sing it to him over the phone.

All 3 brothers (Robin, Barry, Maurice) were great vocalists. Maurice(on the right) sang very little as the "lead" singer. But Robin (on the left) sang "lead" on a lot of their early songs. You should check out "I've Gotta Get a Message to You", "I Started a Joke" or "Massachusetts" to get a good dose of Robin as the "lead" singer. I like all of their songs, but the early songs are my favorites. The ones I mentioned before as well as songs like "Words", "To Love Somebody" "New York Mining Disaster", "Spicks and Specks" and many, many more. You really need to do a Bee Gees Marathon. Love it, Ya'll

His voice just touches your heart. One of my favorites is “Lonely Days”… its full of surprises! You should also check out their cover of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”. They’ve also written hundreds of songs that have also been sung by other artists. Unbelievably talented.

"How can you mend a broken heart" was one of 2 songs (the other was "Lonely Days") that Barry and Robin wrote together after the BeeGees had split up for about 1.5 years. This was their first collaborative effort again after getting back together. The first verse was sung by Robin, the second by Barry. The harmonies of course by all three brothers. You just don't recognize their voices because they had not begun singing in falsetto yet, lol. The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988. The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born. Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1966. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin'. From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). You should react to the 1979 live version of Stayin' Alive, too kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaKdurWhZ9m9gqw.html Other great songs to analyze: great album tracks from the 1979 Spirits Having Flown album, the title song: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iXyTzJtplqavm5c.html, the outrageously beautiful song Reaching Out kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJp8t7VufcmWYLQ.html. From their Still Waters album, Smoke and MIrrors: kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4ht2LSBg7q0ks4.html. From the 1960's I've gotta get a message to you kzread.info/dash/bejne/dXVopaundNG6m5s.html.

I was watching Barry Gibbs doing his first solo performance after his brothers Robin and Maurice had passed away. He started singing How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, in front of about 1,000 people, and when it was time for his brothers to join in, he broke down, and missed a few of the words. He finished singing with tears in his eyes. That was tough to watch, since I grew up listening to them sing as a group, and he was missing his brothers. He got a standing ovation for about 10 minutes.

Now that you've experienced Robin Gibb's amazing lead vocals, I highly highly recommend you listen next to "Nights on Broadway": please check out the performance from the Midnight Special so you can bask in his voice, live! He sounds sooo good on that. It's wonderful hearing the Bee Gees singing live. Love your reactions, you guys rock!

That's Robin doing the lead on this song. They did take turns singing lead more in the beginning of their career but Barry ended up taking lead more basically because he was so damn good but they all contributed which made them so great!

This is by far my favorite Bee Gees tune. For so many reasons.. it is one if their best melodies and arrangements, but it touches so many of my youthful memories and crushes. It us the very essence and definition of my childhood. AND I CAN STILL FEEL THE BREEZE THAT RUSHES THRU THE TREES. And I am still trying to mend my broken heart.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Bee Gees forever.

Only time can mend a broken heart. Robin started the song (lead) then Barry takes the lead. This is early Brothers Gibb song; i like their early music. They do this song live, do look it up, you will like.

Yes, Robin sang the lead here. The reason why you think of Barry as THE lead singer is because their biggest hits were in the 70s. When Barry started using his falsetto voice they were selling more records. Barry tried to share the spotlight, as lead singer, with Robin, but Robin insisted Barry keep singing in falsetto and being the lead singer, because it was a formula for success in Robin's eyes. And, as Barry stated, that is what Robin was all about, selling more records. So that is how the falsetto became a dominant theme for the Bee Gees and why Barry was lead singer in the 70s.

🥰🎶🥰🎶 I think Robin is singing lead at the first of the song. He’s on the left. Maurice is on the right, and the were fraternal twins.

What can you say, its another great song by The Bee Gees! Al Green did his own version of this song and I believe it is just as good. Lots of folks who love Al Green's version didn't even know The Bee Gees (not only wrote this song but) sang it too.
