@@jonathanross149 They wouldn't play black music full stop. David Bowie was interviewed by one of the bigwigs from MTV in '83 and he turned the tables on him by questioning him about why they didn't play black artists music. Worth a watch, just such for "david bowie MTV interview" if you're interested.

@@jonathanross149 Yes, this interview happened just before the album Thriller and its accompanying singles/music videos were released. MJ being so popular is what essentially forced MTV to start featuring black artists more prominently. But in the first couple of years of MTVs existence....very few black artists were ever shown, and the ones that were (like Prince and Stevie Wonder for example) were generally shown in the early hours of the morning when most people were sleeping. Goodman (the guy who was interviewing Bowie) was essentially saying he only wanted to play music that appealed to the biggest demographic (white people) and that he thought that white people "weren't ready" and "would be scared" of black music, and they wanted to play music that teenagers could look up to. And Bowie essentially just said, there's black teenagers in America too, do you not think they need someone to look up to as well? It really did not paint Goodman or MTV in a good light looking back.
