First Time Car Camping - Big MESS Up
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
After 8 months of prepping for this with 4Runner mods and getting the right gear, I finally made it out Car Camping for the first time. I spent 2 nights at Stoneman Lake in the Coconino National Forrest dispersed camping near my cousin's RV and some of his friends who joined up later. I certainly learned a lot and will be changing a few things. You can see where I messed up at the end of the video. No words necessary!

@@AZOverland2017 LOL, yes, the wallet drain has already started!
I locked myself out of my 4Runner on a trip a couple of years ago. I don't remember for sure how I did it, but I think I took the key out of the ignition and set it on the console. Then I locked the door from the inside as I was stepping out of the car. As soon as I shut the door I realized the key was still in the car! Now I wear a spare key around my neck.

Pretty much what I did as well. Except the key was next to me in the back where my bed was. I think when I put up the rear window with my camping mod it automatically locks the doors. Yes, I have a plan B in place now as well
Pretty good first camp!!!

Yes, the cabin is something we would have only discovered by using the electric bike to explore the surrounding areas. Thanks for watching!

Poop tent FTW! I got one too
Get yourself a realtor combo lock box and put your extra key in it then lock it to your tow hitch or roof rack while camping. This offers great piece of mind especially when camping away from anyone.

Great idea!
As a fellow Gen 5 4runner owner, how did you happen to lock yourself out?
@AZOverland2017

Ha, still haven't quite figured it out. If you watched the video where I installed the camping mod, it may have something to do with that. I think when I rolled the window up with the switch mounted in the rear, it may have locked the doors and when I got out on the morning and closed the door, it was all over. My spare keys were also in the vehicle. Weird thing is, when I got home, I noticed the 4Runner, on 2 occasions, automatically locked all the doors about 60 seconds after I exited the vehicle. It hasn't happened since. Also, that guy was actually pressing on the Unlock button on the door panel with that wire hanger, and it was not unlocking the doors. The button was dead. Need to figure it out still. Lesson is, the spare keys will always remain outside the vehicle from now on
just a tip, i'm finding out through my overland trips, less is more, invest in some mollie panels they will help store a lot of gear without carrying so many boxes. good start though. be safe out there.

Thanks! Since this trip I've been out many times and continually experimenting in what works best for me. I definitely lightened it up some since. I also play with different scenarios and my packing needs; short or longer trips, weather, and if I decide to go minimalist or not. Thanks for your feedback
How did you finally get the door open? I know that in my 4Runner manual it explains how the car will auto lock itself after 60 seconds. On page 551 it says you can customize that auto locking feature and turn it off.

I had to break the rear vent window (I did a video on replacing this glass). When I reached my hand in to unlock it, it just kept locking on me. I finally was fast enough to unlock and pull the door handle immediately and got in. The weird thing is, my 4Runner never auto locked before. I think what happened was, when I rolled the rear hatch window back up with the switch I installed in the back, it also locked all the doors and set the alarm. The back door was already open so i just exited and closed the door not realizing all doors were locked. I just never expected that when we were able to push down on the "unlock" button on the door panel with the wire that the truck would keep re-locking itself.
Awesome video! Do you mind sharing the table you used that you put over your wheel? Thanks!

Granite coated. I'm not aggressive when using metal utensils, which isn't often. I am still using that pan daily, 2 years later with very little visible wear or scratches. Teflon non stick will not fare the same. Thanks for your comment!
