First Time Camper Series - Understanding your RV safety devices

0:00 Your Safety!
Your safety and that of your loved ones are very important to us. All Keystone RVs come equipped with smoke, carbon monoxide, and propane gas detectors as well as fire extinguishers, GFCI, and escape windows. Our Frist Time Camper’s series continues with Matt and Bart sharing information on the safety devices located in your RV. They illustrate steps to maintain, test, and clean on a regular basis.
0:38 Smoke Detectors
First in the line of safety devices are the smoke detectors. They are typically powered by a 9-volt battery and will notify with a chirp when ready to be replaced. Today’s smoke detectors come with an expiration date on the manufacturer’s label, be sure to replace them when the date is exceeded. Clean and remove any dust and avoid spraying aerosols nearby.
1:00 CO Detector
Next is the carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide does not have any smell, so it is important to understand the purpose of this device. The detector will notify if any gas appliances, vehicle engines, generators, and other fuel-burning products may be malfunctioning or misused. For continued safety, verify the detector’s light and alarm work before each trip and remind children to never play with the alarm.
1:52 Propane gas detector
Propane Gas Leak detector (LP detector) is permanently mounted near the floor, as propane gas is heavier than air and will settle to the floor. The LP detector is powered by the RV battery and/or 12-volt system of the camper. It is important to remember-if power is disconnected the LP detector will NOT operate. Be sure to air out RV thoroughly after delivery and when cleaning, as some household products may trigger the alarm, even when no propane is detected.
2:48 Fire Extinguisher
Where is that darn fire extinguisher? As standard equipment, the fire extinguisher will be located near the main entry door, however, some campers may have multiple extinguishers. It is important that all campers know where they are located. Be sure to read the instructions on the canister so you understand how to operate before it is ever needed during an emergency.
3:02 GFCI
Next, we have the GFCI or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlet. As required by the RVIA code, any outlet receptacle that can be exposed to water must be protected with this highly sensitive device. Most receptacles are located in bathrooms, kitchens, exterior, or other outlets that may become exposed. The GFCI is designed to sense the slightest electrical fault and trip prior to any personal injuries.
4:10
Lastly, the escape windows or egress windows are covered. Matt and Bart detail how they are labeled and operated. Be sure to share the location and operation with all campers in your RV.
Cleaning and testing of each device should be done on a regular basis ensuring you have opportunities to Camp Better! For more information on your RV safety devices, review your owner’s manual. There’s no time like the present to get familiar with how to use and properly maintain the safety features of your RV.
