FIRST TASTE OF WINTER - HEAVY RAIN HAIL AND STRONG WINDS -12 WINDCHILL - SUMMIT WILD CAMPING UK
DON’T TRUST THE FORECAST!
A wild camp on the summit of Great End (910m) with two of my Patreon. Harsh unexpected weather of rain, hail and strong winds tested us especially our hands as we struggled to pitch our tents. I took the massive Naturehike Opalus 3 as a base for us to chill (literally) and chat with a beer and it stood up well considering it’s not designed for challenging conditions. I didn’t take a sleeping bag for this one and slept in my PHD Yukon Pullover and Minimus Down Trousers within the PHD Snowline Bivvy which has some built in insulation. Slept warm👌

What a difference a week makes! This morning I’m sat on my sofa reflecting on last weekend and thinking about my next wild camp. Watching a sunrise on a cold clear winters morning brings a sense of joy and peace that’s priceless. I turned to Al while watching the sunrise and said imagine how many people don’t see this! If you’re new into camping or hiking and thinking about wild camping, Al’s got some great videos about what you need to get started. I started watching Al’s videos sat on my sofa and look where I am now! Who knows where this might lead to!! 🤔🗻

Good to hear you chaps swapping stories. First hand experiences shared mean others won't make daft mistakes. Great video !
This is one of my favorite camps. I have watched it a few times. What's interesting is that without a campfire and a cold night, everyone usually retreats to their own bivy bag or small tent. This proves that dividing up a large tent can be a good way to share stories and ideas. It's also interesting how much easier all this looks from home - it's difficult to believe how cold it can be until you're actually out there.

As always, so inspiring! I used to be a rock climber, so mountain walking/scrambling routes were not a problem for me. Very different situation today - overweight and underfit, and joint problems all over the shop. But your videos make me want to learn to walk in the hills again. Start small and gradually put a bit of strength back in the knees! I miss the mountain scenery and the feeling of being safe in a tent whilst it blows a hoolie outside. Thanks again for giving this old outdoorsman a kick in the behind. Love to you and Blue.

Great trip! And some wonderful sights, especially at the top!
I had a hike with that type of weather, and quite unexpected once. We are hiking Mount Rogers in Virginia, USA. We had a 746 meter elevation gain to 1746 meter peak. About a quarter of the way up the weather changed drastically. It was September and we were expecting cool and clear weather. Things shifted and we had the small hail you showed and high winds. We had no tents as we were camping in a shelter on the Appalachian Trail. It had three sides but was unusual in that it had an enclosed loft with a ladder. We were a group of Boy Scouts and leaders. We let the boys sleep in the loft, they barely fit. The two adults (including me) slept in the bottom. The wind was blowing full on into the open end of the shelter! It was cold. Temps dropped to about -7C, not sure of the wind chill. We nearly froze. But we survived and it is one of our best memories! The highest I have camped is 2712 meters at Miranda Camp in Philmont (Boy Scout camp in New Mexico). We hiked from Miranda to Baldy Mountain (3792 meters) and back to Miranda in a loop. Total milage was just over 14 miles, with a stop along the way to resupply with food.

Brilliant Al, camping with mates. Interesting how you slept in down jacket and pants + bivvy and were toasty, do you think that's the way forward? If you are carrying a down jacket and bottoms anyway then it means you can have a lighter sleeping bag. Makes a more adaptable sleep system👍👍👍
I always like to view camping adventures with Heavy Rain, Hail, Strong Winds because I want to see what equipment is used & how the camper coped. Norwegian Xplorer has some nasty weather related videos, same with Jokkmokkguiderna. I'm pretty sure you won't have a stream of water flowing under your tent or have a zipper that unzips this time. Hail stones hurt & there's no avoiding them until your "sheltered". 36:41; Beautiful sunrise. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

Sleeping bag ratings are of course very subjective. I have an OEX Leviathan which I used for 3 winters and was never cold. Slept at -5°C just in Icebreaker 260 weight baselayers and woke up sweating and had to vent. I have woken with the outer covered in condensation without appreciable loss of loft and similarly with the footbox covered in ice. For less than £150 in the regular sales, I don't think it can be beaten. I replaced it with a RAB Neutrino 800 which is in a different league...but also on a different planet pricewise!
