First Take on the Northstar Pearl Canoe

Спорт

This is my first look and paddle in the new Northstar Pearl. This one is StarLite with the Emerald Green inlay in wood trim.
Dimensions of the Pearl:
15’9”
2” Rocker bow and stern
~36 lbs in StarLite alum trim (wood adds 2 lbs)
21” bow and stern depth, 12.5” mid depth
35” max width (33” at the 4” water line)
I think this canoe might be the perfect day tandem for the situation, or 2 average sizedadults, or soloing with gear or a larger dog. The Pearl just has a wonderful feel on the water.
Visit www.happypaddlin.com to learn more about where to find Northstar Canoes or to support my efforts through purchases of the best straps, stickers and paddling gear around.

Slab sides or Northstar's trademark tumblehome?

Constant flare but does not tumblehome like a Polaris. But slightly lower mid height made it really easy to solo.

Hey great work with the channel. I am 6’4 and 240 looking for a solo boat for lake/river camping. It seems like every canoe I look at is maxed out at not much more weight than I am. What bots do you think I should look at?

Get a Polaris or a Pearl. If center seating a Polaris you can even have them add extra reinforcement. Then, down the road you can think Phoenix or NW Solo!

@@HappyPaddlin am I too big for a Phoenix or north wind?

Have a guy your exact size that at first didn’t feel comfortable in the northwind solo, bought a Polaris to paddle solo and now a couple years later is all ready for Northwind Solo, and has just placed an order for one. It will have no problem, floating you, just really matters about your skill set and how comfortable you will be in it.

Hi liked the video! How does this boat compare to a b16? Thanks !

Good question. I think the B16 is probably the better river tool (deeper, more performance) whereas the Pearl has such a great design for a day on the lake Solo or tandem. I will order Pearls real light and B16s I mostly sell in BlackLite or IXP.

Hi! Love your videos! So which canoe do you prefer? The pearl or polaris? I plan on using my canoe with one or 2 80 pound kidss plus me. Also, i would like to go solo from time to time.Do you have a preference of gunwales material? Thanks for your help!

Thanks for watching, more to come soon after a little break this fall. The cool thing about the Polaris for you and your two kids is you could get a kneeling thwart and be in the middle while they are bow and stern. In the Pearl, one would be on the floor but that’s ok too. I love the wood and if you have indoor storage and the extra $ I don’t think you will regret that at all! Soft in the hands, gorgeous when capturing memories and hits the heart strings when paddling. But, Northstar’s Aluminum trim is second to none being that it is two piece (inwale and outwale) vs a lot of other one piece aluminum trims by others. If I were taking 2 of my kids and also soloing as you mention is think I would get a bit more versatility from the Polaris but don’t get me wrong, already have a new Pearl ready to go for my me and my family too. A bit spoiled that way I guess! 😀🛶

@HappyPaddlin thank you for your insight. I have a quick follow up question. Does the Polaris feel more tippy or are both the Polaris and Pearl equally stable. We are not very experienced paddlers. Thanks!!!

They both have that very smooth transition edge to bottom so you will adapt to either I think. I honestly think the differences are negligible but they do have a little different feel under you. On paper one would probably say the Pearl presents a wider footprint at any given weight.

Thank you for the reply. After watching your video about the Pearl, I think I am leaning towards the Pearl. The shorter length is really appealing and it just may fit in my storage shed. Thanks for the recommendation on the wood gunwales. I live surrounded by numerous lakes in Northern Wisconsin, but may have to travel out to you for some paddling instruction. Thanks for all the great videos! You capture very well what paddling is all about.
