First Steps to Making a Huge Bonsai Forest Heirloom for my Grandchildren

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Bonsai is very meaningful, living art. Today, I am working on a tree that will be a part of a giant bonsai forest heirloom that I will pass down to my grandchildren. I have 6 grandchildren so I will create a 6-tree bonsai forest and potentially add more to represent myself and my children. This is going to be a very exciting project, so please follow my progress!

I am glad that you changed the number 6. I am an American who was lucky enough to study Ikebana who explained that we never use 6….Although I am glad that you have six grandchildren, you are truly blessed

My friend and teacher, a high-level Sogetsu artist, told me that past 5 elements she doesn't pay a lot of attention to the "odd number" dictum. I am all for artistic balance, but not so much for superstition or cultural dictates.

@@laddieokelley6095 if it was not in line with the teachings, the value of the final heirloom would lose a lot of its monetary value. for it to keep the value with six you would not need to be a bonsai master but a legend who can allow to go against the rules like creating a myth around the forest and its six trees all part of this artform

Great to make a forest heirloom representation of your Grandchildren and maybe your sons and you and your wife, what a great idea. John Naka was a truly wonderful bonsai artist and a special human being. Looking at the tree now you have dispensed with the foliage you don’t need creates the bare structure of what one is envisioning to be the final design, what I have learnt from you Milton is not to be too prissy about the trees, they are stronger than we think especially all types of Junipers and pines, you can be a bit brutal with them, the important thing is to make sure you leave enough green foliage to maintain the tree. To my mind the bottom branch will probably come off in a future design, I can’t see how it will fit in to a forest design, you don’t want a tree at the edge of the forest being so dominant it will draw the eye away from the main image you are creating. Joe.

That is a good point. Make a forest like a forest! Thanks! And I truly admire John. Does not matter I was Chinese, I am good if I like bonsai. My high school classmate Ernie Kuo was his student and became his close friend. In fact, one of Ernie's CA juniper was a state gift (I believe President Clinton brought to China )as a state gift.

You could always include an extra forest tree for potential family/not family members, not just for more artistically balanced or lucky numbers. Sometimes our families can come to include more people than we think possible. My dad (now aged 95) teaches music and college-level math classes at a women's prison. Almost every Father's Day, my sister and I find that our family has acquired several new grandchildren in their 20's or 30's.

Ok, less is more; I will likely stop at 7; Maybe I will do a elm or a maple tree with many many more trees.

I think that the eye can see the difference between the odds and even numbers when there are just a few trees, (ie you can see the difference between 2 & 3 at a glance) However when the number becomes bigger it's impossible to see whether it's odd or even ! Leaving you free to do what you please.

No, it is going wild in CA and Hawaii, towering to 100’ and makes a mess with leaves that are large and do not decay.

You must understand, your grand children are a descendant of your genes, however one may accept your trees as a gift of treasure, while another will accept it as a gift of burden.
