LS swap it Alex... it would be the best of both worlds... power and a true 80's icon.
The "belts" around the inner door handles are on early cars, Oct '81 and earlier. They were original factory installed and were meant to help shut the door. On later cars they were mounted to the inner door itself as the loop style pieces would commonly fall off when opening or closing the door and you wouldn't even realize it! Mine were looped around when I bought it but I have since modified it to be permanently attached. I got a document that helps with the mod if you are interested I could send it to you

I remember that part from "Back to the future"
I love that Alex thoroughly checks the engine and puts stuff in the cylinders before turning it carefully by hand Too many people on KZread destroy old cars because they throw a battery on it and just let 'er rip, needless to say I don't subscribe to channels that do that. Alex knows his stuff and he treats old technology with the care it needs. This is by far and away my favourite car channel.

Oil changes ranged from $21 to any add-one you may need. PVC valves, air filters, etc. That oil receipt is on par with an oil change and quite possibly an extra thing or two. I worked at a quick lube in the 80s.

22:49 - The belt is from the factory! They found the door handles could be hard to reach when the doors were up, so for early cars, they just looped those straps through the door handles. Later cars had a built-in slot bracket for the straps, but they are supposed to be there!

I think this is the best episode you guys have made. Opening the glove box was quite literally back to the future. And it really does look like you lucked out and found an owner who loved it so much he parked it when he couldn't see enough to drive it, just couldn't let it go... you know he drove that thing carefully. This is a perfect barn find and an iconic piece of both automotive and cinematic history. I'm envious, I wouldn't ever sell it either.
Alex, I am an absolute freak when it comes to nostalgia from the 80s-90s! PLEASE DO A COMPLETE SERIES!! I can't be the only one that wants to shed a tear remembering those beautiful times as a child. When I saw that puff from the tailpipe it literally brought the past to the future. I'd love to have a jar of that scent! Keep it up man because you have the ability to do it. All of the older cars that the regular guy really wanted but just couldn't quite get. You are doing what we wanted to do but never quite got there. Love the videos my friend. It is more important than you can know.

Those straps are factory. When you're sitting in the car and the door struts are working you'll need them to reach and pull down the door. They are rare too as usually they haven't lasted. So cool to see you this excited. What a find!
10 year DeLorean owner here! KJet is a total pain to maintain long term. My recommendation is to do an EFI or Carb conversion eventually. Or a rad engine swap! I installed a 3.5 Ecoboost from a Raptor!
For some reason, when I saw the headlights lit up, it brought a massive smile to my face. What a car. I'd be scared to absolute death of it getting dented somehow.

You might want to still get the cassette deck out and have it serviced. There usually are some rubber belts that need to be replaced and some small shafts to lubricate. I am actually amazed it still worked after all these years!

My theory is that the car didn't sit for 32 years in the barn, it just time travelled from 1991 to now. That would explain why the seller needed non-refundable money upfront - to hire some specialists to make it look dirty and unused as if it sat for for 32 years :) I bet the previous owner is actually a time traveler, the thick glasses are to protect the eyes from the time-travel radiation

Nice work, Alex! As far as the reality of losing your vision and stopping driving because of blindness, I can testify that it really sucks when it happens. I had the same scenario happen to me, as I am now blind, at age 52 (since 46) and had to choose to stop driving before it got too bad. I had a Mk4 VW R32 that was my fun car, and selling it because of my vision loss was one of the hardest reality gut punches I had to work through. Good luck with everything, and enjoy driving! PS- I am not neglected by any means, as I "suggested" to my wife that she get the blue Audi she's always wanted, though I pointed her in the direction of an S4 so I get to ride in it.
This really brings me back! I bought a 1986 Lotus Esprit 3 years ago, sat since 1989. I pulled and sent all my Bosch mechanical injection, warm up regulator etc to get rebuilt. Eventually I found out what was wrong when it was pulled off the road, and after restoration of the items that deteriorated from sitting, it ran!!! I put about 1500 miles on it a year now, I’m at a total of 21,000 miles. Have faith, she can be a reliable little driver!!
Love the fact that your thorough when evaluating a vehicle! Taking precautions might seem tedious but will will always save yourself big problems in the end. Much respect from a fellow car guy!!!
Max, thanks for all your efforts. Definitely a positive contribution to the channel. Alex, thank you for sharing your experiences. This adventure is absolutely a blast. Looking forward to seeing this historic beauty back on the road.
The exploration of the vehicle had me rolling! The lock switch and the glasses and the joy! Great work man!

This is absolutely great! I have always thought DeLoreans were cool but I've never actually had the chance to see one in any sort of detail like you are showing us. I'm totally invested to join your journy with this car. I have enjoyed your other car content but for some reason this is by far the most interesting and fun for me. Looking forward to the next episode. I'm thinking that even if the sending unit is grounded and falsely showing a full tank you should drop the tank and clean out any old gas residue. That fuel injection system takes me back to working on a friend's Volkswagen Scirocco 25 years ago.
I really enjoy your channel. But I have to say that this episode really thrilled me. When the engine started idling I think I was as excited as you were. Too cool! A barn find without all the treasures of mouse droppings and eaten wiring harnesses! This will be really cool. I was thinking this would be an awesome LS swap, but seeing that the motor was good, a resto is fully warranted. I can’t wait for the next episodes. Thanks, signed, a 52 year old dude.

so happy for you man, seriously can't believe that thing turned over so easily, what a big win. Can't wait for the detail video, probably gunna be the best detail before and after on the channel. Congrats man!
Something I saw from Vice Grip Garage, instead of babying the starting of the engine with starting fluid, use a combo of gas and 2 stroke oil. Helps bring the rings right back around. Good save on the DeLorean!
Love the video and allowing us to follow along in your Delorian Journey! Love seeing how allot of things still work in the car and it shows how things were built to last, not like now days where you have a car that’s 1-2years old and window motors or door locks or door handles ect break… it’s sad to see how bad corporations have gotten on building something cheap and selling it for high with no quality.
Wow- I’m super excited for your barn find, it’s like you are a kid getting ready for Christmas! How cool is it that it fired up and the electronics were actually working? With all that corn around the barn, mice have to be everywhere and no chewed wires…amazing!

This is by far my most favorite project that you have accumulated. Not because it's a DeLorean, which is cool in and of itself, but the circumstances surrounding the car and how you got it. I am wondering, though, at 31:39 in the video, it looks like there is a crease in the lower rear of the quarter. If it is, there will be a video attempting the repair on it which will be awesome as well!

Great video! Your excitement is contagious!
Really nice find! BUT you should check that oil gets to all cam cams and rocker arms! It is a very common problem on these engines when they have been standing for a long time with old oil in them or if service has been neglected, the holes that spray oil on the cam's are very small and easily get clogged. I ALWAYS check this before I start up old engines that have been standing for a long time and especially on these PRV engines! Good luck with the car! 😊

The wheels and body panels were possibly made in England - Delorean factory would not have its own wheel foundry and unlikely to have a panel press shop due to the investment cost - so these scrap parts could have come direct from suppliers who had cancelled orders when Delorean went bust.

You are lucky this car was in a humid environment for the 32 years. That is why the wire insulation, rubber, leather, interior plastic etc. is still good/flexible. I have rescued many 2nd gen f-body cars in Colorado and because it is so dry all of that has to be replaced. You have mold to clean off instead of having to replace everything, good trade off.

That air filter is a good indicator that that car was driven a lot on back roads. On a dry day, if you driving behind someone on a dirt road, your air filter will look just like that. What’s alarming is that it looks like it was never replaced. That might mean that car was not kept up on maintenance. Just a thought

Actually the early cars didn't have straps. This was an add on accessory from DMC. At some point they offered the straps in this style that wrapped around the door pull, but I'm not sure if it was standard or an option. Later cars had a built in strap in the door in front of the handle that was screwed on.
Your joy is contagious!

Those cylinders are extremely clean considering that it most likely ran on leaded gas for the majority or entirety of it's time on the road. Unleaded gas was more than available in the 1980s. Leaded gas had a nasty habit of ruining catalytic converters. No, the condition of the plugs, the nice, even carbon in the pistons…. This car was run on the gas it was meant to. With the improvements of today’s fluids, I would hazard that this car, when all the lines are replaced, should last for a lot longer than the older vehicles did back when.

I have a 79 Subaru, it still runs on leaded gas now and then, because I live right next to an airport and to refuel with 100 Low Lead I just have to drive into the parking lot and stretch the hose over to the car. Much easier than driving 20 minutes to the gas station. It is and always was a non-catalyst car. The cylinders look in amazing shape, even being chrome plated aluminum cylinders. Never seen an issue leaded vs unleaded except for lead fouled plugs.
Congratulations! The video, your excitement and enthusiasm are wonderful. On a side note: The name Legrand on the zip-tie is a very old French electrical component manufacturer. They are still known for producing high quality electrical components. That’s why all those cables are in such great condition after all those years. So, don’t cut those Legrand zip-ties just “release” them and put them back on to give the perfect finish to your ultimate barn find. Looking forward to seeing her coming back to life - she’s in safe hands.

My favorite episode, really unfolding the ultimate time machine, his passion, his love, his excitement, he reminds me of Akio and the Devil z in The Wangan Highway series… this is pure Bliss.
Hi Alex really enjoyed the Delorean videos so far and as a Delorean owner of some 30 years completely understand the big smile on your face and your enthusiasm for the car. Some great advice regarding the car in the comments, watch out though for the rubber fuel lines from the accumulator, if one of these splits the car can be lost to fire in seconds. My Delorean was first registered in Florida before being imported to London England, that's were I purchased it and drove it back to Belfast, Northern Ireland. I have been to the factory in Dunmurry Belfast and was lucky enough to do a couple of laps on the original test track. Anyway if you're ever in the UK you can come and stay with me in sunny Northern Ireland, good luck with the car. Norman
You dont have to cut those zip ties, you can stick a small pick in the locking mechanism of the zip tie and release it without cutting it
LOVING these videos, can’t wait to watch the next one.
