First Ship Passes Through New Channel After Baltimore Bridge Collapse

A bulk carrier cargo ship navigated past the Francis Scott Key Bridge ruins on April 25, marking the first vessel passage since the bridge's collapse last month. Following the March 26 collision that led to the bridge's collapse, the route had been inaccessible to large vessels, resulting in six fatalities among bridge workers. The Panama-flagged Balsa 94 cargo ship traversed a newly-opened deep-water channel through the bridge wreckage on Thursday, passing by the stricken container ship Dali. This newly opened channel, deeper than before, enables larger vessels trapped in the Port of Baltimore for weeks to finally resume their sea journeys, facilitating essential maritime commerce.
