First session(s) on my 2024 6m, 5m and 4m Duotone DLab Slicks

Add on Note; someone correctly pointed out I did not show any foot switching in this video. My bad. I usually foot switch all the time to keep the legs from cramping up and getting back upwind more efficiently. Oh well, some unbalanced video editing and i just didn’t switch as much while concentrating on getting moves lined up for the cam. One big advantage of my wing mount cam Is that I don’t have to think about constantly lining up for the action cam. I ride more normally with a wing mount cam😀
So this is the 4th time I’ve upgraded my Duotone boom wing quiver since 2019. Pre-Echo to Echo, Echo to original Slick, original Slick to SLS Slick and now SLS Slick to DLab Slick. Each time I upgrade it’s not like I immediately think the new wings are far superior to my old wings, but I can usually see the potential they offer once I eventually get them dialed in. Definitely the case here.
You immediately feel how stiff these wings are, both struts and canopy. Great for being highly powered up. They say these wings don’t have as good low end but I honestly can’t really tell a difference in the low end to my SLS’s, and that’s after riding all three sizes (4, 5 and 6).
After getting 2 full seasons with the SLS’s I fully expect these DLabs to deliver on 2 full seasons with the least amount of strut and canopy stretch.

You can tell against the originals (slicks) 2022. They have tonnes of low-end. It’s all we use for beginners because of that (and clearance off the water) 2024 are great overpowered. That’s for sure. 👍

Very nice .. I am working on copying your moves - still a long way to go though...and I like your mount of the go pro would be happy to have something like that to see my errors . Thanks for sharing. I`m 61 located in Brazil ... learned everything on my own starting one year later than you without any foil experience .. was a hard learning, but a very nice experience... now struggeling with 360 and backwinding..liked the sequence of your moves

Yeah if you look back through all My winging videos since Oct 2019 you can pretty much follow my (very) slow but steady progression. I know flat water strapless freestyle stuff is boring to most wingers compared to swell/wave riding, but it’s definitely challenging/fun and doesn’t require workable surf conditions. Plus I’m just a lot more chicken around the ocean. The film logging is just a hobby. The reason I keep a 6m wing and an XL (large) foil in my quiver (I’m only 165#) is that it’s far easier for me to learn these moves in lighter winds (say 10-15kts) than strong winds. 360’s and backwinded riding were pretty awkward for me in the beginning too. Lots of falling! But I’d get bored quickly without the challenge

Please please review the OR AA wing!! There is a strange absence of reviews on it, and I think we can trust you. Good work out there

Definitely. Andy and I already talked about trading wings for a session. I did just fling it around a bit there on the grass and it had a nice but slightly different feel to it. He also has a cool AFS board I’d love to try out. I’ve never ridden a longer skinnier board that everyone seems to be raving about

Hello sir, have you tried the 2023 slicks? I'm looking for a 2023 vs 2024 comparison. Great video.

I haven’t tried any 2023 or 2024 regular Slicks and I never tried any of the Units either. I went right from the original Slicks to the SLS Slicks to the 2024 DLab Slicks. I mentioned that in the video but the text goes by pretty quick, so easy to miss. Sorry, I can’t provide any comparison there

Can you share how you make your minibooms? What material, where to buy it? Thanks

If you order a single carbon tube long enough to make a mini boom, the price with shipping doesn’t save you enough money over just paying the $240+ for the top-of-the line Duotone SLS carbon boom. Instead I order this from Amazon : (KARBXON - Carbon Fiber Tube - Black - 25mm X 23mm X 1000mm - Hollow Carbon Fiber rods - Glossy Carbon Tubes - Pure Carbon Fibre Tubes - Lightweight High Strength Carbon Fiber Shaft). You get two 1000mm tubes for $53 usd. That price does vary in typical Amazon fashion. You have to cut one tube down then epoxy them together a with rod or tube connector that fits just inside the carbon tube. I use a 10” piece of wood Dowling you can get at any big box store. Five inch overlap into each tube. Don’t remember the exact dowling diameter but it was a fairly nice fit. Used a good quality marine epoxy, West Systems G Flex. You could also order a smaller carbon tube to work as the connector but you’d need to be sure the ID to OD diameter match is pretty close without being too tight. The front and rear end caps I just cut and shaped from some old teak wood sitting around the shop. You could 3-d print them as well (ABS or Polycarbonate would work). If wood is used drill a hole into each cap so the carbon tube fits in far enough to get a good seal and have the strength. Then plenty of epoxy to glue them on, seal the tube, and waterproof the wood or print plastic. Last step is applying boom grip you can get online from most larger windsurf shops. Several videos out there on gluing grip to a boom using contact cement. I know this isn’t a thorough how-to. If you’re handy around a shop, it’s a no brainer. If not I’d just go for the Duotone options. Hope this helps a little

cool riding 🤩 is the veloce now your preferred front wing? i think about switching from the fluid to the veloce 🤔

  • @targadave

Yep. I used to prefer my Fluid LT slightly over my Veloce LT, but when the V2 versions came along I preferred the little bit of extra pump and glide of the V2 Veloce over the V2 Fluid. If I pair it with the freestyle stabilizer (I have the 39 and 44) it’s plenty loose and turny for my purposes. I still have my Fluid V2 L but I always grab the Veloce when it’s time to ride. For me it is the best all rounder,…….and a great price. I was never a big fan of serious HA foils and I’ve never tried the YPRA-S. The one wing I’m still tempted to get is the V2 Veloce M for riding around at higher speeds in bigger swell (I’m 165#). I’d also use it for light wind kite foiling. I currently have a Fluid MT that sort fits that same category but the V2’s have just been better than the previous generation in every respect

Outer Banks,NC. The light wind day from the boat was Kitty Hawk Bay. It doesn’t have any convenient public access point. The high wind day was Shallowbag Bay off Roanoke Island (soundside opposite Nags Head). Mostly a locals spot (very limited public access).

It looks marvelous. Are you a local there? I'm also older. I used to windsurf some, but the Chesapeake often lacks wind. I'm also older, yet I'm interested in trying this sport. Do you have any advice, like how to learn? Did you do it on your own, or do you have any recommendations for a school. Thanks, Tim

@@timd1202 yes, local since 2007. Windsurfing eons ago, then kiteboarding, then kite foiling and now wing foiling. I learned to wingfoil in the fall of 2019 on my own. The gear back then was crude and everyone was mostly learning on their own . Having previous kitefoil experince made learning to wingfoil waaay easier. Today you have lots of choices, lessons or self teaching. If you’ve never foiled before some lessons for learning to foil behind a boat would help a lot. I would think there are lots of instruction choices all along the east coast by now. There are several choices here on the Outer Banks and they’re all well qualified so no specific recommendations. Also lots of KZread videos for first timers like yourself describing the whole process including the type of gear to get as a beginner. Once you get past the initial learning curve it really is a sport that’s easy on joints of us older types. Good luck!
