Thanks Zed. It was a very simple day pack in terms of kit. Spare clothes, first aid kit, a bit of food and a flask of hot drink. Plus car keys and wallet triple bagged! :-) As for how the canoe was set up, pretty standard for me and there is a good article on the Frontier Bushcraft website on outfitting a canoe by Ray Goodwin. But I'll look at adding some video content here at some point too. Cheers! ☺

I've watched a number of your videos and enjoy them all, but there is one thing I observed a few times and it is something I tell my whitewater canoeing students NOT to do. That would be clipping your throw-rope bag on bow or stern to use as a canoe line. Don';t do it for several reasons: 1) it is too far away from you while sitting in mid-boat to safely reach when immediately needed on the water; 2) the possibility of it entangling in your airbag lines is always present and often prevents a quick grab in a hurry; 3) a rope rescue bag is usually much too long to serve as a bow or stern line unless you devote it to be such and have a shorter line for normal use. The reason here is because it is so long that letting it pay out all the way in the water can lead to a whole bunch of unneeded trouble...best to have a shorter bow/stern (15/25 feet) so to keep the boat from getting too far away as evidenced at the end of this video. Thanks for your great canoeing videos and it would be fun to hear you are coming out to the Rockies someday for some wet fun.

I disagree. You need to make your mind up, is it 15 feet or 25 feet of 'painter' ? A painter as long as your boat is sufficient. As long as you use it for that purpose. I use a 25m 'throwline' tied to the stern, especially for solo paddling, sometimes bow and stern wherever you are. Each with around a meter of tail hanging out. It gives you plenty of line/time to try to get to the bank, and still have some spare as a hauling line if you're lucky. In this particular video, the admired canoeist would have had to let the boat go (possibly loosing boat and gear on a longer expedition) by using an extended 'painter' before he got to the bank via the rescue line. Having a longer 'swim line' to deploy in this circumstance is the way forward. One can retrieve the boat and kit later, as long as it was saved and anchored to the bank. Mind you, I'm 'OldSchool' with years of paddling under my belt, so what would I know ?

@@leeclegg7643 Yeah, same here. Took my first solo canoe turn in 1959, guided my first canoe trip in '72 and have been formally and informally teaching river canoeing since '88...retired now. But I feel the same way, one can always learn. My issue with using a throw rope as bow or stern line is very simple...when you need it you need it now, from the boat to the swimmer so it has to be in arms reach. I am talking solo canoeing but even tandem would take a bit of instability to reach and deploy a bow or stern line as a throw rope though it can be done. The bow and stern lines are devoted to that purpose (25 feet bow and 15 feet stern). When needed you never have to wait for the lines to pay out because you grab the whole line as you exit the boat and often just the boat itself to secure it and position yourself with the throw bag(s). Wait, are we talking apples and oranges here?

@@bdh3949 Hi BD H, I know exactly where you are coming from regarding your descriptions. You seem to be describing rescues from a canoe, not the river bank. Just that on heavy water solo or tandem, I like a 25m swimline which i can grab if capsized and you don't know your arse from you're elbow as far as stern and bow. There's a line there to try to get ashore. If you are in a ''rescuer' mode, a swift unclip of the now rescue throwline bow handy, stern not so likeley, can be achieved. Sometimes I do have a smaller, thinner 15m throwline at the ready too. I'm working on metres, you on feet. 12" of painter on the stern is next to useless albeit for tying your canoe to a branch on the bank whilst you have your brunch and a coffee.

Paul liked it after 1.13 minutes brings back lots of memories of being on water especially some of the white stuff , havnt done it for over 30 years still looks like fun.

Great vid check with RAY but from my view your position inthe canoe for your solo run was the cause of your tip out your position should have been in the center of the canoe, there you would have better control and the bow went up and you were done for, best of luck on your next trip. I'd suggest fitting some knee pads which might make controlling the big Prospector a little easier, especially solo.

+Clifford Wright Hi Clifford, I was expecting it to be colder than it was. It was remarkably mild. The river is shallow at the moment and we've had a few days of warm sunshine. The rocks are warm and the water not too bad at all. As I say, I was expecting it to be a lot more bracing than it was! But good training nonetheless. ATB, Paul
