First Ride: The New Ibis Mojo 4

Спорт

It's been three years since we've seen a new Ibis Mojo, and the brand is making up for lost time with a host of changes to its venerable trail bike. Ibis took lessons learned in developing the rest of its line over the past couple of years, and poured some of the magic back into the iconic Mojo to create 130mm/140mm travel, 27.5" wheeled V4. Bike’s Nicole Formosa breaks down the updates and gets behind the cockpit of the newest bird.

Nicole, I actually like my Plus bike, thank you very much! Maybe in your 'hood you don't need plus tires, but my deserty area has a lot of sandy trails, even in parts of the mountains, and the plus tires (2.8" F/R in my case) are necessary for extra traction and keeping control when you hit those sandy or gravelly loose spots, but still great for all-around riding without the weight of fat bikes. 2.8 (+/- 0.2) in wide tires are probably actually the sweet spot for large parts of the southwest if you only have one bike with one set of wheels and you want to ride a variety of trails. All depends on where you are.

They’re bomb in Appalachian rocky gnar too. That said, however, I feel like I get all of the benefits of the 2.8, with none of the drawbacks with a 2.6. 2.6 has become my all around and do it all tire of choice.

It’s a nice bike and even though 27.5 plus is a fading away, having the clearance to put 27.5x2.8” tires on i40 rims is a nice option. Especially if your local trails get sandy and overused like most of my So Cal Trails. The new Geo seems spot on and the new shock tune sounds way better. I can’t wait to demo this Mojo On other thing I’m curious about is the shorter trail (offset) of the fork to 37mm?

It's funny, comparing the Mojo4 to the HD5 is like comparing the Ripley to the Ripmo. I recently got a V1 Ripmo and been riding it for a few months. Just the other day I hopped on my V1 Ripley and it felt so nimble and fun. My Ripley has XT and Carbon wheels. However, I feel like my Ripmo is just as nimble and may even pedal more efficiently. Damn, Ibis knows how to design bikes. I was contemplating going to a different brand, but couldn't! Ibis is synonymous to Apple!...LOL. I digress....

Referring to plus tires/bikes as a flash I the pan 'caused me to stop paying attention. I love plus tires and plus bikes . There are plenty of instances where. 2.6 to 3.0 tire adds confidence, traction, and forgiveness for poor line choice not to mention better shock absorption. So, no it's not a flash in the pan. "It was pretty due for some updates." Do people listen to themselves? Bike frames used to be the same for 10 years+, now the bicycle industry thinks like the auto industry does...turing out new models annually. And most of those automobiles are junk. All about money. The best riders can beat those that buy this bike on a single speed hardtail riding the same trail. Spend your money on improving yourself not lining the pockets of executives. By the way, I ride a 5 year old IBIS Mojo HD3 and don't plan to replace it with another bike until it explodes. By the way, I think you're due for a wardrobe update.

This is like, "Oh, it's just an Ibis 27"- we don't have to treat it that seriously" which offends the sh!t outta me because I love 27". And I don't dislike Miss Formosa's reviews but what I love about Bike Mag reviewing is the *panel* who play off each other and bring out aspects of the ride/bike that a solo reviewer may not. I am disappointed. I'd still like to see a real 3-person review, hopefully including some males, of this 2021 Mojo4 so I can thumbs up that one. Sub'd but 👎#24
