Pete, I've had the 400EX now for 19 years. I bought it new in 2002. I have gone through many skid plates, nerf bars, handlebars, and throttles. I've changed out the bumpers a couple times and the rear grab bar too. I keep front and rear plastics on the garage shelf for when the final mounting point breaks and I have to replace a fender. What I have not had a problem with has been the motor. I did finally get the top end redone in about 2015, and right now it needs the carb rebuilt and a valve adjustment, but the motor is darn near indestructible if taken care of. Critical need parts in my opinion; Steering stabilizer, Nerf bars, full pipe and jetting, new hub and carrier bearings, and tie rod ends. After that, a real bumper and grab bar. I will be purchasing a new YFZ450R at the end of this year, I'm deployed currently, but will not sell the 400EX. Instead, I plan to refresh the motor with all new bearings and do a complete rebuild, back to stock! I turn 60 this year and absolutely love to ride still. Trx450r shocks, stage 2 hotcam, port work , full exhaust are the top 4 things I would do.

That intro is awesome, really cool how you included the sounds of nature. Nice bike! A very nice addition to the channel.

My first sport quad. First thing first get that exhaust off. New machine completely once it can breath. I had the full Yoshimura RS-3 series. Radiator scoops or air shrouds really helps keep the motor cool. Lonestar axle for a wider stance. Houser racing swing arms. Elka shocks. Renthal fat bars and pro armor front bumper and that was my first sport quad.

Hey Pete. A couple of great upgrades for the early 400ex’s is a a full sparks exhaust, in my opinion it’s the best sounding exhaust and it ups the horsepower and torque than any other exhaust out there. The other is a carburetor off of a 04-05 Honda TRX450R, it truly wakes the motor right up. If you do both of those, you will not regret it one bit.

That is a clean 400EX!! I rebuilt the top end on my last year with a 416 kit and a stage 3 cam still running strong!

Best runing one I've seen had.. Curtis Spraks Carburetor and exhaust. Stage 2 HC with mild port work. It walked on my 450er with slip on, lid removed well jetted. All around great bikes. My Son currently rides an 01. #dependable

The best thing about hondas is that you can beat them up and throw them around and they still work and run. They are very tough machines. My dad and his friends owned hondas.

My dad had been riding his 04ex since I can remember, he bought it from his friend before I was born and it was the first atv with a clutch I’ve riden, it’s still completely stock other than a different battery but I started riding it when he got his raptor and now he’s giving me his raptor and we go up to Michigan for a camping trip and that 400 gets used as work horse, from towing fallen trees to jumping and making new trails. I’ll keep that 400 for as long as I live because I know it will keep running till then

As a matter of fact, Pete, I’m thinking about joining the Yamaha club too and was wondering which you’d recommend between the YFZ450R and the Raptor 700R. Or how you’d compare them anyway. Perhaps you have a vid comparing the two?

hell yea pete i grew up on one of these my dad brought home a brand new 2001 yellow 400ex and i put prob a thousand hours on that machine it was a beast. had to sell it few years back and i miss it i think about it all the time!

Some basic stuff, 416, 11:1 comp piston, stg. 2 hotcam, sparks exhaust, 450r front shocks, 450 carb. CT Racing was able to get 45hp out of a similar setup with a ported head depending on what gas they used.

Def a tusk bumper and tusk heel and nerf bars they are so much fun I love mine man

What a nice unit hard to find 400s that clean now and days especially with the tool kit, cap, and battery rubber

I owned a 2001 400ex and all I did to it outside of motor work was +2 front a arms for stability since they are quite narrow. I also had a +2 rear axle. I swapped out the shocks for the honda 450 shocks and that made a huge difference in handling. Also the handlebars sitting a little low (for my liking) i went ahead and installed +2 steering stem and an updated handle bar. Like you said in the video changing the jetting actually adds a little power and responsiveness. Huge fan of the channel by the way, not very many sport quad channels out there that post as consistently as you do.

Twin row carrier, rebuild and revalve the rear shock, die grind out the stock header welds (gives same flow as an aftermarket header), steering dampener, tires, air filter, and you should be good

Holy crap Pete got a 400ex!! I love it bro. Personally I would have gotten one with reverse but the bugeye is iconic. I'd go with a stage 2 cam, higher compression piston, little port work, 450r shocks, then your bumper nerfs and stuff. I put a +1 alba steering stem with anti vibe clamps on mine. And dude your 450 has turned out absolutely sick.

I have a 2013 400x stock, best all around ride I’ve had. Leave it stock, keep good tires on it and it will outlast everything.

For performance: Slip-on, take off airbox lid, rejet For comfort: trx450r front shocks revalved and resprung, stock rear shock revalved and resprung, full skid plate kit, GBC XC Master tires

Can't beat old air cooled Hondas! Makes me want to tear around on my 350X, but am recovering from ACL surgery. I think I would be concentrating on suspension. It's already pretty plush, but could be improved. One thing to remember about the older Hondas is that the rockers require hardwelding for aftermarket cams ( in most all cases, iirc).

For the hard cold starts, check jetting as you mentioned and perhaps more importantly check your valves. My 400 ex would do the same thing and intake valves would tend to tighten up over time.

Great Video! And no, the 400ex frames did not come in red ... they are all grey (1999-2002) or silver-ish (2003+). They make replica stickers (and that one looks like a replica) of all the OEM production stuff. The OEM factory model sticker has thinner font style writing on it and that one just looks WAY TOO NEW!

My lexx mxe pipe is awesome its not to loud not too quiet and really brings out the sound of the quad which sounds really cool

Love my 08 400ex i have a stage 2 hot cam hmf exhaust fmf header and its been bored over to 440 its my first sport quad we clocked it at 90mph love it has alot of torque you can ride a wheelie in all the gears

They only came with a grey/silver frame, i have never seen a polished subframe that tool kit and rubber flap is super rare to find, i started out on a 400ex wish i would have kept it fun machine to ride
