First reactions | Katalin Karikó, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2023 | Telephone interview
The call from Stockholm woke Katalin Karikó at her home outside Philadelphia. Initially in disbelief, in this interview with Adam Smith, recorded soon after she had learnt of the award of the Nobel Prize for discoveries that accelerated the introduction of vaccines for Covid-19, she recalls her journey from Hungary and some of the setbacks on the path to the mRNA vaccines. "10 years ago I was here in October, because I was kicked out and forced to retire!" Her advice is to not to dwell on the problems: "You have to focus on the things you can change."

Unfortunately we still live in a sexist society, the prize is also assigned to the husband like Marie Curie, just as the best inventions have been by women, this she has done could be the best. And why not say so? Made by a woman
I am a Biotechnology student...what a inspiring story...♥️

Many congratulations to ma'am .
She sounds so warm and motherly. 🥹
The first female Nobel Laureate of Hungary. It's sad that nobody believed in her and she had to immigrate to get support for her research and to be able to achieve such height. I guess people who are ahead of their time are always ridiculed and never understood. Congratulations to her!!!!

also Hungary has a habit of chasing brainpower away then later on claiming their achievements as some sort of national success, which is embarrassing to say the least.

You forget to mention that a lot of scientists left the country because of WWII and later because of the communist regime where they couldn't have developed in the same way as in other countries. However, their success is also national success because they grew up in Hungary, and went to Hungarian schools and they all left the country when they were already adults. Karikó finished her PhD studies in Hungary, after that she left the country.@@grazglednica
