Vanessa is another Aussie legend that we all love. She has the most amazing range and breath control and a very beautiful low range in her voice. I seriously don’t think she was nervous, she’s been singing for years. When she was only 19 she opened the Sydney 2000 Olympics with an amazing song called Heroes live forever which I believe she wrote. She had an audience of billions watching her back then and didn’t show any nervousness. Just check it out and see how long she holds that last note😳

@@mssuziquzi Hi! Doesn't really matter. :) I just enjoyed reading your comment and got curious when I found out she actually IS a songwriter in addition to being a fabulous singer. Usually someone who sings like that doesn't have to be writer, she's that good. I gave Charlie the link for the Sydney performance, so maybe he'll give that one a go. That performance blew me away.

Oh you've opened another Aussie rabbit hole Charlie !! Vanessa has been singing since she was very young, she started charting in 1999, if anything, where you may have thought she was 'nervous' I think when you've watched a few more of her videos you'll see that it's actually her way of reining herself in and attempting to not over sing too much... Her range is incredible and she's an even nicer person ! Good luck - you're going to love her !

It's not a range issue though. Sorry, I know its really hard to take when someone notices something less than complimentary (even though everything else about what I said was complimentary) about an artist you love. But no artist is infallible. There were runs that didn't land and her phrasing was rushed in places. As I say, if you're not a trained Vocalist you're probably not going to pick up on these things. But I am a trained Vocalist and I'm giving my critique from that perspective. I even checked with some of my mentors before posting this to make sure I wasn't being overly critical and they confirmed what I was talking about

Creating dynamic, beginning softer so she has somewhere to take it. This woman is an Aussie music icon. She released ‘absolutely everybody’ in the year 2000 and it was the Olympic anthem. She’s had world wide success and has been around since the 90’s and still sings like that.

It was nerves but she held her own enough to tell everyone she has the pipes and feel. On another day it will shine even greater. From the 2000 Olympics (Heroes live forever) to Euro Vision. She’s done a lot. She can sing anything and mostly live. You need to hear her do Janis Joplin and other songs she wrote like, recorded in isolation, lessons of love (Euro Vision) or Mohammed.

This wasn't even close to being a case of trying to not over sing. Over singing is adding too many runs and ornamentals. Not holding notes for their required length of time. Lead with the desire to be factual rather than the desire to defend

5:10 to 5:25 for examples of the runs not landing. This is the confidence thing I'm referring to again. She's almost backing out of the runs as she goes along. Bum notes, lacking clarity and intention. She's almost letting the run happen to HER rather than have her happen to the run and it just doesn't land properly. As I said in the video, someone who isn't trained probably wouldn't notice and I'm also not saying she isn't a great singer. But I'm also here to give a critique. I'm not here to just pour glorious sunshine on everybody regardless of how they perform. I feel like a lot of people only watch reactions to have their own love for an artist validated

@@TheCharlieSmithChannel you were explaining how she should sing the song from the 2:19 section, you know, where you were saying from singer to singer, maybe you could give me some titles of your latest hits, i will look them up and see if you qualify to say singer to singer, Vanessa sang to an audience of 3.7 billion people at the Sydney Olympic in 2000, dont be putting yourself in the same class, do choir singers tell opera singers how to sing?

@@iancremmins4727 haha I'm not impressed by an Olympics performance. That many people didn't come to see her. Their eyes were already on the event regardless of her. I find it incredible how butt hurt people get when you do anything but rain praise down on the artists they love. You're allowed to love them and I'm allowed not to. As a trained vocalist I am qualified to speak on people's vocal techniques. How many hits you've had is not the measure of your knowledge. That's ridiculous! My technical development teacher was George Michael's vocal coach and he'd not had one hit 8n hid life because he was a tutor and not an artist. Does that make him unqualified? That doesn't make any sense. I've shown this to many of my friends in the industry, including my friend in one of the most famous gospel choirs in the world, and they agree with me. It's good but not great. If you think it's great then more power to you. I don't 🤷🏻‍♂️. That's not to say I won't think other performances of her's are great, but this one wasn't it for me.

I don’t know who she is but there’s no question that she has an incredible voice. She’s got amazing range and power; I just don’t love this song choice for her. This song isn’t meant to be a power ballad so I think it fell flat without the emotional storytelling aspect. Also, the sounds mixing wasn’t great…too much bgv in the chorus.

I’m going to be one of if not the only Aussie who agrees with you. Vanessa is absolutely phenomenal as you’ve no doubt discovered- but this wasn’t her best performance. She could kill this song and has done so before. But this one her mood didn’t quite match the song, maybe just a slightly off night, or the acoustics weren’t right for her or something. But I know what you’re saying.
