Lead singer Chino Moreno (on Maynard's appearance): "Having Maynard perform on the record wasn't something that we planned on doing. We didn't plan on having any guest on the record. But being a fan of Tool and A Perfect Circle, once Maynard was involved, it was just a magical thing for us. Honestly, when he first started working with us, he wasn't supposed to sing with us. He was just working on the arrangements, riff structures, time signatures, and things like that. I don't know if you're a big fan of Tool's music, but they're really mathematical. I've been to their rehearsal space, and there's this big chart that just looks like calculus--the way they write songs, it's just crazy. It was good to have someone else who has different ways of writing songs, 'cause everyone has a different way of doing it. He came in and we started working on this one song in particular, and he just grabbed the microphone and started singing along to it, and my jaw just dropped. All of a sudden our band sounded like Tool; it was just crazy. Then, probably two months later, we went in to record the album, and I went in to record the vocals on it, and I just kept hearing his voice, this re-occurring melody with his voice coming over it. So I called him and asked him if he wanted to come down and sing on the record, and he had no problem with it. Once he came in, I gave him sort of what I wanted the song to be about, and he wrote a couple of ideas down, and the next day he came in with all the lyrics written all out with blank spaces where my lyrics were supposed to be. He's very professional like that. He wants everything set perfectly, which is the complete opposite to the way that I write, so it was cool. And then I went in and did my vocals over it, and it just seemed that our voices blended together pretty good. Yeah, it came out pretty good, so we decided to put it on the record

for me personally as a drummer, what makes abe stand out from others more specifically than his feel is the way he plays with dynamics. it's the most subtle of things but in that last bridge before the ending where he's just riding and playing around the backbeat is a master display of dynamics. some snare hits are accented more than others and not every quarter note he plays on the ride is the same. it's just his placement of accents and how he just floats around grooves that does it for me

    1. Liked the song, I hadn’t heard it before, so its great discovering new stuff with you guys. 2. The Deftones are like the Barry White of rock. Pure vibe and mood setting. 3. Rock collabs aren’t battles, they’re like adding an ingredient to your favorite meal. You’re adding it to try and enhance the dish, but it could also ruin it. 3. Charles made some really great points about the sonics and use of Maynard. 4. Sticking with JB’s digs about certain friends stuck in the past, I find it amusing that Charles’ camera date is in 2018 😂😂😂

When it comes to Tool’s songwriting process, I think Maynard only adds lyrics and vocals once the song is practically complete (wrt recording the instrumentation). So I’m assuming that with this track, he’s also just trying to add to what’s already there rather than intentionally stand out.

Na, they were getting along fine during this album. It was the self titled and Saturday Night Wrist where they started to fall apart and had strife. From what the producer had said, which I believe was Terry Date, he had said they had some writer's block during the making of this song. I believe Maynard was already in the studio on some other project at the time and they grabbed him. I know that during the making of this album, they had some good vibes going on.

The deftones 100% laid down a beautiful, sonic-scape that Maynard just slid right into and it was an amazing communion. The chorus “ROLL THE WINDOWS DOWN..” like it hits you straight in the chest and is an important juxtaposition of the more drowsy and fluid feel of the rest of the song. I do think deftones could have done this song on their own and it would be amazing, but Maynard juiced it up for sure.

all of their newest album "ohms" is worth checking out musically, and if you put it to a vote, "the spell of mathmatics" would probably win, but it's not my personal favorite. definitely worth looking into if you're into the vibe-type deftones songs!

Ceremony is my top pick. I think radiant city would be a good pick for them as it’s more upbeat.

Chino had a bit of writer’s block lyrically on this album and that was why Maynard was brought in initially. To help with lyrics.

Chino and Maynard go back and forth during the verses, and then Maynard takes over most of the chorus. It takes some close listening to be able to tell which one is singing at what point, since the effects make them both sound similar to each other. I know on my first listen, I had a hard time telling who was who.

Abe Cunningham is a ridiculous drummer. I've had the pleasure to chop it up with him and he loves talking shop. The snare on this track is one of the driving forces on this. Single stroke rolls, ghost notes, double and triple stroke rolls -- thoroughly gorgeous in both technique and execution.

I love what you said about the difference in culture and how in Rap it's about murdering a verse on someone else's track because there's a famous Tool story about how they auditioned a guitarist but the guy was trying to be too flashy/in the limelight and the rest of the band was like "nah bro, it's about what we can accomplish together" so they decided not to go with that guy. The Rap world is very different to the Rock/Metal world.

Featuring vocalists within rock/metal, and their subsequent genres are typically not like a "versus" type of thing. I say "typically" because I've never heard it. Between close friends among different bands, it might've happened before. One of the singers in my band and I have joked about doing "battle rock" songs, but I think people take it too serious. I'd say that usually a band would write a song that is kind of a mesh between their own style, and that of who is featuring. I have heard some bands write a song that is exactly their usual style, and then the feature is more of a "what-if" situation. There isn't really a competition within rock/metal, unless it's explicitly setup and stated to be in that format.

If you want more modern music that has vibes like Deftones and Tool, you should definitely be checking out Sleep Token. Jaws, The Offering, Alkaline are all good starting songs by them. Their drumming is definitely something you should be looking out for. Love and respect guys
