First piano lesson with 5 year old Lewis Feng (30 mins no edits)

ANNOUNCEMENT: We have refined our concept and use MUSO-METHOD to teach; to teach classical music in a fun and serious way. Since this video, we have also revived our way of teaching music notes via flash cards. For those interested, you can join our journey on musomethod.app where we will be continuously releasing products, curriculums and online tutorials on how to teach the Muso-Method way. Hope you can all join!
Lots of piano teachers around the world (Aus, Europe, South America, Middle East) ask how we engage with our students interactively and match their energy.
Watch 23yo piano teacher Isabelle Ng teach 5yo Lewis Feng, very energetic little boy.
Note: there was also a toilet break which couldn’t be helped 🤣 I decided to leave it unedited.
I will maybe edit another version 👍
Hope you enjoy!

I know this video is a year old, but as a fellow piano teacher, I highly recommend you take a look at the “Tales of a Musical Journey” method by Irina Gorin for this age. It teaches children theory concepts through stories, and really helps them use their imagination - not to mention the wonderful approach it uses in teaching healthy technique. Children are much more likely to remember the concepts they learn, because they relate them to characters and stories. It is more effective, and fun (for both of us! 😊) than drilling Flashcards. Also, I can totally relate to the: “Put your feet down.” “I know you love your feet, but…” 😅 The 5 year olds always love their feet don’t they? 😆

So in a first lesson should i cover position, middle c, clefs, octaves and notes all in one lesson? Depends on the student i guess and if they were told anything beforehand

unless a student has prior knowledge and family support this is not a realistic first lesson. most of my students this age take a few lessons to learn groups of 2 and 3 black keys, high/low sounds and up/down. a few more lessons to learn quarter notes and rests, and names of the white keys. and then they are ready to start reading music. unless they have a knowledgable parent and a lot of support, this is more like 3rd or 4th MONTH of lessons, not first lesson

I have my son sit in my lap - mostly showing him how I play and letting him play (even if it doesnt sound good). He can now understand that you can make harmonies, ect. Don't expect more than 5-15 minutes of focus at a time.

Cute. Surprise the teacher didn't teach songs by ear in L1 than trying to introduce reading right away. Can never agree on drilling students on note names by "rote". Some people learn foreign languages the same way by memorizing words & phrases. The student is actually spending more time learning the name of notes & beat values that have all sorts of funny names while he hardly played a song.
