First Photoshoot with my Fuji XT3

I have purchased a new Fujifilm XT3 and I am changing the way I make videos and take photographs when hiking. My camera gear was always too heavy and in this video I test out a lightweight photography set up which should help me when putting in those long miles.

On the XT3 be sure to put a piece of tape over the rubber cap on the bottom where the battery grip connectors are. And I also put a piece of tape over the hotshoe. It only happened in a downpour, where I should've been using a rain cover anyways, but when those spots got wet the camera shut off. When I put the camera in my dry box it turned back on without any issues. I sent it to Fuji to inspect just in case and they said none of the water indicators were triggered. So they gave me a sensor clean and sent it back. Just a hint from a long time Fuji shooter

Last year around this time, I made the switch from my Canon 5d Mk2 to the Fuji X-T3, and I've honestly never looked back. The full frame Canon gear was killing my back, and making me leave my camera at home... and the best camera is the one you have with you. Not a single person has noticed a difference in quality, and especially after watching Nigel Danson's videos where he compares identical images taken with his Nikon Z7 and Fuji XT3, I don't have the slightest hesitation using it for "pro work." Happy shooting, and can't wait to see what Nepal brings!

You have opened my eyes to other possibilities and what it takes to capture a better image, so thank you. Some of the places you have photographed I know quite well and would have never imagined there was a decent shot, when I have visited there in the past. It’s about composition, light, tones and textures, less means more and many other things, I get it now. Let me preface by saying I'm not watching to critique video quality, I watch for the content. I understand people use different gear for different reasons and compromises must be made at times.....since you brought it up, the gopro footage was awful next to the clips shot with the XT-3. If your still experimenting, might I suggest 2.7k, linear mode, limit the auto ISO to 800 or less and use a different color setting on the GoPro. Very eager to see how you get along with the Fuji!!

Thomas, if you find your X-Trans files are lacking detail when you import them into Lightroom, Adobe introduced a feature called "Enhance Details" at the start of 2019 (Photo menu > Enhance Details). It uses machine learning to pull out a lot more detail and color detail from X-Trans (and Bayer) files. When it's finished processing it creates a new DNG file, which is still a raw file, but has been "enhanced". The process is processor intensive, but the results are excellent.

Hi Thomas, just some feedback... I can see how convenient the Gopro would be but personally I think the quality isn't good enough, I think you would be better off with a more compact camera. I guess that's going to defeat the purpose of what your trying to do, but you have set yourself such a high standard over the years, and that Gopro footage is detracting from your videos. Just my thoughts, keep up the great work, I really tip my hat to you for what you do.

It seemed to me that with the GoPro he wasn't quite in focus. The background was nice and sharp and you could see lots of detail, not so on his face. Or was that due to the fogging he spoke about? Was it only foggy in the center of the lens? Years ago someone was making a strap that went around your chest and had a lens size hole in it. You stuck your lens through it and it kept the camera from bouncing all over and you could quickly remove the camera to take pics. Have you ever done a stability test with that lightweight tripod and your various cameras? The best one I used to do was attaching a laser to the camera's hot shoe setting up the tripod a fair distance from a wall, then using a remote trigger so stood close to the wall, triggered the camera and check how much the laser bounces around. Alternatively, you could attach a small mirror to a junk filter, just make sure it blocks the entire front of the lens, you don't want a laser shining into your digital camera and hitting the sensor, burning a permanent spot onto it. Anyways, bounce the laser off the mirror and back to the wall.

  • @FilippoMasoni

    @FilippoMasoni

It's probably due to the fogging in the lens combined with the compression which is smoothing out the pixels without details because of the fog. The GoPro is actually very powerful if used correctly. Linear mode to avoid the distortion and to look similar to other cameras. Set to pro tune, low ISO to get less noise and more motion blur, low sharpening which looks better and especially in the woods set a manual white balance and the flat profile. The Fuji looks very flat and the GoPro too contrasty, if you match the color profiles better you won't see as much difference. It also needs a bit more color grade than other cameras but if you want to put some effort you can get good results out of a GoPro. Also to consider the small sensor in a very dark area like this woodland can't do miracles, if he was up a mountain when the sun was out it would have looked so much better.

Hi there Thom! Hope you see this, as I have some thoughts and tips I think could be of use! I was a Fuji X-T3 user for almost a year, before switching to the 5D mkIV a couple of months ago, partly inspired by your videos ;) I work in a photography store, and I do think that the Fuji is a great choice for you for your upcoming trek! While it is APS-C and Fuji does some funky things with their sensors to produce that "filmic look", it's a great balance between weight, image quality, weather resistance, and video. I would however recommend a few alterations to your setup in order to gain the most of its potential: I would consider replacing your 18-55 f/2.8-4 kit lens with the newer 16-80mm f/4. While the 18-55 is a great kit lens and is one stop brighter on the wide end, that's where its advantages end. It is not weather sealed, the stabilisation is subpar, and 18mm would only go as wide as 28mm on a full frame camera. While the 16-80mm is slightly heavier, its image stabilisation is fantastic, and combined with the equivalent full frame wide angle of 24mm, I think it would be way more suited for your vlog style shots. Given that you're going for a one-camera solution, I also think it would be really smart to use only weather sealed lenses, which the 16-80mm is, on your weather sealed body, so you're not suddenly stuck in the wild with no working camera if it drops into the river ;) Furthermore, if you knew that you would not require an extreme wide angle on the trip, the 16-80 could make it more possible for you to skip the 10-24mm entirely! Now, about the gopro, it is fairly apparent to me that its images does not match up to the fuji. I think that this actually could be partly BECAUSE you were filming in 4K. There is a general issue of bitrate in this video, making KZread crank up its fairly rudimentary compression algorithm after upload, resulting in lots of blocky textures. To me there is also quite little point in filming with the gopro in 4K and punching in, because the distortion of the lens makes the cropped in image rather unpleasant. If you were to have better stabilisation and a slightly wider focal length on the xt3, I do not think you would even need to film with the gopro at all, except on your head for those POV shots. Again, I think the 16-80mm is the lens for you ;) As for settings, I would turn the Gopro down to 1080p, and then see what bitrates you were filming on for both cameras. The fuji is capable of extreme rates, but you won't need it unless you're editing colors a lot in post. I suggest putting it on film simulation "eterna", and setting the bitrate to 50 mb/s. When you export your video before uploading it, I would also recommend setting it to about 10-14 mb/s. Finally, while I love analog photography and rather liked the old style shutter release cable on the fuji, I suspect you might be interested to know that they do offer a more conventional, digital shutter release cable as well! I absolutely adore your work dude, keep it up and good luck figuring out your setup for the trip!

For wide angle nothing beats the 8-16mm and the new 16-80 mm has too many problems.. And the statement that the 18-55 has subpar stabilization compared to 16-80mm makes me worried about having you in a photography store :D

As i'm 42yo, weight is now more important to me :) And must say i'm in love with Fuji now. Amazing camera, amazing lenses, and everything is lightweight. Wish i made that switch sooner.

This in fact I learnt from my mistake during my trip to Burma. It was raining, I was indoor shooting through an open window, when some young monks were passing with their umbrellas. The mist or very fine droplet must have come in from the windows, and contacted the sensor when I swap lens. I had shadowy dots spread over all the images with High aperture value. Every single photo that include sky after that faithful lens change has specks of shadow. Which I had to spend hours to remove. I also notice the higher the F, the darker the dots became.

@@davemackenzie9900 Lightroom works well enough, but when you pixelpeep you see how bad it handles Fuji files in comparison to other programs - the best known example are the notorious wormy artifacts when sharpening and the watercolor rendering. I use Lightroom as well, it's usable enough when you handle the files with care, but my main problem is that I don't want to give up the DAM side of Lightroom. In file handling, pretty much every competitor does a better job, I tested pretty much everyone 2 years ago, just looking how the RAWs look "out of the box" and with a fair amount of sharpening. The best results are from Fuji's own RAW developer and Silkypix (same), Capture One, Alienskin Exposure and even Apple's default RAW plugin, even as an amateur you can easily spot the Lightroom file between them. With sharpening Lightroom is no doubt the worst of the big programs. However, it's ease of use, DAM etc. make up for a lot, and until this day I was never ready to leave it because the RAW handling is not bad enough to justify all the nerve wrecking that comes with moving a huge collection to another program.

The team behind Capture One properly cares about the camera profiles they implement for each camera, and do their best for an ideal rendering and editing of any RAW file. Fuji RAF file render beautifully in Capture One. Lightroom in comparison does a bad job. And that‘s very disappointing for a huge company that charges high monthly fees for their software. Admittedly, their photography package is not too expensive, but it‘s a price where I expect excellent software and not some half backed shit (Half baked shit is a bit exaggerated, but their software really lacks behind in certain areas, like RAW rendering and performance).

They all go in one rucksack with a tripod attached and filters etc and in total weigh 18lbs (approx 8 Kg). So I’m ready for anything that I usually photograph. I love the total control of fixed aperture lenses, such a pleasure to use. A bit heavy to carry them all at my age of 72 but of course I don’t have to carry them all if I’m going out for a specific project, but in any case certainly a lot lighter than carrying full frame glass. The Fuji systems gives me great pleasure to use with the knobs. I don’t like having to scroll through menus like on so many cameras. I wouldn’t go back to full frame now unless I had a photo studio.

My thoughts exactly. Especially for lenses that extend, I prefer to have some form of weather sealing as a last resort in bad conditions. I used the 16-55mm as my go to lens for landscapes and while it was wonderful to shoot with, I've always wondered if I was better off shooting a full frame mirrorless setup that was roughly the same weight. Especially when you put the 50-140mm into the equation, there is practically no weight saving at all.

Thomas can I give you some advice? Just joking, I'm not an asshole. I love this video. I've switched over to Fuji and I find it really nice. Curious to see how you find it.

Me again :) For the battery 'issue' I have a charger that can charge 2 batteries at once and run from an USB external battery. This is what I am using when I need to use the camera for longer time (like night photography, or timelapses, or going somewhere where I think I will not have access to power network for longer time).

More info on the Fuji XT3 will be very welcome I currently use the XT2, XT3 with the 3 XF Zooms from 16mm to 400mm plus the 1.4 converter. After switching from Canon over a year ago I am still getting to grips with Fuji but I wouldn't switch again. Keep up the good work.

Nice that you have an open mind to trying new gear based on the situation. I switched to Fuji from Canon FF for the same reasons, but I still found the Fuji with 3 lenses to heavy when carrying gear for long overnight hikes.. Now I use a tiny but awesome Sony RX100 III for hiking and the Fuji for when I don't need to sleep on a mountain.

I've had the XT3 for 3 months now. I'm happy with it, with the feel and all. The menus are a bit complicated, but I'll get used to it. I had to switch from sharpening my images in Lightroom to sharpening in Photoshop though, coz Lightroom cannot handle Fuji raw file format, you get that "worm like" thing, it's why Fuji users often have Capture One instead of LR. And believe me, those worms are definitely visible when editing and zooming into the image. Maybe from afar, looking at the final edit, I couldn't tell, but I'd still know it's not the best sharpening and couldn't stand it. I only have the kit lens so far, next year I will buy the 55-200 or 50-140 (the latter is double the price coz it's f2.8). Careful with battery life, you may need to have 3 batteries for a full day of shooting and filming in the cold. On your video, the image quality from the Fuji is amazing, but it does lose focus when your eyes are not looking at the camera.

If you right click on Fuji RAW file in Lightroom and choose "Enhance detail", it greatly improves both luma and chroma details while removing the worm effect completely. But it's manual and creates new files, so it is not very practical.

@@robertgrenader858 I have the most recent version and lightroom makes a lot of mess when processing my X-T1 RAW files. Zoom in 1:1 and you can already see a huge loss of detail, also there's some weird artifacts going on because of the poorly designed Adobe X-Trans debayer process. Try comparing your images from Lightroom to JPEGs out of the camera and you will quickly notice that Adobe just ain't doing it right

Hi Thomas, I also have the small Lowepro bag and I usually wear it on the chest attached to the main back pack. It gives me full access to my gear an free hands to enjoy the hike. I found it the best way to handle my gears hiking.
