In this video I show you how to do an oil change on a Mk8 Golf GTI Clubsport.
The first service officially is due at 10,000 miles but oil can degrade rapidly after 5000 miles especially with hard use and having driven the car on track, I felt it was wise to do this now at 6200 miles (a bit later than is ideal).
If you are like me, you'll be intrigued by the subtle differences over the previous generation cars which are evident once you lift a Mk8 in the air.

If you tip the oil bottle on its side whilst filling, it doesn't glug out as badly. Also Draper do a really neat oil funnel that sits on and supports itself. Great to see underneath these cars - thanks!

As long as the oil is 504 00 approved it’s irrelevant whether you use 0W30 or 5W30 - VW changed their OEM supplier from Castrol to Shell and since Shell went 0W30 thats what they’re recommending

For Mk7.5 erwin currently states just 504 00 but for Mk8 they state 0w/30 504 00. If what you said was true wouldn't every recommendation for 504 00 now state 0w/30?

@@volkswizard VW oil supplier changed at the beginning of 2020. MK7.5 debuted in 2017 - at the time when the official oil supplier for VW was Castrol who at the time did not offer 0W30 504 00 - only 5W30. As during Golf 7.5 era there were 2 different VW oil suppliers offering different oil grades for 504 00 I cannot imagine ERWin now changing retrospectively it’s recommendations for Golf 7.5 effectively ruling out either Castrol or Shell. Currently only 504 00 oil grade offered by VW dealerships are 0w30 and that’s what they recommend. What does your user manual says? I am sure regardless of grade, 504 00 or 508 00 is the only parameter that’s important.

It's been years since I've done an oil change, but I think I'd be confident enough to do that - and I agree, I can't see a garage taking the time to do the oil change as thoroughly! I did consider doing my 7.5 R estate myself, prior to the service - but it only had just under 4.5k on it when the first service was due a few weeks ago anyway (mainly thanks to Covid-19)! I saw the video where you did your own 7.5 R Estate after about 1200 miles (I think?). I scored a 2yr service plan from my VW dealer when I bought mine last year (which lessened my enthusiasm for doing that myself 🤣), but would tackle it in the future - particularly when the warranty runs out & I've paid the PCP off

I always do an oil change cold after an overnight stand. As the engine was HOT when I turned it off, all the oil has already come from the engine into the sump. Now there's literally NO oil left around the engine, just leave plenty of time for the dirty oil (now ONLY present in the sump} to drain off. Garages usually don't do this cos they start work shortly after the car has been driven. Or am I missing something?

I've checked erwin and for a 2018 R, it says VW 502 00 approved oil. It doesn't specify a grade. For flexible intervals it says VW 504 00 approved oil, again with no grade. VW have probably sold you an oil that's probably a lot more expensive that it needed to be but is probably still OK

Hi. My MK8 eTSI is scheduled to arrive soon and I was wandering if it's a good idea to do the run-in procedure and for how many miles and also what kind of oil does this engine require after that? P.S. I've also heard that the latest longline oils are somewhat thin, why do you think that is? Ecology or different engine design? Do you think it will require more frequent oil changes? One more thing. I'm guessing the new eTSI is paired with the dq200 DSG gearbox and is supposedly maintenance-free which I don't believe. What do think? Thanks.

Just want to pick up on something that you showed on the Erwin VW servicing site,VW think it's ok NOT to change your air filter for SIX years there having a laugh aren't they if you left it that long your engine certainly wouldn't be performing very well at all. I changed the air filter on my VRS my self last year after four and a half years and the difference it made was noticeable and the fuel economy improved as well so I hope you don't leave the changing of your air filter on the CS that long. Nice video as usual. Interesting VW went back to a steel oil pan. I wonder why? Can't they make up their minds? :) I've had my same oil pan plug since 2016 as I suction out my oil every year. I hate crawling under my car, remove the shields, and removing the plug to drain the oil. Even if there is some oil left I don't see that causing a problem IMHO. Hello Alan in hot Florida, yes it's cool in the UK. It's funny that a few people have mentioned suction for old oil - VW specifically tell you not to do that as it doesn't get enough out. I am not sure whether this is from mk8 or before but it's worth checking. The sheilds are a drag so it's great when a car doesn't have one that needs removal!

I am a VW enthusiast and own a Mk5 golf which I've had for years and always loved VWs, until now. Why the mk8 went for no buttons and just too much tech, I prefer a Speedo with a needle and a handbrake and normal buttons you'd associate with a cars heating controls for example. This golf has not only disappointed on that front end which doesn't look as aggressive or as slick as the mk7.5 and just a shame after so many years the iconic hot hatch has been turned into a Tesla wannabe or something. Such a shame and even more so that these cars have been designed by accountants not engineers 🤣

Strange that no VW dealers held 0W-30 (504). This suggests that cars taken to a main dealer get the much more common 5W-30 (504). My guess is that the switch to 0W-30 is down to fine tuning friction on a cold start, purely for emissions.
