First Nilfgaardian War - Witcher Lore DOCUMENTARY

New Wizards and Warriors Channel animated fantasy documentary lore video will cover the First Nilfgaardian War in the Witcher universe! We will talk about the origins of the world created by Sapkowski, how the "modern" states were formed and how and why the Empire of Nilfgaard went to war against the North Kingdoms, leading to the first Nilfgaardian War and the battles of Cintra and Sodden Hill. The team behind Kings and Generals and the Cold War channels hopes that you will enjoy this video!

I would love to talk about other franchises. Especially some obscure one but it is understandable that you will start with Behemoths like Star Wars, Start Trek, Dune, LoTR, D&D, Warhammer 40K etc. My favourite would be history of Myrtana in the Gothic universe (it there is one franchise more beloved in Poland than Witcher it would be Gothic) - it would generate you a lot of views from all Europeans east of Rhine River. :)

hey guys, writer here. One quick note: while the rest of this video sticks strictly to book canon, the detail of delayed Skelligan reinforcements at the Marnadal step is taken from the Netflix canon. This is because Sapkowski gives us precious little detail about this event in the books and I wanted to give it some more substance. Enjoy!

Yeah, all of the political and military events are treated for the most part as a distant background to the story of Sapkowski's novels, until we get to the Battle of Brenna and Sapkowski is like; "Here, have all of the details! Multiple points of view from various combatants on both sides of diverse ranks and roles, even glimpses into how the historiography and different educational systems in this fictional world will present (and mispresent) these events in the future".

However the only thing that annoyed me about the tv show is they failed to mention this and paint the Elves as entirely the wronged party. Hopefully in Season 3 we get to see the formation of the Scoiatel units and maybe also some Dwarves joining them because the Scoitael weren't just Elves.

Greetings, thank you for a great video based on one of my favorite universes, i am sad to say that, but I have noticed a small mistake. Duny didn't accidently kill Paveta. Vilgefortz prepared a spell that would create a portal in the sea and create some kind of magical whirlpool that would later ruin many of Skellige ships. When Paveta found out where they were heading and Duny learned that Ciri was not with them they started arguing and Paveta ran out of the magically protected room on the ship, Duny followed her and it was the moment when the ship crashed and Duny was telleported south terribly wounded un process. It was never stressed or presented in novels, but one could imagine that Paveta's body was also telleported next to him. The loving father and husband Duny died there in the south looking at unblinking eyes of the woman he loved and the same moment Emhyr var Emreis, the White Flame that dances on the barrows of his enemies was reborn.

It's not certain the Black Seidhe were reals, it's only a supposition from a knight that Nilfgaardians were Black Seidhe, which was denied by a actual elf who said that Nilfgaardians are actually just humans. The only canon Nilfgaardians elves are the Wood Elves who seems to be just normal Aen Seidhes or at least, Spark, their only representant, doesn't seem to be any different from the Northren elves. If Avallac'h word is to be trusted, the firsts contacts between the Nordlings and the Elves were actually peaceful until the humans become too numerous. The elves teached magic to the humans before their first wars as one of the human mages was actually old enough to remember the First Landing. I don't think Calanthe was portrayed as a warrior in the book. As a efficient and fierce ruler, yes, as a general, maybe but i don't think she actually ever fighted. I'm fairly certain on the other hand that the Scoia'taels didn't exist in the First War. they only appear in the Second after Nilfgaard learned than might alone wouldn't be enough to conquer the North. the Brotherhood of Sorcerers wasn't clandestime, it was the legitimate institution of mages lead by the Chapter and the Council.Maybe you are mistaking it for the Lodge? Your video is quite interesting with beautiful graphisme^^ can't wait to see more.

"The first painting featured an ancient ship, tossed by the waves among the rocks outcropping from the whirling deep. At the prow stood a man in white robes, his head adorned by a halo. 'The First Landing,' guessed the witcher. 'Indeed,' confirmed Vilgefortz. 'Ship of the Exiles. John Bekker subdues the Power. He calms the waves, proving that magic need not be just evil and destructive, but can be used to save lives as well.' 'Is this an authentic event?' 'I doubt,' smiled the wizard. 'Most probably Bekker and the rest of the crew were throwing up over the brim. The Power was subdued only after the landing, which happened to be peaceful. Let's forward. Here you can see John Bekker again, forcing water out of stone near the first settlement. And there we have Bekker, surrounded by kneeling settlers, dispersing the clouds and stopping the storm from destroying the crops.' 'And that one there? What event does it portray?' 'The Finding of the Chosen. Bekker and Giambattista test the children of arriving settlers in order to find the Sources. Selected kids will be taken from their parents and brought to Mirthe, the first domicile of the wizards. You're looking at a historic moment. As you can see, all kids are scared, only that resolute brunette reaches to Giambattista with a trusting smile. This is the famous Agnes of Glanville, the first female wizard. The woman behind her is her mother. She looks quite sad, for some reason.' 'And the scene with a gathering?' 'Novigrad Union. Bekker, Giambattista and Monck make a truce with the chiefmen, priests and druids. Something to do with a pact of non-aggression and the separation of magic from the politics. Terribly corny. Let's go on. Here we have Geoffrey Monck setting off up the Pontar river, known at the time as Aevon y Pont ar Gwennelen, the Riven of Alabaster Bridges. Monck was sailing to Loc Muinne in order to convince the elven mages to school a group of children. You might be interested in the fact that among these children was a boy called Gerhart of Aelle. You've met him today. That boy is now known as Hen Gedymdeith.' 'This particular scene,' the witcher looked at the wizard, 'Lacks in drama. After all, only a few years after Monck's successful expedition, the army of Marchal Raupenneck from Tretogor carried out a massacre of Loc Muinne and Est Haemlet, killing all elves regardless of age or gender. And so began a war, which ended with the slaughter in Shaerrawedd.' 'Your admirable knowledge in history,' smiled Vilgefortz, 'ought to make you acknowledge the fact that none of the respectable wizards took part in this war. Therefore no student felt inspired to paint it. Let's continue.' " Witcher, Time of Contempt

I love how, for the most part, the games (or at least the Witcher 3) act as the perfect conclusion to the book’s story, tying up the loose ends of the Nilfgaard and the Wild Hunt, and letting Geralt retire in peace.

I don’t know, I think the Wild Hunt is kind of done a bit dirty when you compare the books to that of the game. I know why they did it and I can’t say I’m that upset with the change, but the leader of the Wild Hunt wasn’t some Darth Vader character that was evil for evil’s sake. There’s a great lore video going into the details of it worth looking up.

Good video but there were quite a few errors in it regardless if you were basing the history of the war on the books or the Netflix show. First, Menno Coehoorn was not the commander of the Nilfgaardian forces at their defeat at the second battle Sodden. Secondly there were considered 5 kingdoms of power in the North (not the 4 stated in the video) after the fall of Cintra which prior to it's fall was also considered one of the most powerful kingdoms in the North. Cintra was so powerful because the islanders of Skellige were always linked to Cintra. The people of Cintra were ancestors of people from Skellige (it is mentioned in the books that they even still have the same accents). So even without Queen Calanthe married to Eist Tuirseach the islanders still considered Cintra their parent kingdom. Crach an Craite had a special name for Calanthe showing her overrule ship of the islands even if her rule of them was not direct. The 5th kingdom of power in the North after the fall of Cintra was the Kingdom of Rivia and Lyria ruled by Queen Meve. Meve's Kingdom was the weakest of the 5 kingdoms in the North that worked together against Nilfgaard but the forces under Queen Meve were still powerful and continued to fight Nilfgaard in a guerilla campaign even after the kingdom fell to Nilfgaard in the books. It was Queen Meve who knighted Geralt after his and Cahir's actions during the "Battle for the Bridge". And then the other minor Northern kingdoms near Temeria acted like vassal/protectorate states to Temeria. Lastly, the most far northern kindgoms were break away territories from Redania which were quite powerful in their own right but did not act in the war between Nilfgaard and the Northern kingdoms as they were traditionally considered a neutral kingdom since gaining their independence from Redania . Those Kingdoms like Kovier and Pontas were very rich though and would commit large funds to the Northern Kingdoms which they used to purchase mercenary forces that would turn the tide of the final battle during the second "Northern War" as it was called.
