First Look - Bell & Ross BR05 - Royal Oak Copy?

This hot new release from Bell & Ross incites quite a bit of love and hate from the watch community. In this video we take a look at the black dial on rubber and I give you my first impressions of the watch as well as my thoughts on it's design DNA
Let me know what you think, and big thanks to my buddy Homer for letting me borrow it!

This steel version on the rubber for around $5k is a decent buy. Having an in-house movement doesn't always mean a better movement. The ability to get it serviced pretty much anywhere by any watchmaker is soooo underrated. Also they put looads of time into making that SW better and -let's face it- they probably did a really good job. The gold one for $30k is a bit harder to swallow but this one is alright. If you want to pick on something get the Chopard Alpine Eagle😂

Boris we all start our journey in this hobby somewhere, mine began 23 odd years ago (so half my life as I am now 46) and my collection has grown since then, but now we are fortunate to have some amazing opportunities with Microbrands which I have also become addicted to collecting over the past 2 years - the Selina SW200 has become the standard movement for any decent now so you can get yourself in one of many brands for $300 - $500 using this movement. Also, the NH35 movement is a workhorse & Aragon (the owner Wing) produces some great diver watches that Retail for $500+ that often go on sale for $125-$175 which are pretty hard to beat. Also keep your eye on Drop previously know as MassDrop, they have great deals on watches worth sometime 2 or 3 times the selling price, I have recently made some great purchases. I noticed today they have the Makata Sea Turtle back, I have the entire collection & the new collection on preorder if your looking for something different, I think they are asking $185. Also the Shield watches are great for $70 odd if you don’t mind Quartz. Edox is a great Swiss Watch brand that are often on Drop also, the list is endless depending on your style.

I listen to the those who decry the brand and this model and I agree with you - I don't see 'homage' to anything. I appreciate it for what it is and like it because of that!! It’s certainly reminiscent of various other design classics but I think it’s also true to B&R’s house design. So, handsome enough if this type of watch appeals to you (and it certainly appeals to me). What’s harder to come to grips with is shelling out nearly £4K here in the UK for a Sellita 300 powered piece. Yes, I know it’s modified, but it’s still recognisably an inexpensive, albeit decent workhorse movement with a few B&R bells and whistles. I’m already seeing it discounted new, so I reckon this’ll be a great buy used in a couple of years time when the price is closer to £2.5k.

I think the whole homage thing comes about more with the bracelet version and I can understand to a point, however, B&R are not the first or last to make a similar bracelet and for the price point, I think they have achieved an awesome alternative to the Royal Oak for us guys who would have to give some serious thought on spending thousands on an AP.

It’s a great 👍 watch, the only people that are paying out on it are the watch review channels that have not had the watch in hand 🖐 Bruce. You are right it’s got B&R DNA 🧬 all over it. Watch what Pete had to say from Not So Obvious Watches while everyone Elise was bagging it. My wife & daughter love it 😍 & ordered it from our AD. Bruce have you noticed of late how many of the mainstream KZread watch review channels are now doing reviews without watches in hand, as the channels grow they just pump out content based on personal views...furthermore many do unboxing’s without research as opposed to reviews now. You should be proud of your content & doing what you have always have done ✅ 🙏💯👍❌🤩

Bruce Williams my wife has the black on bracelet with a rubber strap & my daughter has gone for the silver which I personally thought 💭 was not needed in the range until you see it in person then your opinion changes. My wife & daughters wear AP or vintage Rolex, so the BR05 & some of the Tudor watches are having great appeal with the female demographic as a fashion watch BW so other watch reviewers need to get off there high horse as watch companies don’t release watches just for the watch community or us collectors; personally I think it is great that these brands are appealing to more females & engaging them into our community...and I am tired 😓 of all these reviews & brands being basically defamed when these channels haven’t even had a watch in hand, they are pumping out content as soon as it hits Instagram...it becoming pay per view. Even the microbrands have woken up & stopped sending out watches to these larger channels for review over the past 6 to 12 months. Both Random Rob & yourself are still doing it Old School, good to see people with integrity giving real reviews the way it should be done.

I bought one recently, with a blue dial and a steel bracelet. I had to take it back to the AD because there's a flaw in one link of the bracelet; a bar sticks out and it shouldn't even be in that link in the first place. The shop assistant was puzzled, didn't have an explanation, apologized and sent it back to BR. Anyway, I had the chance to wear it for a couple of weeks before this happened and I really enjoy it, especially with the blue dial which is beautiful. I do think it is kind of overpriced (4500 euros) but that's the way it is.

At first glance it looks like a Bell & Ross to me. The designers have done their job maintaining the B&R DNA there. The AP Royal Oak wasn't the first integrated bracelet watch anyway, that award goes to the 1969 Omega Constellation ref 168.045 - 368.845 . If you can pop into an Omega dealer, and get those at 30% off (got offered that for a white dial Speedmaster Racing), you can get a healthy discount on these as well. I get the feeling that because of the Rolex/Patek hype, where buying at retail is a GOOD thing, that people are forgetting that luxury watches outside of those brands are sold at a discount all the time.

Personally, I think it's because there isn't enough watches of this design in the "lower end" of the luxury watch market. There are enough dive watches that are affordable, that people won't see them as Submariner homages, unless it literally looks like a replica. For the Royal Oak? "Affordable" options as few and far between, so people just default to thinking it's a copy.

I think, if you are comparing it to the royal oak, you can see some obvious nods; the hand set, integrated style band, industrial look with modern polishing to refine it. Right now, it seems that the royal oak style is what is in demand but at more inclusive price segment - or at least that is what I have been seeing - and companies are trying to meet that demand in their own way. Personally, I like zenith's defy classic as opposed to this but I wont deny the Bell and Ross has enough of it's own DNA in it to not call it a copy.

Btw, can you review the Zenith A384 Revival watch? Even after 50 years, it looks nothing like any other chronograph until now.

This has almost the same dimensions as the Tag Monaco but the BR05 looks alot smaller! Is it because of it's thicker profile?

Looks better on the rubber strap, on bracelet it does have a Nautilus/ RO look to it..

I’ve had a look at all of the BR05 watches. Theirs definitely some Royal Oak DNA in there. Especially the hands and bracelet. But it’s clearly a Bell & Ross too. In person the face looks too small for the case for me. The fit and finish is ok but for the price it should have a chronometer movement. The rotor is supposed to look like a sports car wheel. The black model on the bracelet is the one to get if this is your thing. You should try to negotiate a discount if it is. It’s definitely over priced.

Oh, and I think this watch would have more pop with the word automatic in red or a red tipped second hand. It looks a little too plain or monochromatic with just the black and white colors going on.

I love this watch... and I don't like any other B&R... I agree with you btw, there's no discussion about this being a RO homage or copy or whatever... they are just completely different, full stop.

Agree. The Classic Fusion should have a solid caseback though. Loved that watch from Bruce's video, but the small (relative to the case size) and mediocre finished movement really turned me off in the end.

I couldn’t agree with you more!! Now is bell & Ross was known for dive watches with rotations bezels and this came out of nowhere, then yes, it would be a cheap shot at Patel and AP. But with BR history I think this is a home run!

F the haters, hate is useless... I love this watch, but it's not gonna replace my BR03-92 ceramic. also, not an homage at all, some people just are from the dumb variant. The screws have been a very specific B&R trait since the beginning

It’s not that far off off from a typical B&R design, true... but come on, you’re deluding yourself to not think they took some genta design elements. And that’s why its a 5k watch, because it looks like a royal oak/nautilus. Standard mov’t + Genta design = $$$. That’s the logic here.
