Morning James, thrilled Kamado chose you for this reveal. No better person out there in my opinion. Your enthusiasm reminded me of my toddler Christmas morning. You are the best! Thank you. Notification bell on, ready to see this perform and above all, the clean up. Should be interesting and fun to follow along.

Very interesting! I am glad that you are one of the first and few reviewers to get one thanks to all the efforts you put in your channel. The coal starting coil is cool and handy but I suspect it will be a consumable: I have been using these for over 4 decades and they do break fairly frequently and they see heat only for about 10 minutes/usage; this one will exposed to heat all the time.

Thank you James. Great video as always. I’ve been using and love the Signals + Billows controller from ThermoWorks on my Big Joe. One thing that I’ve noticed using a controller on my kamado is how much it overshoots the temperature on initial heating before it stabilizes and how well it recovers without overshooting when you open the lid during a cook. I think some testing videos on those aspects would be helpful and if you can get your hands on it a side by side comparison with other controllers like the signals would be great. Thanks for all the helpful videos throughout the years.

So happy you were able to get your hands on this. One thing that I’m curious about is will the placement of wood chunks change is you are using the automatic fire starter? It heats from the bottom so I assume the wood would catch and smolder before the charcoal and this lose out on smoke at faster than anticipated.

Love your video’s James. I love my classic 2 for all the reasons you stated, but am intrigued with this for one possible capability. Can you operate the igniter via the app? Would be great if you could load it with charcoal and set your vent doors before leaving for work etc and then fire it up before getting home and arrive to a pre heated Kamado all ready to go. This would be an amazing option!! Usually time is the only reason I don’t use it every night

I usually avoid buying new products on the day they are released. With that being said, I am really tempted to to buy one. I fought the urge to buy a pellet grill a year ago and instead ended up with my first kamado style grill, a Kamado Joe Classic III (after watching countless videos from you). I am really looking forward to your future videos putting the Connected Joe through its paces. Cheers!

Super cool! I'm still running on my KJ Classic original, but I do have an iKamand for long cooks and it works pretty well. I'm a "manual stick shift" guy as well for most cooks and enjoy the process. This looks way better than the iKamand since it's all built in and I wouldn't have to mess with a snap on accessory when I want to go automatic. As for future tests, I'm curious if you can program stages - like low and slow for chicken wings for the first stage, then kick it up for a final crisping stage.

Love it! Honestly, though, it’s basically an outdoor oven. 😊 Part of the draw of outdoor/open flame cooking is overcoming the elements and the learning curve to ultimately master the art. Will be very handy for temp management during long-slow cooks. Very nice addition to the Kamado-sphere. Will likely draw many copycats and new adopters. Still lovin’ my classic and Jr. Thanks for the peek, and the early impressions.

I love the fact that you can still manually control it. I have a pellet grill and it's really great for overnight cooking, but it is kind of noisy. It would be great to be able to combine some things because I have a small kamado (a Grill Bill) and I was looking for a bigger one and I really want a Kamado Joe. But again, for overnight cooking which I like to do with big pork butts this might be perfect, use it regularly and silently during the day, sleep at night and let it go. I'm curious to your cooks on this!

I assume you have to remove the fire starter to really get in there. Lastly, imo of course a brisket cook 😊. Oh and I assume you can start this up the old fashion way as well? Thanks again!

Hang in there with the Junior. I love mine and its 3 kin (Big Joe 3, Classic 2, and a Classic 1). The Junior has been the biggest brat when it comes to trying low and slow cooks and I've fixed things with more patience, slower ramp up time, and sticking to one brand of charcoal.

Good morning Smoking Dad, I have a few questions that I know you will cover on your first cook/review. What is the highest temp you can set and can it take it without affecting electronics? Also, is it inclement/rain proof? Thank you for keeping us up to date. Keep up the great work, cheers!

  • @wesleydrew9242
    @wesleydrew9242 Жыл бұрын

Conceptually I like the like the electronic aspect because I use the Fireboard 2 for overnight cooks when I don't want to worry about temp management or the fire going out when I sleep. But I don't use it all the time and I'd rather have it be something I can replace or upgrade down the line instead of being built in to the Joe. I do appreciate that KJ seems to be innovating more than most companies, but I think they would have been better served by releasing a new standalone controller of their own that fixes the issues the current one reportedly has. Congrats on the 100k subscribers. It's cool to see you get these opportunities because of the work you've put into this channel.

Thanks for the video - regardless of whether the final verdict is thumbs up or thumbs down, it’s great to see Kamado Joe continuing to innovate. I’m looking forward to whatever experiments you decide to run, but for now I have two questions I hope your later videos will answer. First, will lighting from the bottom mean you need to re-think how you place your smoking wood? I worry it will light first and be mostly gone before the temps settle and you can start cooking. Second, how will the electronics hold up? This is partly about Masterbuilt’s reputation, which is decidedly mixed, and partly just about the weather. It would be great if you could keep it under a simple cover, and not in the roofed portion of your yard. I don’t have that option, so it would be good to know if that means this just isn’t for me, because it needs more protection than I can give it, especially in an Ottawa winter. Thanks, and keep up the great work!

I've been looking at these, as well as the BGE. I have been using your basic Weber Kettle when smoking, and of course the issue has been consistent temp control using the Weber. I like the idea of the computer control when I'm not able to watch and check the fire all day long. Now that you've had this for a month or so, I'm interested in your opinion about this grill. I'm basically sold on this, and may order in the next week or so.

A few question for you to try and answer after reading the manual on the KJ site. It says to clear out ash so the igniter works properly for each new cook. Can you test to see if that is needed and how often would it fail to ignite if you don't clean? Does the temp probes for the controller have a max temp above which they'd burn out? And can it hold lower temps as stated 200 degrees without bad tasting smokes?

Super curious about it holding up to elements if not covered and not under a roof. I don't love trying to control my own temperature and I like to be able to turn it on way from home so it will be ready to cook when I get home. This is why I never upgraded beyond a Joe Jr and ended up getting a Recteq. Since I want to do a built in, this unit may allow me to get rid of the Jr and the Recteq and have best of both worlds. Then just a small griddle and I am set.

James, this looks very intriguing, and would be interested to see some test cooks on it to see how well it performs vs the Joe Classic and compared to some other temp-controlled option like Traeger, etc. Also I'm curious what you think about the price-point. On KJ's website, looks like it's gonna go for $1700 as opposed to $2k for a Classic Joe 3. I'm wondering what you'd be giving up other than the Slo-Roller ($250), but if it otherwise has all the capabilities of the Classic 3, including that it's supposed to accommodate all the Classic Joe accessories (according to KJ's website), it seems like a great option to have this plus a SloRoller add-on.

Thanks for sharing, have you figured out how you might pull off your double indirect method on this thing since the wire basket you used in the series 1 doesn't look like it will work on this unit?

It looks really cool, but I'm holding off. I'm still rocking the series III and loving it. I would like more space though. Eventually I think I'll talk myself into a Big Joe. Hopefully this new version will be available with the Big Joe's by then.

I want to know pricing of course :-) however, glad you are going to review the various KJ accessories. Would be great to look at Jotisserie, Slow roller AND DoughJo. Curious what the ‘high temp’ vs. ‘low and slow temp’ use is like and does it allow you to get the amount of smoke you want or the high heat you need for a sear, etc. I would imagine it can but just curious if it provides more control etc.

G'day James, I'm a fairly new subscriber to your channel. I've never owned a kamado grill before but very keen to buy one later this year and get started. I'll be very interested to hear whether you recommend the Konnected Joe as a stepping stone for beginners like me, since it has the option of both automated and manual control, or whether you think a beginner should go straight to learning fire management on a 'Classic' or 'Big' Joe. I've been leaning toward the Big Joe III up till now, but this new product has me wondering what to go for... looking forward to more of your videos on the Konnected Joe 😊

Well... I'll stick with my 4 analog KJs. My Meater probes help with managing dome temp (sure, it's an easy analog adjustment) and once you hit your temp the ceramics and vent settings lock it in. However, I admire KJ's ingenuity... Keep on keeping on. BTW, I really respect your honest reviews.

Someone with a keen eye will pick this out, but I think it's important to note that the indents in the ring that hold the ceramic "leaves" in place should be placed North-South-East-West so that the Divide and Conquer rack sits that way. You've pointed out before and I agree that the half moon grills need to be placed with the flat side North and South for best results. It starts with ring placement.

Looks great, but I'm with you on this one... Mostly analogue grilling for me. Just the longer cooks with my Fireboard 2. I also noticed the similarities with the classic 2, maybe they'll come up with a Konnected+ version or something. The Kontrol Tower Top looks just as shabby as the original one, which was replaced by KJ for the fourth time in 2 years now. The last one even had paint come off on the outside, even though it sits under a Porch all of the time. I'm seriously considering a Smokeware topvent. Just not so fond of the asthetics in comparison to the black vents.

How long did it take to get up to 400? Also I'm really hoping there's a button in the app, not just physical, that would allow you to start the fire starter. Then you can load charcoal and head to work and start it before you head home

Looks like the base is 1/4 ceramic and the rest metal(aluminum). Is the the case? Maybe that’s here the weight savings comes from. I wonder how hot the metal outside gets. Thanks for the review.

Back in the day I used an electric fire starter for old-fashioned charcoal. The first thing I thought of when I saw the "AFS" was how long before it burns out? More to the point, when it inevitability does burn out, how easy is it to replace and how easy will it be to find?

James - I'm looking forward to a video on how it controls the temp inside. Doesn't seem to have a fan/baffle type of mechanism like some of the other 3rd party kamado products have that is used to control the temp within. Does it just instruct you to open and close the vents manually (since there isn't anything to automatically slide the vents open or closed)? I'd suspect it might alert you on the phone app to come and adjust the vents accordingly.

How easy will it be to replace that electric element/starter at the bottom of the grill? That's going to be a wear item. I used to have an electric starter like that and it eventually stopped working. Otherwise, I like this but I'll stick with the KJ I have. The handles on the sides are a nice touch. Should help reduce the number of "bounce tests" that are performed on KJs.
