First Look | 2023 MacBook Pro for Adobe CC

Apple's NEW 16" M2 Max MacBook Pro makes using the Adobe CC suite a joy. The early M1 chips from 2020 were a great start, but these machines are incredibly powerful. It's a great time to be a photographer, videographer, or creator!

UPDATES SINCE UPLOAD 👇👇👇 1. My 4TB drive died during this vid 😭 It was very new, WD is helping replace under warranty. I'm not swearing off SanDisk yet. This was my only drive failure in my life so far, and the 1TB has been great. Just a reminder - I typically only back up my finished files, but sometimes not-yet-backed-up working files disappear. And for big projects like this, it'll suck. Work accordingly! 2. At least half of this video was filmed before I edited this project on the new machine. I also completed a small freelance photo job during this time period, half and half in LR/PS. Minus the drive failure on the video side, both were so much fun. I didn't realize how much delay my Air had at times. 3. ProMotion - I've gotten used to this on my iPhone. For general computing this is lovely. For PS/LR/PR, I don't really care about this too much. 4. Trackpad - It's massive. I haven't plugged in a mouse yet, and I edited the photo project and video with only the trackpad and I'm liking that a lot. 5. Display - I also skipped any external display for these projects to really test. I will definitely use one from time to time if I'm at my desk, especially for the PR tool windows, but the 16" screen is highly usable as a standalone. No regrets on this choice whatsoever yet (but again, full opinion won't be formed until I've started lugging this around). 6. I/O - SD card reader! Also I can see the full benefits now of using an iPhone as a b-cam as opposed to the Canon RP. Less lens choice but it is easier to mount, longer battery, airdrop right to MacBook. I'm pretty excited about this combo for 2023. Continuity camera is cool. 7. Testing - I kept everything equal in the tests that I could, OBS was running for many. That's not typical for me to run this all the time, but as a video creator, it's not atypical. Better to focus on the comparison of machines as opposed to the exact times. The M2 fans barely kicked on. Or, if they were on full blast, they were VERY quiet. The Air definitely got warmer w/o active cooling. 8. Speakers - They bump. 9. Recommendation - My spec seems overkill for me (a bit "future-proof" was my intent) and I'm sure photo-first/only creators can get by with less. I used the base 2020 M1 Air for two years and lived to tell about it 😅 Happy to try to answer any and all questions I personally can, but want to reiterate that my use case involves consolidating a fairly performant windows machine and the M1 Air. And from a price standpoint, also directly use this for business in the occasional freelance work I do on the side.

Thanks for this video! Really informative. I just upgraded this week. I went from my M1 MacBook Air to the 2021 M1 Macbook Pro. Really impressed by how the 14 inch model handled Lightroom, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, and everything else I threw at it while going through my workflow. In regards to SSDs, I use Samsung T5s and T7s. They’ve been dependable so far, and work well backing up my M1 Mac Mini and Macbook Pro, which both have 512gb of SSD storage.

Thanks for the original comment! And glad you're also having a great experience so far too, it's weird having pics load so quick when scrolling in Lightroom 😆 I'll definitely look into those drives if I keep having issues. Hoping this is a one-and-done failure for the foreseeable future

Lol, thanks! I'm still relatively new to this and it's hard to keep longer videos nice and dense.

@@DanYosua Goodluck with the channel, I like the relaxed delivery rather than "Bang" in your face stuff. Its way more authentic.

Thanks, that’s super helpful feedback! I think I have room to get more excitable to match my in-person self, but generally am attempting to avoid some of the forceful, attention-grabbing audience retention techniques that are common now.

Is there gonna be a noticeable difference with 30 and 38 core GPU? Mainly video and photo editing.

Tough for me to say definitively without using both, but I'm regularly editing these vids with layered 4k timelines and it's crushing them. Maybe if you're already deep into 8k stuff you might notice a difference today? Otherwise, I think it's more of a "future proofing" choice to bump to 38 for most people right now. Given how well my baseline Air spec held up over two years, I just decided to make the bet that 30 would be plenty solid for me for the next 3-5 years 🤞

I’ve only used pc before (except iPad pro12.9 and 8th gen which I film on for KZread) My laptop is dying and I’m thinking of switching to a MacBook Pro. I use photoshop not the suite just photoshop foe making digital paper. I’m new to it. They can have 5-35 layers. I use photoshop elements for video editing because I had it before photoshop and it’s free and easy to use. I’m not sure I will be able to use it with a Mac without having to purchase it again Can you suggest an easy editing program/app that is free and I was looking at the MacBook Air 15 m2 with 16gb memory and 512gb storage. Would this work or do I have to go with the MacBook Pro 14” with 18gb memory 1tb storage? This is all new to me and I don’t have anyone to ask. Could you please help me.

I'm not too up to date on solid, free equivalent photo software. If you like PS and LR, you can get the photo only plan for $20/mo. On the video front, most people tend to recommend Davinci's free version. I've tried it briefly, and likely will again, but am still using Premiere. As far as the Pros vs. Airs, I'd get enough storage to easily keep all your programs, and I like to have more headroom to be able to work on a big local project if I need to. The new Airs with 16gbs of RAM probably do really well assuming your psd files aren't really massive. As an example, I opened ~20 32mp raw photos from LR in PS as layers this weekend, and even this pro was slowing down on that (it turned into a 3gb .psb file). I rarely ever do stuff like that, but if that's regular for you and the pc was barely handling it, I'd probably look toward the pro lines.

I cant download photoshop express on my m2 14 mbp wtf? Is there any reason this is the case?

I haven't used it before, but I believe Express is only for mobile devices. You'll likely need the actual Adobe CC desktop apps. I *think* there's also a browser-based PS now, but not positive about how that works or if there is a cost associated.
