Update: I reached out to Marin and they told me the chainstay window is to save weight. On a lot of bikes, (including this one) the chainstay yoke is a solid piece of steel, so removing some extra material here saves weight.

That bike has caught my eye a few times. Pretty cool unit for the money. I especially like all the frame mounts. And that head tube angle is plenty for an adventure bike!

I've ordered this. Can’t wait to see how it does on the trail!

I was riding a bike with a quick-release on time and the wheel fell off on a black trail, the 12mm does make a huge difference. The Marin looks so nice

Just bought this bike, should hopefully arrive at the end of this week🤞🏼. Haven’t ridden mountain bikes in a long time, but super keen to get back into the saddle, plus it’ll be good to get out on 2 wheels when none of my mates are available for a Motorbike ride 👌🏼

Great looking bike, the tan walls suit it (I'm generally not a fan of them). I'm loving all of the integrated mounting points, loads of options for different bikepacking set-ups.

Good discussion on the thru-axle vs qr. I have a Mason 1 with qr, I think the qr is the only thing wrong with the bike but I did get a killer deal on it. And I think your right, the qr does make the rear end feel more compliant on bumps...

Man brings back memories of my Pine Mountain with sweet Columbus Cyber tubing from back in the day. The only thing I didn't like is the under the bottom bracket cabling.

Bro I own the Marin pine mountain 2017 rigid frame. I am in love with this bike. I run 3" tires. Absolutely great feeling great riding bike. This new 2020 must be amazing. More range better components and front fork. Must be a great bike overall

Just bought a 2021 Pine Mountain 1. Nice review. Didn’t think I needed all the extra specs on the Pine Mountain 2. Can upgrade as needed. Only wish it had PM 1 had thru rear axle. Can’t wait to pick it up today and start riding!

Interesting bike & timing. I’ve been thinking of repurposing my old Chromag Rootdown as an adventure bike. 67deg HA, 73deg SA, 140mm travel... This bike is telling me it would work.

​@@hardtailparty I'm slightly confused by the praise for the 66 degree HT angle on the Marin -- is this just because you're interested in hybrid bikepacking/trail-shredding use? Might someone looking for a "pure" bikepacking bike actually prefer a steeper HT angle? With front loads such as the handlebar roll you mentioned (but possibly more so with fork blade/3-pack cages on a different fork) I'd think you might get more wheel flop with the slacker angle. Enjoyed seeing this bike in the recent obstacle course video, where the short chainstays seemed to be an asset.

San quentin next please. I realy like your reviews.

Gotta love unboxing new bikes all the time! Lucky guy! I know the previous gen PM came with 27.5+ I'm curious if this new frame has room in the rear to set it up the same?

My Trail bike has the RS 35 Gold fork. It is decent once dialed in. Out of the box with the pressure set for my weight and no spacers it was too bouncy, I took out 15psi and added two spacers and it made a massive difference, it now flies through chunk, and still doesn't have bottom out issues and I'm a bigger rider.

I could bei wrong but many of the cheaper brake rotors are actually just lasered out of the base material... In Shimano, machining the surface starts at the SLX equivalent brake rotors afaik... I really like the bar... Could be a nice aftermarket thing as well... I mostly ride 40mm rise Renthal Fatbars and sometimes wish there was a 50mm version...

Same issue here but the 135q9 for example buy the Shimano XT. It will fix that issue. I’m a 225lb hard peddler and the wheel is centered now and does not dive into the lower left chainstay.

I was looking at the Marin Nail Trail, which seems to be in between the san quentin and this, maybe this is worth a look, dont see many reviews etc for the nail trail.

Did you find anything out about the rotors? I recently got a San Quentin 3 and by the sounds of it they have those same rotors. I'd be interested to know what you find out.

One question I can't get answered, if I bought this bike, would I be able to do the smallest of small jumps without being worried of breaking anything? Such as jumping on and off curbs and the highest being maybe a foot of clearance from the ground.

any modern bike will be able to handle that unless you weigh 300+ lbs.

the only qr that i have seen that wont slip are closed cam. i dont know why they changed the design on those

Wow. I just looked at the geometry specs, and that is one upright bike. You'll be sitting-up in the saddle like it's a dressage competition.

@@hardtailparty I'm looking forward to the review. I found my SIR 9 to be too upright before I flipped the stem over and that was at least an inch lower than that riser bar. Gotta give them credit for knowing what they want.

Will you ever review any Giant bikes? I'm finally getting my first real mtb other than cheap big box store mtb. My first choice is a fathom 1 and second is a talon. I cant decide 27.5 or 29er either. I love your channel. Keep the hardtail party going.

Depends on your height & stature just like frame sizing. If your 5'10" & taller with long inseam definitely 29er Lg. Also depends where & how you ride. Ground clearance not as important on gravel, trail backpacking like it is on mtb or downhill.

I haven't run a tan wall tire since... many decades ago. They used to dry rot way faster than the tread wore, which irritated me very much! I am sure the rubber composition is more durable these days.

Hi I was looking at the San Quentin which also has the cables routed underneath the BB and chainstay but am concerned about snagging cables underneath and the angle of the cable to get to the derailleur. Do you think the cable routing is ok for trail riding and the tight angle into derailleur works ok?

Its not ideal, but it's ok.

You know what I'm thinking that cut out is on the chainstay it very well might be so when your chain drops or for the chainring being so close to the chainstay under Flex it might gouge it up I'm very curious to find out what that is myself or can be just for the flex like you're saying I just know on my bike I dropped the chain because I didn't engage the clutch after cleaning it chain dropped gouged up that section A little bit

I know this video is quite a few years already, but can someone say what the chainring clearance is on the Pien Mountain? Can't find any info regarding that. Would love to run a 36 tooth chainring.

Would this bike with a steeper head angle be appropriate for more hardcore trails/enduro riding? For instance if it had a cane creek headset with the 2 degree angle cup?

Usually a slacker head angle makes a bike more appropriate for hardcore trails. A 66* head angle is great for a bike like this. It's not designed for hardcore trails, but I think it'd do ok on most.

Hi! Great video. I'm curious about the size you're riding (and you're height if possible). My LBS dosen't have them in stock and I'm trying to get an idea of the size to get seeing as the geo is more adventure tuned. I'm usually between a M and a L. Thanks!

I'm 5'6" and this is a med. The seat is too tall for me with a 150mm dropper. You can't fully insert the dropper because it hits the water bottle boss on the seat tube. So I'm a little too short for it. But I like the reach. I base my bike sizes off of their reach measurement.

Could you do a video on mountainbikes for tall or really tall people im around 6.4/6.5 and i recently bought a nukeproof scout 2020 XL but it still feels small, is it me or are there any bike companies with bigger frames

Nukeproofs are extremely small. I'm normally s medium, and on the Nukeproof I'd be an XL. I'm 5'6" tall

Now that we're reviewing a bike packer style, how's the RSD Sergeant stack up?, I really like that frame...

I ended up returning the sergeant to RSD. It was a loaner bike for review. Solid bike with long chainstays and lots of versatility.

I think the rotors on that are the shimano for resin pads only, I have them on my bike, and they are not machined either, rotor even says resin pads only, just a heads up, they are difficult to bed in, takes a while

I looked all over for those markings, but it doesn't say for resin pads only. I've seen the resin pad only rotors before and they appear similar. I'll have to do more research.

I don't know what the MT520s are but the MT420s on my Hawk Hill 3 are resin only. And for some reason the brake pads are like $30 a set. Hopefully an aftermarket company will release some cheaper ones.
