I first time hearing this song, it was so good I’m going to listen again. I just recently started listening to Marillion. Why they never crossed my radar sooner is a mystery to me. So now I have 19 albums to listen to, I’m still digesting their first four and they are excellent, very engaging and interesting. Great vocals and lyrics with emotional depth. I recommend playing their song White Russian, it’s from their Clutching at Straws album, my favorite by a very small margin of the Fish period. Whole album is incredible. Thank you for reacting to Marillion, a band that more people should get to hear.

Thnx for your Marillion reaction... my favourite symphonic band by far. And - Brave - the best album ever! The Marillion history divided between in a Fish-era and a Steve Hogarth-era. Personally I talk about Fish-fans and Marillion-fans. In my opinion Marillion grew in the perfect unique sound after Hogarth joined the band.

Marillion is one of my favorite bands ever. They put an awesome live show. The singer (“H”) is pure emotion. They have plenty of long pieces, with masterful and classy musicianship. Try from them “Neverland”, “The Leavers”, “Sounds that Can’t be Made”, “The Invisible Man”, “Power”.

In a nutshell, the story portrayed in the Brave concept album is of a cute young girl sexually molested by her father, who runs away from that horror, gets caught and returned, is diagnosed as mentally ill, assumably because of her stories of molestation by her "respectable" family man dad, escapes from there to run to the big city, where while living in the street she falls into a wrong crowd of callow youths, finds love despite all this misfortune, but it doesn't work out, and she then commits suicide by jumping off a high suspension bridge. This song is her lyrical suicide note, sung in the first person. Imagine the consternation of the record executives hearing a song on a soon to be released album depicting a teenage suicide. Marillion had to go back in the studio and create an additional song, "Made Again", which finishes the story by having the girl not commit suicide and climb out of the depths of her acute depression to see life as fresh and beautiful. In an epic compromise, the vinyl edition of the album had a unique two-groove construct where if the needle tracked into one groove at the ending of The Great Escape, you got "Made Again". If it tracked into the other groove, you got a dozen of so minutes of the sound of water lapping on a shoreline. Your patron, bless him, should have told you that any live video of Marillion in the Hogarth era is about 10x as good as any studio version. Hogarth seems to be tapped with some sort of magical passion stick when onstage before a live audience, and he is transformed into the best male singer in all of pop music. You missed out by not seeing the live performance of this song. Here, let me fix that omission: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ooVrlqWwiMbSmbA.html

This is one of the best songs ever IMHO, so I'm delighted that you reacted to it. The concept of the Brave album was inspired by singer Steve Hogarth seeing a real media report about the police finding a teenage girl upset and confused on Severn Bridge (she didn't jump in reality). He wanted to sympathetically explore ideas that might have driven a young girl to end up in that desperate situation. The Great Escape was the final track on the album (notwithstanding the aforementioned Made Again) and summarised everything that had gone before on the album as well as providing the original tragic finale, which was then changed by Made Again. A short film was made to accompany the album; parts of it are on KZread, but not the whole thing at the time of writing. I would definitely urge you to do more Marillion reactions - there are plenty of songs to choose from!

This is a new one to me too. Some lyrics that struck me: "Icarus would know A mountain isn't far to fall When you've fallen When you've fallen from the moon" It's beautiful but sad and disturbing. I'm going to explore more of this band: "Marillion formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England in 1979... had albums until 1998" The Girl on Severen Bridge Hogarth heard about her on a radio broadcast: how police had picked up a teenage who was wandering, lost and confused, on the between England and Wales. The has been a suicide hotspot since it was opened in 1966, a magnet for troubled souls like the nameless .Feb 7, 2020

By happy coincidence, yesterday evening as the main act for what Marillion had named the "Couch Convention 2020", the band streamed a 2013 20th Anniversary concert featuring the performance of Brave in its entirety. That stream has been turned into a KZread video, which you can find here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iZx5w6Zrhs_Skrw.html. I tried to link to the beginning of Marillion's performance. Unlike other long-time fans who've been with Marillion since the Fish era, I discovered Marillion when Pandora fed me some of their tunes after figuring out I loved prog. That was in January of 2013. I showed several KZread videos to my wife, and in early March we found our way to Montreal to see the Montreal version of this show, plus two other different full Marillion concerts, as part of the Montreal edition of that year's "Marillion Weekends". Went back there again in 2019. The ovation which followed the last note of "The Great Escape" was the loudest noise I've ever heard, and it lasted for at least 10 minutes, if not longer. The Couch Convention came about when Marillion felt they had to cancel the weekends set for 2021 due to Covid uncertainties. The other two concerts were "Marbles in the Park" and "All One Tonight", ther Royal Albert Hall show from 2017. These are probably the three best live performances by the band. There were several commentors who said they were new to Marillion. If so, you need to check out all three shows. I don't know how long the band will leave them up.

For me personally the thing is, Marillion has become one of the leading voices in our metamodern era. If someone’s looking for a pure emotion and complete honesty, this band has a lot to offer. That’s true, they were pioneering the crowdfunding thing which made them able to do what they want to do without any pressure from a record label or whatever as well as it established a much closer connection between the guys and the fan base, and all that make them quite a family. At some point I started to think that maybe “emotional rock” as a definition would be approached in a proper way to describe their music as I never felt that “neo-progressive rock” term. And all of a sudden I found there are some musical journalists who put that emotional rock term too when writing about Marillion. I am personally going with Steve Hogarth’s era not only because it fits my musical taste far better than Fish’s stuff (although I love those albums, the last two with Fish are just masterpieces in their entirety), but also because Hogarth did a big change with the band in their DNA, having produced absolutely unique pieces of music. He’s a very artistic person and as you’ve noticed he adds much emotion to his studio singing, but at the live stage he’s going dramatically crazy as an actor (which I do love as well). For an ordinary man their music might sound boring, long, whatever. But when you pay attention, it grows on you very quickly. It is hard to recommend you something because there are lots of brilliant things to discover from their catalog. Talking about Fish, I’d pick “Blind Curve” or “Hotel Hobbies”. But what about Hogarth, I would say you could check “The Space”, particularly live version from Royal Albert Hall (there’s an official video here on KZread) - but I’m not sure have you ever reacted to live stuff. And later you can go with “Easter”, “Splintering Heart”, “The Invisible Man”, “Neverland”, “Ocean Cloud”, “Power”, “The Leavers” to name a few. There you go. In my opinion, Marillion is one of those bands who teach you how to actually listen to music, with respect and paying attention to details. It makes you patient and mellowed if you want in a lot of ways, so after embracing Marillion you become able to listen to nearly everything in this world. That’s what both Marillion and David Sylvian did to me number of years ago. Since then almost nothing surprises me, in a good sense.

Marillion is an amazing prog rock band! This track is from concept album Brave, I really recommend checking it as a whole, either for a reaction or just for your personal enjoyment. Most of their stuff is actually self-contained story songs, one of my favourites is Neverland (clearly inspired by Peter Pan) and The Invisible Man (a multisection, thirteen-minute long track). They are masters of emotional prog and incorporate some alternative rock influences into their sound. Great reaction as always!

Great Reaction. "The Great Escape" is from the 1994 Album Brave that was based on a true story that Steve Hogarth heard on the radio about a girl that was found walking on the Severn road bridge which is a motorway bridge that goes between England and Wales. police stopped her as They thought she might of jumped off the bridge. The album covers different events that could of got her into that state of mind.

I tried to get into post Fish Marillion. It just never clicked for me. Kind of like post Waters Floyd, there was an element of authentic misanthropy and cynicism which simply vanished when the original singers departed. For me, that was a loss. Not saying Hogarth couldn’t be dark, but Fish’s blade cut deeper. Can you imagine Hogarth composing anything like She Chameleon?

Anyone who appreciates real emotion in music will fine much to love in both Marillion eras - I'm more in the Steve Hogarth (or just 'h' as we call him these days) camp (this is from his 3rd album with the band, a dark concept album that followed the poppiest album they ever did - it's fair to say this confused people at the time, though it still scraped the UK top 10 on release), but both eras are magnificent and he and Fish both have very distinctive lyrical styles to dive into - and then there's the music, led by Steve Rothery's incredible Gilmour-esque guitar - Rothers has often cited this as one of his favourite Marillion tracks and I can't disagree with him, but there's plenty more where that came from. Also worth pointing out that h joined, as you mentioned, in early 1989 and that remains the most recent line-up change the band has had, which I find simply staggering!

So you have discovered Marillion one of my top 3 or 4 bands all time. The Great Escape is part of the Brave album which is an entire concept piece about the girl on the bridge and why she might be at that point in her life. The inspired character is a runaway and her story is one of abuse with a strong hint at sexual abuse. This an amazing emotional roller coaster ride at times hauntingly sad and yet inspiring as well. If you like the song at all , listen to the whole thing. Won't regret it. A whole catalog of brilliant Marillion music awaits you. New to your channel and enjoyed the thought you put into the lyrics. I see a few people have made recommendations for other Marillion songs, and I'd like to add a couple that a lot overlook. Marillion - Incubus. An old song where 'candid' photos were the worst things a girl might worry about when badly jilting a BF, but in this day and age of revenge p*rn and silly girls thinking OnlyFans is 'empowering', there are important lessons in the song... but damn, it's a long one. Marillion - Forgotten Sons. Another old song, with the original singer. A very interesting take on the 'troubles' in Ireland, and the fate of young men being drawn into other peoples' wars.

Some say Fish era Marillion continued what Genesis was when Peter Gabriel left. That makes absolutely no sense at all, but its fun way to put Marillion in context. Neoprog, most prog bands changed to something poppier, but Marillion did proper prog. Much what Marillion published has a very personal meaning to me.

Mate, given your previous reactions, I have zero doubt that it will be Marillions early albums under Fish that will challenge your imagination and capture your musical taste buds. Nothing wrong with the 'secondary' era and current line up at all, but it will be Fish's poetical lyrics that wet your appetite for this band far more. Any song will do from their first four albums, although Fugazi is my personal favourite album (maybe try 'Incubus' or 'Jigsaw') as taster tracks) but the track 'Sugar Mice' from their fourth album "Clutching at Straws' is a personal favourite track (deals with Fish's alcholism), talk about raw emotion thats your song right there,...had Marillion been born in the 70's they would have been a far bgger name than they are, the 80's was simply the wrong musical environment for them hence the then music media's disdain for them....very very under rated band, you'll enjoy their work, trust me.

This is a concept album, the whole album is one story about a girl. My favorite album "Brave".

There are NO OTHER BANDS like Marillion. You have struck gold. Incidentally - take a listen to the song The Gold on the album F.E.A.R.!

Never liked them, but one of the great things is Daniel gives us the occasion to try stuff again. In my memory, the Gabriel-era Genesis was too much of an influence. Here, in the early part, i was reminded of Pink Floyd's Time. The piano/flute transition is pure Genesis. I don't think you've tried Supper's Ready or The Musical Box yet ?

For heaven's sake, if you're going to do Marillion, a very good band, get thee to Genesis, without whom there'd be no Marillion. Start with Firth of Fifth (their most accessible and one of their nest), Cinema Show, the live version of The Musical Box, and then their 23 minute Supper's Ready.

The climax of Marillion's most progressive and profoundly emotional album. The band's first three albums were prog by numbers, some good stuff, exciting at the time, but nothing too original. On the fourth album they wrote some of their best songs, but the band fell apart. On the fifth album they found a more accomplished singer and musical collaborator, more interested in the band than the space between his ears and his own mythology, They've spent the next thirty years rebuilding their career in the face of much scorn from skeptical media and from fans of the first singer who never got over the schism.
