That high register string section is mimicking the sound of wires resonating from the wind. I didn’t think the lineman was listening to a phone line, I thought he was hearing the wires whine and was hearing voices in that sound. A great song. Deceptively simple but it has “pull”.

It's a great song, though to this day I think the strings are over-done in places. I'm pretty sure he's not listening in on someone's conversation - I mean, that doesn't really make a lot of sense if you think it through. It's simpler than that. He misses his lover. He "hears her voice wherever he goes" - not literally but metaphorically. And he's not going to see her anytime soon, because he's got a job that keeps him on the road - he's "still on the line."

As others have stated, Glen Campbell was a highly respected studio musician with The Wrecking Crew prior to launching his solo career (same thing with Leon Russell). In an interview done shortly after Campbell's death, Alice Cooper (his close friend) said that he (Cooper) was always bombarded by requests from musicians of all stripes to set them up for a guitar lesson from Campbell - that's how highly regarded he was.

The lineman is working on power lines which whine with their high-voltage. I think this song is really about being away from his loved one, and he hears her singing on the wire. The sounds on the electricity transmission wire are not random, but a reflection of their environment - so they have an organic, living quality. We perceive this and "hear" through our mind's longing to associate/assign the sounds with/to our memories. In this case he hears her singing. This happens to me now and then when I hear things in the rushing of the wind, or in fuctuations of ventilation. The same can be said for other sounds of nature, such as surf/ocean. This song refers to one profession, but could easily apply to any that requires a separation of people. Recently, 'Girl Named Tom' did an excellent cover of this on their album; and they performed it on The Voice.

Jimmy Webb didn't consider himself a Country writer, and Glenn Up until that point was a session musician, playing whatever they put in front of him. But they created one of the true Country Classics, despite the over-produced arrangement. So many tried to copy its multi-layered approach that it eventually led to the Outlaw movement of Waylon and Willie and others who brought the Country back to Country music. One of my favorite songs, any genre.

I love your channel and I am old enough to be your grandmother. Your purity and innocence are refreshing. The fact that you put in the time to understand and explain the songs is a good touch. You are so intelligent and mannered you must be home schooled. Having your Dad on with you sometimes is really nice. His love for you is so obvious. Please treat him like the treasure he is while you have him and be grateful for the man he is. Galveston is a good song to consider. Get the 1968 one he did live on a tv show before the cocaine robbed him of his voice and he succumbed to the worst part of fame. I was 10 years old in 1968 when this song came out. My best friend was Mary Ann and her brother, Steve, was the big man on campus. High school football hero with blonde Beach Boys haircut with the long bangs. He got his draft notice just after Christmas of that year. His father loved him like yours loves you and bought him a yellow Dodge Super Bee with a Hemi and the Super Bee stripe around the back with the bumblebee picture the next week. Being young girls we thought the bee was the best part of the car. He drove it like a man possessed with his girlfriend so close he looked like he had 2 heads. No seatbelt laws back then. Steve drove us to the bus for summer camp in that car and took a picture of us leaning against the front bumper before we left. He went to boot camp that summer and when he came home before shipping out he was in uniform with a shaved head and I thought he looked every inch the hero already. Then he went to serve his country as a helicopter door gunner. The average lifespan for a door gunner was between 7 seconds after the first shot is fired and 2 weeks. He made it almost 2 months and was killed on his 19th birthday. It was common for we younger kids to have friends who lost older brothers or cousins in VietNam. It happened a few times during each school year. The schools closed for Steve's funeral. His pallbearers were his team mates who wore their football jackets with black dress pants and white shirts instead of suits. They were crying openly and brokenly like the children in grown bodies that they were. He left his jacket with his girlfriend to care for until he 'got back'. She was wearing it and grieving like only an 18 year old girl who has seen every dream she had for the future just gone forever. His father drove his Super Bee to the funeral and parked it behind the casket where it was a central point. He was never the same. As a WWII veteran he knew what war meant and what his son had been through. He washed that car every week and drove it through town then parked it back where Steve had parked it until the next week. He was always alone. Galveston was not allowed to be played in his presence EVER. If it came on the radio we all knew to turn off the radio immediately. When Steve's things came back from VietNam the picture of me and Mary Ann leaning on that bumper was in his wallet. It hung on the wall in her room and went to college with her then into her home when she married. Mary Ann and I grew up of course and hit all the milestones-hs graduation, college, marriage, kids and finally grandkids. Her father died in 1998 and left Mary Ann the Super Bee. She came and got me and we rode around crying and remembering Steve and our innocence that was no longer there. She has kept the tradition of treating that car like gold and now we wash it every week. And we cry every time. Sometimes we take it out on the back roads and let the Hemi roar. Sometimes it feels like it is actually lifting off the road. A copy of the photo is laminated and hangs from the mirror. Steve is frozen in time at 18. Life is short and sometimes really cruel. She plans to leave the car to her oldest son, Steve, who has been raised to revere that hunk of metal. It has not turned over 50,000 miles yet. Love the people you have while you have them. Keep your optimism. I pray yours is a life with as much happiness as possible in it. I lost my dad in 1989 and I miss him every day. Go now and hug your folks like it is the last time you will get a chance to. God bless and keep you.

I have listened to a gob of music over the last 40 yrs or so. All types. From opera to death metal. This is my favorite song of all time. So well crafted. Such a great messege and so many layers of emotions. I take the song a bit different and simpler: The man that goes and works for his family and misses them. The everyday man. Beautifully arranged. Such an unusual song that Jim Webb wrote and the great voice of Glen Campbell. The perfect vibrato guitar solo. The strings. The effects of the whine in the telephone line. Paints such an amazing picture. And it has the all time best line in a love song "And I need more than want you, and I want you for all time" What a melter. Best song ever written. However one wants to interpret the song the sentiment is there and yes one of the most unusual haunting songs ever.

Your desire to know the meaning of the lyrics and appreciation of the orchestra providing the backdrop (or atmospherics) for the song was perfect for those not familiar with it - I love your level of inquisition that you apply to all of your reviews, and particularly to this classic of the late 60’s by one of the most talented songwriters of the 20th century - your ability to quickly determine how complex this song is at first blush was very impressive, and you are to be applauded for your efforts - keep up the good work!

His "Git Me To Phoenix" is also a knee-slapper. Well, thigh-slapper, or grazer. As a rising star it might serve you well to study the songs of Jimmy Webb, as well as those of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Joan Armatrading, etc. You can write about how and why ordinary people are extraordinary. By putting power into the hands of individuals, KZread has given you the Butterfly Effect. With a few clicks of the finger, you can influence the world. These are indeed the days of miracle and wonder.

It was an incredibly popular song in 1968, and writer Jimmy Webb was a critics darling as well. It was covered by everyone so I'm sure it made it on the Muppet show, probably in a guest appearance by Glen Campbell himself.

I not only love Glen's body of work, but his life story is compelling. The 8th of 12 children, born to poor share cropper parents in Delight, Arkansas. Glen couldn't read music, but stands as one of the greatest guitarists of all time (along w/ Roy Clark). Miss you, Glenn. ☘💚🌱

Daniel, first a note to say how much I enjoy seeing your reactions. Intelligence and a lack of gimmicks is a refreshing approach. I'm old enough to have heard "Wichita Lineman" when it was new. I was 12 then, 66 now, and I've never gotten tired of it---that despite the fact that from age 15 to 25, I was a radio disc jockey and played it maybe 100 times as an oldie. My standard description of "Wichita Lineman" is---a perfect recording of a perfect performance of a perfect song.

Glen left home as a young teen to tour with a band. His virtuoso guitar skill was self taught, playing all his own lead arrangements with no training in theory. He was also the first replacement for Brian Wilson, touring with the Beach Boys prior to working with Jimmy Webb and making it big on his own.

my dad was an electrical lineman, not telephone. They worked in every kind of ugly weather. Dedicated to community, dangerous job, loved their families, had very long hours in storms. Linemen keep the power on. I Don't see telephone linemen but the electrical linemen do both Arial line and underground cable. No they Don't listen to phone calls because they're handling 75,000+ volts of electricity.

You really should do a live Patreon watch and review of the documentary "The Wrecking Crew", which Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, among others were a part of before they became famous on their own. They were a group of studio musicians in the Los Angeles area who recorded some of the best known pop/rock songs, commercial jingles, movie soundtracks and TV Show Theme songs. Campbell is featured heavily on there and you'd be surprised at how many of the bands of the era used studio musicians to record their albums while they were busy touring. The Beach Boys and the Monkees are two examples.

😎👍 If it's of interest, Jimmy Webb also composed a brilliant trilogy of singles for The 5th Dimension, "Up Up And Away," "Paper Cup" and "Carpet Man." All are extremely musically complex and worth checking out. As for this song appearing on an episode of The Muppet Show, that certainly wouldn't surprise me. Many 60s hits were performed on that 70s program.
